Information on Social phobia / social anxiety
What is it?
Social or public situations of any kind may induce this disorder which is often expressed as a fear of being the centre of attention, or of others noticing the sufferer's anxious behaviour. Social phobia can also be classed as 'specific social phobia' i.e. when there is social phobia only in specific social situations, e.g. public speaking. The fear of behaving in an embarrassing or humiliating way can lead to a complete withdrawal from social contact, as well as avoidance of specific social situations such as public toilets, eating out etc. The physical manifestations of this phobia include blushing, shaking and sweating etc. Top ^

Social Anxiety Disorder Social Anxiety Disorder (social phobia) is the third largest mental health problem in the world. The latest government epidemiological data show social phobia affects over 7 percent of the population at any given time. The lifetime prevalence rate the chances of developing social anxiety disorder at any time during the lifespan stands at above 13 percent. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It helps a person deal with a tense situation at school or work or helps you study harder for an exam, and keeps you focused on an important situation. In general, it helps one cope. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it has become a disabling disorder. There are five major types of anxiety disorders. They are:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
(OCD)
Panic Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD)
Social Anxiety Disorder
(Social Phobia) Social anxiety is defined as: the fear of social situations that involve interaction with other people. This includes the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated by other people. Social anxiety is often mixed up with panic disorder. People with social anxiety do not experience panic attacks.

Social anxiety disorder commonly causes the sufferer to withdraw from normal routines, especially those under which they come into contact with social situations or where they come under scrutiny. Social anxiety disorder is very closely related to agoraphobia as most social anxiety disorder sufferers also develop avoidance techniques to prevent high anxiety or panic attacks from developing. Therapy and the Role of Clinical Diagnostic Criteria
In my own face-to-face and online therapy practice , I do not treat clients as manifestations of mental illnesses in need of medical fixing. No one is merely a case of bipolar disorder , an obsessive-compulsive , or a paranoid schizophrenic . In my view, formal diagnostic categories hold some value in terms of contextual information, but they play a much less important role than the specific personal circumstances of a given client. If you are a client, you are first and foremost a specific, unique individual. Nonetheless, in my experience of working with clients who have received formal psychiatric diagnoses from other mental health professionals, I have often found that clients feel they lack adequate information about what these diagnostic labels actually mean. The entries in this section aim to provide the basic facts about each of several diagnostic labels. Please note that the diagnostic information provided here is for educational purposes only and cannot replace the advice of a qualified mental health professional. More information about diagnostic labels is available on the page on the DSM and ICD

Social Anxiety is more than "just shyness". It is an extreme fear that controls and cripples lives. Feeling nervous in social situations is common. A first date, meeting a new boss or making a presentation makes us all a little anxious. For persons with Social Anxiety, their fear reaches an extreme level and begins to control their daily lives. Avoidance in the short-term brings relief. Long-term consequences destroy lives. Often persons will avoid the feared situation at all costs, thus limiting their opportunities for career advancement, relationships and pleasure. Unable to perform daily activities like eating in restaurants, signing a cheque at the bank or using a public restroom can seriously limit their lives. Others follow through on their commitments, but suffer severe anxiety before, during and after the event.

Verified by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) January 13, 2005 Sponsored by: National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose The purpose of this study is to increase researchers' understanding of the biological basis of generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder. They will investigate how the brain activity associated with specific thoughts and feelings may play a role in these anxiety disorders. This knowledge will be used to design interventions to help those with these illnesses. To qualify for this study, participants must be evaluated via an initial telephone screening interview and material sent through the mail. Participants will then be required to make three visits to NIH. During the first visit, they will be asked questions about their general mood, degree of nervousness, thinking skills, and behavior. They will undergo a thorough physical exam, including an EKG, blood work, urinalysis, and a pregnancy test for women of childbearing potential. During the second visit, participants will spend about 2.5 hours doing various tasks while sitting and looking at a computer screen. These tasks will guide them to experience specific kinds of thoughts and emotions. Researchers will attach electrodes to the participants' hands to monitor the amount of electricity conducted by the skin. The third visit will be similar to the second visit, but participants will perform the tasks while lying in a MRI scanner.

Irrational fear of personal rejection constricts and damages lives, but it can be dispelled with treatment. Nearly half of Americans describe themselves as shy, and most of us can be nervous when we have to face an audience. But for a surprisingly large number of people, these problems are more than an inconvenience. What would otherwise be normal reticence or stage fright becomes a disorder when the resulting symptoms make individuals miserable or seriously interfere with their work, friendships, and family life. General Anxiety Disorder
Because anxiety is such a common emotion, general anxiety disorder — excessive anxiety about everyday problems — often goes unrecognized. Learn how to spot it, what causes it, and what to do about it. Most of us experience anxiety and fear at times. It’s a natural emotional, a physical response to stress, and a normal part of life. But for many people, anxiety is a chronic intruder, causing extreme worry and tension, even when there is little or nothing to provoke such strong feelings. It can be so persistent and overwhelming that it interferes with daily activities. Someone who feels excessive anxiety about everyday problems may have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
