Sore Throat
While most parents are worried about strep throat when their child has a throat infection, their are also many viruses that cause infections that look very similar to strep. If your child has a sore throat with fever and a red, swollen throat or tonsils with white pus on them, then he should be seen by his physician so that he can be tested for strep throat. If the tests for strep are negative, then your child's throat infection is caused by a virus and antibiotics will not work. Viral infections of the throat usually improve in two to three days without treatment.
  • Strep throat : caused by the bacteria group A streptococci. It is most common in children over three years old and begins with a fever, a red, swollen throat and tonsils that can have a white coating of pus, swollen glands, decreased appetite and energy level. If strep throat is suspected as the cause of tonsillitis in your child, your doctor will do a throat swab to confirm that there is infection with strep bacteria. This infection is easily treated with antibiotics, usually penicillin. Your child will no longer be contagious after being on an antibiotic for twenty four hours. It is important to take a complete course of antibiotics to prevent your child from getting rheumatic fever.

Honeysuckle Sore Throat Syrup Recipe #117217
This was gotten off a botanical website and submitted by a girl named Deborah. She says this cured her little girl's strep throat when no antibiotics would. I love honeysuckle and it grows profusely here along roadside fences. You can mix flowers and leaves in proportion you like.

Antibiotics for sore throat (Cochrane Review)
Del Mar CB, Glasziou PP, Spinks AB ABSTRACT What's new in this issue Search abstracts Browse alphabetical list of titles Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 25 February 2004. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Sore throat is a very common reason for people to seek medical care. It is a disease that remits spontaneously, that is, 'cure' is not dependent on treatment. Nonetheless primary care doctors commonly prescribe antibiotics for sore throat and other upper respiratory tract infections. Objectives: To assess the benefits of antibiotics in the management of sore throat. Search strategy: Systematic search of the literature from 1945 to 2003, using electronic searches of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, issue 2, 2003); MEDLINE (January 1966 to May 2003); EMBASE (January 1990 to March 2003), and the reference sections of the articles identified. We applied no language restrictions. We used abstracts of identified articles to identify trials. Selection criteria: Trials of antibiotic against control with either measures of the typical symptoms (throat soreness, headache or fever), or suppurative complications (meaning: forming pus) and non-suppurative complications of sore throat.

The common cold and its annoying symptoms are caused by a viral infection that cannot be treated with antibiotics. However, there are a few simple actions you can take to minimize its symptoms:
  • Drink plenty of fluids Keep your immune system in top condition Stay well rested
Be sure to rest Give your body some down time to help it fight off the cold Drink those fluids Get plenty of water and other clear fluids to help thin mucous Take extra vitamin C Studies have shown 1 to 4 grams a day may make your cold shorter and less severe Use zinc lozenges Use lozenges containing zinc gluconate, zinc gluconate-glycine, or zinc acetate, providing 13 to 25 mg every two hours, to help stop the virus and shorten the illness Shorten sick time with echinacea At the first signs of a cold, take 3 to 5 ml of echinacea juice or tincture every two hours to make your cold less severe Get some garlic Help prevent colds with 600 to 900 mg a day of a standardized garlic supplement
These recommendations are not comprehensive and are not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. Continue reading the full common cold article for more in-depth, fully-referenced information on medicines, vitamins, herbs, and dietary and lifestyle changes that may be helpful.

Sore Throat
Sore throats are an acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the lower pharynx. Tonsils and the soft palate may also be inflamed. The main indication of a sore throat is pain when swallowing and sometimes a burning sensation and a tightness in the throat. Secretions may be discharged from the mucous membrane or the throat may be very dry.
Causes
Catching a cold is the most prevalent cause for sore throats, but they may also be the manifestation of other diseases. Breathing through the mouth, allergies and/or pollen in the air are other possibilities.
Remedies
Folk
Aloe vera juice Gargle with aloe vera juice two times daily. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) According to Dr. Jarvis in his classic Folk Medicine, the remedy to use to get rid of a sore throat is to gargle with ACV. The acidity should kill the bacteria on contact. Mix one teaspoon to 2 tablespoons in a glass of water. You can mix it as strong as you can stand it. Gargle one mouthful every hour, swallowing afterward. Repeat twice each time. This treatment can cure a streptococcic sore throat in 24 hours. The acid in the ACV is very helpful in soothing and minimizing the sore throat, and, if you swallow it, the extra potassium is also beneficial. Note : After using this remedy be sure to rinse your mouth with water to prevent the acid from eroding the enamel on your teeth.

