Much about voice disorders still a medical mystery
By WILLIAM HATHAWAY
The Hartford Courant

Phyllis S. Peterson's voice has betrayed her for decades. The 75-year-old Portland, Conn., resident has a neurological condition called spasmodic dysphonia, which has reduced her speech to puffs of words she can only force out slowly and quietly. For nine weeks, Khalid El-Sayed's voice has taken a vacation. The third-year University of Connecticut medical student from New Britain hopes that treating his acid reflux will restore his voice before he begins a rotation next month at Hartford Hospital. Although research and imaging technology have given doctors much clearer insights into the workings of the human voice, much about speech a defining human ability remains a mystery.

Master of Science in Communicative Disorders
The Master of Science degree in Communicative Disorders (CDIS) provides for advanced training in the assessment and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders. The CDIS Program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and as such, enables students to meet the academic and clinical practicum requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) granted by ASHA. The master's degree is required as part of the minimum requirements to serve as a Speech-Language Pathologist in virtually all public schools, medical, or other private settings. Speech-Language Pathologists work with a variety of ages (i.e., birth through the elderly), clients with various disorders (e.g., language, articulation, fluency, voice, and hearing disorders), and in a wide range of settings (e.g., public schools, preschools, private clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers). Course requirements for a Master of Science degree in CDIS as listed in the 2004-2006 ENMU Graduate Catalog are detailed below. Descriptions of each CDIS course also follows.

DEFINITION OF SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS
Speech and language disorders refer to problems in communication and related areas such as oral motor function. These delays and disorders range from simple sound substitutions to the inability to understand or use language or use the oral-motor mechanism for functional speech and feeding. Some causes of speech and language disorders include hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury, mental retardation, drug abuse, physical impairments such as cleft lip or palate, and vocal abuse or misuse. Frequently, however, the cause is unknown.
Back to the Table of Contents
INCIDENCE Back to the Table of Contents CHARACTERISTICS A child's communication is considered delayed when the child is noticeably behind his or her peers in the acquisition of speech and/or language skills. Sometimes a child will have greater receptive (understanding) than expressive (speaking) language skills, but this is not always the case.

Spoken Language Problems
What is articulation?
  • Articulation is the process by which sounds, syllables, and words are formed when your tongue, jaw, teeth, lips, and palate alter the air stream coming from the vocal folds.
What is an articulation problem?
  • A person has an articulation problem when he or she produces sounds, syllables. or words incorrectly so that listeners do not understand what is being said or pay more attention to the way the words sound than to what they mean.
Is an articulation problem the same as "baby talk"?
  • An articulation problem sometimes sounds like baby talk because many very young children do mispronounce sounds, syllables, and words. But words that sound cute when mispronounced by young children interfere with the communication of older children or adults. Older children and adults have so many severe errors that their articulation problems are very different from "baby talk."
What are some types of sound errors?

Language is our most human characteristic. It is essential to learning, working, and enjoying family life and friendships. There are many ways to express language. Speaking, using sign language, writing, and using computerized communication devices are some of the most common ones. The professionals who are educated to assess speech and language development and to treat language and speech disorders are speech-language pathologists (sometimes informally referred to as speech therapists). Speech-language pathologists can also help people with swallowing disorders.
