This brochure is a copy of an American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Public Service Brochure. This site maintainted by Peter J. Casano, M.D., (601) 932-5244 Jackson, MS What Causes a Sore Throat? Sore throat is a symptom of many medical disorders. Infections cause the majority of sore throats and are contagious. Infections are caused either by viruses such as the flu, the common cold, mononucleosis, or by bacteria such as strep, mycoplasma, or hemophilus. While bacteria respond to antibiotic treatment, viruses do not. Viruses: Most viral sore throats accompany flu or colds along with a stuffy, runny nose, sneezing, and generalized aches and pains. These viruses are highly contagious and spread quickly, especially in winter. The body builds antibodies that destroy the virus, a process that takes about a week. Sore throats accompany other viral infections such as measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, and croup. Canker sores and fever blisters in the throat also can be very painful. One viral infection takes much longer than a week to be cured: infectious mononucleosis, or "mono." This virus lodges in the lymph system, causing massive enlargement of the tonsils, with white patches on their surface and swollen glands in the neck, armpits, and groin. It creates a severely sore throat and, sometimes, serious breathing difficulties. It can affect the liver, leading to jaundice— yellow skin and eyes. It also causes extreme fatigue that can last six weeks or more.

So it has been nicknamed the "kissing disease," but it can also be transmitted from mouth-to-hand to hand-to-mouth or by sharing of towels and eating utensils. Bacteria: Strep throat is an infection caused by a particular strain of streptococcus bacteria. This infection can also damage the heart valves (rheumatic fever) and kidneys (nephritis), cause scarlet fever, tonsillitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, and ear infections.

A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow. Considerations Return to top Sore throats are common. Most of the time the soreness is worse in the morning and improves as the day progresses. Like colds, the vast majority of sore throats are caused by viral infections. This means most sore throats will NOT respond to antibiotics. Many people have a mild sore throat at the beginning of every cold. When the nose or sinuses become infected, drainage can run down the back of the throat and irritate it, especially at night. Or, the throat itself can be infected. Some viruses can cause specific types of sore throat. For example, Coxsackievirus sometimes causes blisters in the throat, especially in the late summer and early fall. Mono and the flu can also cause specific viral throat infections.

What is strep throat? What are the signs of strep throat?
Strep throat is an infection caused by bacteria. It is called "strep" because the bacteria that causes the infection is called streptococcus. Children with strep throat have a sore throat and may have tummy pain or a red rash with small spots. The rash is worse under the arms and in skin creases. Return to top
How is strep throat treated?
Your doctor may give you or your child an antibiotic. Antibiotics kill bacteria, which helps strep throat go away a little faster. It can also prevent a few rare but serious conditions that people with strep throat might get. It is important to take all of the medicine your doctor gives you. Return to top

What is a sore throat?
A sore throat (also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis ) is a disease primarily located in the area around the tonsils. It can be caused by both a virus and a bacteria. A sore throat is partly a disease in itself and partly an effect of other diseases such as flu and glandular fever
The disease is normally seen in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the disease are throat pain and trouble swallowing. If the disease is due to bacteria it can be treated with antibiotics. Usually there are no complications.

Sore Throat
There are many different causes for sore throats. Some causes are easily treated, some require antibiotics, and some cannot be treated at all you just have to wait out the cause, although over-the-counter medicines can help relieve the pain.
Sore Throat Due to Dry Air
This is actually quite common I get them a lot myself in the winter, especially in cold weather when I forget to fill up the humidifier tanks with water. If the air is dry, your throat can dry out a bit with your breathing and become sore. Solution: drink plenty of fluids and make sure your house is humidified properly. (I have noticed that furnace humidifiers do not do a very good job of keeping the house properly humid. Even with a furnace humidifier you may still need table-top humidifers to stay comfortable.)
Sore Throat Due to Coughs, Colds, and Runny Noses
Coughing by itself can make your throat feel sore. So can postnasal drip mucus from the nose dripping down the back of the throat. If you have a dry cough, cough suppressants some of which you can buy without a prescription can quieten the cough and cut down on throat irritation. If you are coughing because of postnasal drip, I believe you should

Sore throat
A sore throat may often be the first symptom of a cold or 'flu , but sometimes comes on in its own right. Most frequently, the cause is a virus, but in a sizeable minority of cases, the cause is bacterial.
Symptoms
Often a sore throat is associated with enlarged, tender glands in the neck, and this need not cause concern. They signify the body's defensive response to attacking infection, and subside after the infection has gone. Other symptoms may be headache and fever . There is often some sensation of neck stiffness associated with the glands in the neck, but if this is a prominent feature , then you should consult a doctor in order to rule out meningitis
Causes
Most commonly sore throats are caused by viruses eg adenoviruses, influenza , and sometimes glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis). Many other viruses may cause sore throats as well as bacteria eg streptococcus. There are other causes of sore throat, including thrush (candida), which is sometimes a complication of treatment with antibiotics or steroids, and also other, rarer problems. If your sore throat continues for more than a week, or you have any other reason for particular concern, then it is wise to contact your doctor for advice.