A cough is a sign that nerves in the pharynx (upper throat), larynx (throat), trachea (main breathing tube) or large bronchi (breathing tubes in the lungs) are irritated. A sore throat, also known as pharyngitis, is visible as inflammation or redness of the tissues, sometimes with yellowish/white pus on the tonsils.
Causes
The most common cause of a cough in childhood is an upper respiratory tract infection, usually viral (such as the common cold) or could be bacterial. More serious infections include croup (viral laryngotracheitis), bronchiolitis whooping cough and pneumonia. It's not unusual for a child to have a recurrent cough due to repeated infections, but this can also be a sign of an underlying problem, such as

Why Do We Get Sore Throats?
Sore throats can occur for a variety of reasons. A sore throat is often one of the symptoms of a cold or the flu, and is also an indicator of a much more serious infection like strep throat or mononucleosis. A sore throat can also be related to other problems, such as allergies or even reflux, when stomach acids are regurgitated into the back of the throat.
Causes of Sore Throats
Some of the most common causes of sore throats include: Viral Infections Viral infections are the most common cause of sore throats, with the flu and the common cold as the usual culprits. Other, more serious, viruses include chicken pox, measles, and mononucleosis. These viruses are highly contagious and spread quickly. Sore throats associated with cold and flu will usually go away on their own, but the more serious infections may require medical attention.

How to Relieve a Sore Throat
Sore throats can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Most require no medical intervention, and will go away within two to three days. Here are a few tips to make a sore throat go away even quicker. Steps: Consider the cause: a bug that's going around the office, enthusiastic cheering, or perhaps something more serious, such as strep throat. There are instant strep throat test strips that can tell you in less than 30 minutes if you have strep throat. Be aware, though, that these strips sometimes deliver false negatives. Take an analgesic to reduce inflammation'aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for an adult, or acetaminophen or ibuprofen for children'as recommended by your doctor. Suck on throat lozenges if you are an adult'especially those containing menthol, benzocaine or phenol, which numb the throat. Zinc lozenges may also be helpful. Children should suck on cough drops or hard candy. Gargle with mint mouthwash or salt water.

79. The Scoop On Strep Throat
Strep throat gives you a sore throat and makes it hard to swallow. Find out more in this article for kids.
http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/infection/strep_throat.html
KidsHealth Kids Kids' Health Problems Infections
"It could be strep throat." Have you ever heard a doctor or your mom say that when you're sick and you have a sore throat? Strep throat is a disease caused by tiny egg-shaped bacteria (say: bak- teer -ee-uh) called Group A streptococci (say: strep-toe- kah -kye). These bacteria cause 15% to 20% of all sore throats and are found in your throat and on your skin. If a kid has strep throat, the doctor will probably give him or her medicine called antibiotics. These kill the strep bacteria. That's good news because sometimes strep throat can get worse and cause problems with other parts of a kid's body. In rare cases, untreated strep can cause arthritis (say: ar- threye -tus) or heart problems from a disease called rheumatic (say: roo- mah -tik) fever. Most of the time kids get the medicine they need and recover from strep throat very quickly. After taking the medicine for 24 hours, you will feel a lot better and will no longer be contagious. However, it is really important to take all 10 days of the medicine to make sure that you have treated the infection. How Do I Get It?

Sore throat
Definition
A sore throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow.
Alternative Names
Throat - sore; Burning in the throat; Pain - throat
Considerations
Sore throats are common. Most of the time the soreness is worse in the morning and improves as the day progresses. Like colds, the vast majority of sore throats are caused by viral infections. This means most sore throats will NOT respond to antibiotics. Many people have a mild sore throat at the beginning of every cold. When the nose or sinuses become infected, drainage can run down the back of the throat and irritate it, especially at night. Or, the throat itself can be infected. Some viruses can cause specific types of sore throat. For example, Coxsackievirus sometimes causes blisters in the throat, especially in the late summer and early fall. Mono and the flu can also cause specific viral throat infections.
