Childhood Apraxia of Speech
General Information for Parents
Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS, also known as DVD developmental verbal dyspraxia, and DAS developmental apraxia of speech) is a disorder that is more easily defined by what it is not. It is not a muscle disorder. It is not a cognitive disorder (although it may have some impact on language as well as speech). The problem occurs when the brain tries to tell the muscles what to do somehow that message gets scrambled. It's like trying to watch cable t.v. stations without the right descrambler. There is nothing wrong with the t.v. station, and nothing wrong with your set. It's just that your set can't read the signal that the station is sending out. The child's language-learning task is to figure out how to somehow unscramble the mixed message her/his brain is sending to her/his muscles. The visible results (symptoms) of CAS are:
  • little or no babbling in infancy; few consonants
  • understanding of language much better than production of language
  • slow, effortful, or halting speech; sometimes seems to struggle

The master's degree program in speech-language pathology is designed to provide a broad spectrum of academic and practicum experiences necessary for the education of specialists who deal with disorders of human communication and swallowing. Clinical practical experiences are available in a wide range of professional settings including the JMU Applied Laboratory , various hospital and rehabilitation programs, and the public schools. The academic and clinical components of the program are consistent with the requirements for certification in speech-language pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and for health and education licensures in speech-language pathology by the state of Virginia. Applicants should have completed prerequisite undergraduate course work in speech pathology and/or related areas of study. Students may be admitted without these background courses but should be aware that appropriate undergraduate prerequisites must be completed.

Verified by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) May 23, 2005 Sponsored by: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose According to studies, speech disorders with unknown causes (idiopathic) affect approximately 5% of the population at some point in their life. Some of these disorders like, stuttering and cluttering, are known for being detected early, during speech development. Stuttering is characterized by sound and syllable repetitions and consonant/vowel prolongations. When stuttering is moderate to severe, it can interfere with a person's job and social activities. Speech articulation disorders are characterized by omissions, or substitutions of speech sounds. The speech of a person who clutters is often difficult to understand. People are often unaware of the errors they make when speaking causing treatment of the condition to be very difficult. The purpose of this research is to study an extended family whose members exhibit a pure form of speech articulation disorders In addition, the study will use data and information gathered from the study and use it to develop guidelines (criteria) for defining and differentiating patients with speech disorders.

Research Assistant (Graduate) BACKGROUND Motor speech disorders are serious communication disorders that afflict millions of individuals in the United States. Such disorders include stuttering and speech impairment due to Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis diseases. However, these speech disorders can be remedied to functional speech fluency with appropriate speech pathology treatment. There are many clinical approaches to treatment, but the treatment process can take months of repeated procedures that are costly and exceedingly generalized. Therefore, there is a need to develop a cost-effective, computer-based system to assist the patients in improving their fluency skills in their own homes on a daily basis. OBJECTIVE The objective of this proposal is to develop a real-time fluency therapy aid that will be affordable to speech pathology clinicians and patients with motor speech disorders. The computer-based system that will be developed can be used in the homes of the clients. This will improve their speech fluency control.

Overview
The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences offers a pre-professional major that focuses on the development and causes of various communicative processes involving speech, language, and hearing. Courses focus on the ways in which communicative disorders manifest themselves; the techniques used to analyze speech, language, and hearing disorders; and the current methods and therapies used to remedy these problems.
The requirements for this major ensure that students obtain a foundation in anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms, psychology, sociology, language development, and other disciplines necessary to fully understand both the development and breakdown of communication. The breadth of the discipline and the range of its applications make communicative disorders and sciences appealing to students with interests in diverse areas such as linguistics, psychology, allied health professions, and those who desire a more practical application of theory and knowledge. The two primary sub-fields in communicative disorders and sciences are speech-language pathology and audiology. An undergraduate degree does not require that a student specialize in one of these sub-areas. This specialization is earned at a post-undergraduate program. All CDS majors take courses in both speech-language pathology and audiology and gain a solid foundation in the fundamentals of both.
