Sore Throats
Overview
Most sore throats are caused by viruses. In these cases, antibiotics will not be effective in treating your symptoms. However, sore throats can also be caused by bacteria which can be treated with antibiotics. A sore throat may be associated with many illnesses. If you also have symptoms of allergies, a cold, or the flu, read the information under those headings.
Signs and Symptoms
  • Throat pain Red throat by itself or with blisters or ulcers (red spots) Red, swollen tonsils or tonsils covered with white spots/pus (Call the UHS 24-hour Nurse Advice Line.) Ear pain Body aches Tender, swollen glands in your neck Loss of appetite Fever Nausea/vomiting and/or diarrhea
Self-Care Measures

Sore Throat
A sore throat normally goes after a few days. Treatment can ease the symptoms. See a doctor if symptoms are severe or persist.
Sore throat (pharyngitis) is very common. It is usually caused by a virus infection. Soreness in the throat may be the only symptom. In addition, you may also have a hoarse voice, mild cough, fever, headache, feel sick, feel tired, and the glands in your neck may swell. It may be painful to swallow. Symptoms typically get worse over 2-3 days and then gradually go, usually within a week. You may also develop a sore throat if you have a cold or flu-like illness. Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils at the back of the mouth. Symptoms are similar to a sore throat, but may be more severe. In particular, fever and generally feeling unwell tend to be worse. You may be able to see some pus which looks like white spots on the enlarged red tonsils. What is the treatment for sore throat and tonsillitis?
  • Not treating is an option as many throat infections are mild and soon get better.
  • Have plenty to drink.

Updated on 6/30/2005 The most important thing parents can do when children develop sore throats is to make sure that the problem isn't strep, a bacterial infection that requires antibiotic treatment. Strep is diagnosed via a throat culture. (Or a rapid strep test, which takes only ten minutes but is not as accurate.) While the results may not be available for a few days, a doctor often can tell on the basis of observation whether strep is the likely problem and begin immediate treatment with antibiotics. The sore throat usually eases in 24 to 48 hours. Besides a very sore throat, symptoms of strep often include fever, swollen and tender lymph glands under the jaw, and a swollen and marked redness at the back of the throat that may have white dots. Those symptoms don't always mean strep, but they often do. (Another clue: suspect strep when there are none of the typical symptoms of a viral infection such as a cough, runny nose, hoarseness and eye irritation.)

Sore throats: what to know and do
of 3 Pharyngitis , the official term for a sore throat, is one of the most common symptoms prompting parents to consult a pediatrician. While sore throat is often used synonymously with strep throat and tonsillitis, a sore throat may be the symptom of any number of underlying disorders. WHAT CAUSES A SORE THROAT?
In preschool children, a sore throat is frequently caused by a virus. The respiratory viruses that cause colds and flu prevail during the winter and spring months, while the Coxsackie virus is more common in the summer and fall months. This type of sore throat may be accompanied by a high fever, difficulty in swallowing and physical discomfort. A strep throat is caused by the streptococcus bacterium. Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become swollen, and the entire throat may appear red and sore. Infectious mononucleosis, a viral disease that is common in older children and adolescents, can also lead to a sore throat and tonsillitis. In rare cases, a sore throat may be a symptom of

Does your child's sore throat mean a dose of antibiotics? Only if it's a proven case of strep say the experts.
Does your child have a sore throat? While viruses cause most sore throats, the streptococcus bacteria, otherwise know as strep, usually cause those that are accompanied by headache and fever. Thankfully, in this day and age of antibiotics, strep throat is not nearly the dreaded illness that it once was, says pediatrician, Dr. Diane Sacks. "In the past, 50 or 60 years ago, it was a very serious infection that was feared because it led to serious heart problems, rheumatic fever or problems in the kidney. Fortunately, penicillin came along and it killed strep very effectively."
Dr. Sacks adds that strep can still lead to scarlet and rheumatic fever if left untreated, so if your child has a very severe sore throat and swollen glands, the doctor needs to take a throat swab, and if it turns out positive, medicine must be taken for its full coarse of treatment to prevent some of the secondary side effects."
Still, don't assume that your child will be prescribed antibiotics even when it appears to be strep. Overuse of antibiotics has been blamed for the development of some strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Therefore, most doctors won't prescribe them unless the signs of strep are very clear and the swab is positive, says pediatrician Dr. William Feldman, editor of "The 3AM Handbook". He adds "people are developing guidelines that predict strep throat a little better. Now if the child with a sore throat, has a runny nose, no fever and there's nothing to see in the throat, then the chances of this being strep throat are quite remote."

