About Us Friday, 01 July 2005 Our Mission
To improve the quality of life of all individuals with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and their families through awareness, education and research.
The Daisy The daisy represents both the challenges of spina Bifida...The heart of the flower represents the brain, which in the case of persons living with Spina Bifida, is often affected by hydrocephalus.
The daisy's petals are cloven, thereby representing the various lesions caused by Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus. The daisy's leaf and stem are irregular, and depict the unusual form of the spinal cord and backbone of a person suffering from Spina Bifida... but the beauty of a flower is equally meant to reflect the beauty of people with Spina Bifida who, in spite of their challenges, live happy and productive lives... Welcome to our Journey with Spina Bifida. This website documents our continuing journey with Spina Bifida. It is my goal for this page to educate those parents who have discovered that their unborn child is affected with Spina Bifida and are desperately seeking information and for those parents who already have a child affected with Spina Bifida. I hope this page will ease some of the concerns you may have and provide hope for your child and yourselves as parents. We Begin...……. I n 1991 I discovered that I was pregnant with my first child. Although it came as a shock as my husband and I were not planning on starting a family at that time, it was wonderful news to me! Me, a "MOM"! My pregnancy was going very well and I looked forward to being a "first time" mom. I went into labor on the morning of May 31 st , 1992. My labor was minimal and after nearly 20 hours I went to the hospital. (Boy, wouldn’t it be great if labor was "always" that easy!) Dr. Sutherland was paged and I was prepped for a c-section as to avoid any unnecessary trauma to my son during birth.

69. Spina Bifida, The Institute For Neurology And Neurosurgery, New York
Myelomeningocele, commonly referred to as spina bifida, is a congenital condition where the spinal cord is exposed to the outside environment at birth.
http://nyneurosurgery.org/spinabifida_intro.htm
The degree of neurological deficit is directly relates to the level of the spinal cord defect and its extent. If only the bottom of the spinal cord is involved (conus), there may be only bowel and bladder dysfunction, while the most extensive lesions can result in total paralysis of the legs with accompanying bowel and bladder dysfunction. It is because of the varying neurological manifestations of meningomyelocele that there has been so much controversy regarding appropriate treatment.

yes no Spina bifida is a neural tube defect and is a developmental anomaly which occurs very early in pregnancy. The neural tube develops to form the spinal cord, brain and spine. When Spina Bifida occurs, the tube is split and one or more vertebrae (small bones of the back) fail to form properly, thus leaving a gap. There are three main types of spina bifida. Spina bifida occulta where the only sign of the malformation is a dimple or hair at the site of the defect on the skin of the back. This condition is very mild and is usually symptomless although occasionally there may be continence problems and difficulties with mobility. In Spina bifida cystica a sac or cyst is visible on the back covered by a thin layer of skin. There are two forms: a meningocele and a myelomeningocele. In a meningocele the sac contains tissues which cover the spinal cord and cerebro-spinal fluid. The nerves are not normally badly damaged and there is little or no malfunction. This is the least common form of spina bifida. Myelomeningocele is the most common and severest form and is characterised by the inclusion in the sac of nerves and part of the spinal cord as well as tissue and cerebral-spinal fluid. Some degree of paralysis and loss of sensation occur below the site of the defect. The extent of the disability is dependent upon the extent of nerve damage.

New day, new hope for children with spina bifida

    Common problems in spina bifida
    ... A chance for a better life
    Introduction
Each year in this country, 4,000 children, or an average of 11 children a day, are born with neural tube defects (NTDs) that occur when the spinal column fails to develop and close properly during the first month of pregnancy. The neural tube in a developing fetus later becomes the spinal cord, the backbone that protects the spinal cord, and all the nerves in the body, and any defect in the neural tube can lead to serious health consequences. Spina bifida accounts for half of all neural tube defects, and occurs when part of the spinal cord protrudes through the backbone and fails to develop normally. Thanks to improved medical and surgical care, most children born with spina bifida survive, although they may experience varying degrees of paralysis, loss of sensation in the lower limbs, difficulties with bowel and bladder management, hydrocephalus, learning disabilities, and latex allergies. Anencephaly, which accounts for the remaining 50 percent of neural tube defects, results from the failure of the neural tube to close properly at the upper end, causing a fatal condition in which most of the brain is absent. Infants born with anencephaly usually die at birth or within the first days after birth.
