Social anxiety is feeling apprehensive and nervous around other people. Underlying this is an intense fear of being embarrassed or humiliated in social or group situations where you feel that you might be watched or evaluated such as speaking in class or in a seminar. [back to top] How frequently does it occur? Although the research on its prevalence is mixed, social anxiety is generally found equally amongst men and women. It affects more than 7% of the general population at any given time. [back to top] What may I be experiencing? You may experience some or all of the following:
  • I am self-conscious in the presence of others. I feel people are watching, staring, or judging me when in social situations. I worry that others can see that I am nervous. Longer-lasting version controls 'social phobia' FRIDAY, Oct. 17 (HealthDayNews) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a longer-lasting version of the antidepressant Paxil for social anxiety disorder, according to the drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline. Paxil CR (paroxetine HCl, controlled release) was tested in a 12-week multicenter study among 370 people with social anxiety disorder. Also known as social phobia, the disorder involves an intense fear of being scrutinized by other people in social situations like parties or speaking in public. Symptoms include rapid heartbeat, sweating, shaking and upset stomach. Glaxo says it's one of the most underdiagnosed anxiety disorders. As with similar drugs used to combat anxiety and/or depression, side effects may include decreased sex drive, impotence, insomnia, tremor, and decreased appetite. Like stage fright, math anxiety can be a disabling condition, causing humiliation, resentment, and even panic. Consider these testimonials from a questionnaire we have given to students in the past several years:
I've never been successful in any math class I've ever taken. I never understand what the teacher is saying, so my mind just wanders.
What all of these students are expressing is math anxiety, In this essay we will take a constructive look at math anxiety, its causes, its effects, and at how you as a student can learn to manage this anxiety so that it no longer hinders your study of mathematics. Lastly, we will examine special strategies for studying mathematics, doing homework, and taking exams. Let us begin by examining some social attitudes towards mathematics that are especially relevent.

LINDA KALMAN M.A., M.S.W.
CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER
I am a trained therapist and a member of the Professional Order of Social Workers of Quebec (OPTSQ). My academic qualifications and professional experiences are numerous.
I have a private practice in Montreal. My specialties include helping individuals, couples, and families to deal more effectively with mental illness in the family , trauma, relationships, anxiety, disability, addictions, loss and bereavement.
The style of therapy I offer is an inter-active, two-way dialogue, free of judgements. Work with children is through play, which I have found to be especially effective when dealing with acting-out behaviors or emotional concerns.
Adolescents also seem to respond well to a more relaxed approach while family issues become easier to manage when the work is professionally supported and all family members feel heard.
For the individual, there can be much emotional pain when dealing with, for example, childhood events or in grieving a death or non-death losses such as divorce or illness. This is work we can do together.