    What is a sore throat?
A sore throat (also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis ) is a disease primarily located in the area around the tonsils. It can be caused by both a virus and a bacteria. A sore throat is partly a disease in itself and partly an effect of other diseases such as flu and glandular fever The disease is normally seen in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the disease are throat pain and trouble swallowing. If the disease is due to bacteria it can be treated with antibiotics. Usually there are no complications. How do you contract a sore throat?
By being infected by a virus or bacteria Infection by a virus may come from the same virus that causes colds and from an Epstein-Barr virus - the latter causes glandular fever. The infection originates from airborne droplets and hands that carry the infection from person to person. Among the bacteria that cause sore throats, the streptococcus group A is the most common. The incubation period between picking up the infection until the disease breaks out, is two to four days or sometimes less.

These organisms cause irritation and inflammation of the membrane, making the throat feel scratchy and sore. Throat inflammation due to a cold will usually diminish in 2-3 days, as the body begins to conquer the infection. In the meantime, there are some home remedies that can bring temporary relief to the throat.
    Natural treatment and comfort measures
GARGLE WITH WARM SALT WATER – It helps soothe the throat and reduces swelling in the tissues. This is the safest, least expensive, and probably the more effective treatment of a sore throat. Mix a tea-spoon of salt to an 8-oz. glass of warm water. Gargle every 3-4 hours. Contrary to popular belief, gargling with aspirin dissolved in warm water is not advisable as it may cause further irritation to the membrane. You need to swallow aspirin for the body to absorb it as a pain reliever.
SIPPING WARM LIQUIDS like hot tea or soup can be soothing to the tissues of the throat and help with healing by drawing circulation to the tissues.

    Sore Throat
A sore throat is a symptom, not a disease. A sore throat may be the result of a bacterial or viral infection or it may be the result of irritation caused by smoking, excessive loud talking, overly dry heated rooms during the winter, or the result of secretions from the nose draining down the throat in association with a cold or allergy. DIAGNOSIS:
Only 10% of sore throats are due to bacteria; the remaining 90% are the result of viral infections. Sore throats due to irritation or viral infection cannot be successfully treated with penicillin or other antibiotics. A bacterial infection may be suspected by the practitioner, but a throat culture is required to confirm the diagnosis. Throat culture tests require 24 - 48 hours before results are available. The Group A Beta hemolytic Streptococcus is only one cause of a bacterial infection - other bacterial infections may occur as well. If the throat culture should grow Group A Strep, treatment with an antibiotic is indicated, primarily to prevent heart and kidney complications. If your practitioner prescribes an antibiotic, it is important that you take the medication until it is gone to prevent these complications. TREATMENT:
  • Drink lots of liquids - the best things are warm liquids such as hot tea, soup or lemonade (8-12 ounces per hour). Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

  • Many common viruses, and even the viruses that cause mononucleosis (mono) and the flu, can cause a sore throat. Some of the viruses that cause a sore throat can produce blisters in the mouth and throat ("aphthous stomatitis"). Breathing through the mouth can produce throat dryness and soreness. TONSILLITIS AND SORE THROAT
Sore throats often involve the tonsils. These are the pair of rounded tissues on either side of the back of the throat. The tonsils help fight infections, but they can become infected themselves. Acute tonsillitis goes along with many throat infections, including strep throat. It is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 10. It usually lasts 4 to 6 days. However, tonsillitis can become a chronic or recurring problem in children or adults. ACUTE TONSILLITIS BEGINS WITH A MILD TO SEVERE SORE THROAT. OTHER SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE: * fever * swollen, tender neck glands * headache * muscle and joint pain * loss of appetite * earache * breathing through the mouth and * nausea or vomiting A person with tonsillitis should go to a healthcare provider for a THROAT CULTURE to check for strep throat. This is especially important for children. Cases of strep throat require antibiotics. It is very important to finish all antibiotic pills, even if symptoms go away. Get plenty of bed rest. Drink plenty of liquids, even though it hurts. Eat soft foods, such as ice cream, soup, or pudding. It helps to gargle with warm salt water. Many viruses, including mononucleosis, cause tonsillitis. These infections do not require antibiotics. For children age 18 or younger, use medication other than aspirin, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), to relieve pain or reduce fever.
