Social phobia is an intense fear of becoming humiliated in social situations, specifically of embarrassing yourself in front of other people. It often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcoholism. Social phobia often begins around early adolescence or even younger. If you suffer from social phobia, you tend to think that other people are very competent in public and that you are not. Small mistakes you make may seem to you much more exaggerated than they really are. Blushing itself may seem painfully embarrassing, and you feel as though all eyes are focused on you. You may be afraid of being with people other than those closest to you. Or your fear may be more specific, such as feeling anxious about giving a speech, talking to a boss or other authority figure, or dating. The most common social phobia is a fear of public speaking. Sometimes social phobia involves a general fear of social situations such as parties. More rarely it may involve a fear of using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone, or writing in the presence of other people, such as when signing a check. Although this disorder is often thought of as shyness, the two are not the same. Shy people can be very uneasy around others, but they don't experience the extreme anxiety in anticipating a social situation, and they don't necessarily avoid circumstances that make them feel self-conscious. In contrast, people with social phobia aren't necessarily shy at all. They can be completely at ease with people most of the time, but particular situations, such as walking down an aisle in public or making a speech, can give them intense anxiety. Social phobia disrupts normal life, interfering with career or social relationships. For example, a worker can turn down a job promotion because he can't give public presentations. The dread of a social event can begin weeks in advance, and symptoms can be quite debilitating.

The Anxiety Disorders Clinic was the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of MAO inhibitor medications for this condition, a finding that has now been confirmed by several other research groups. Similarly, the Anxiety Disorders Clinic has taken a lead in testing the effectiveness of a variety of other medications for social phobia, including serotonin reuptake inhibitors, beta blockers and the novel "reversible" MAO inhibitors, which are safer than the previous generation of these medications. Anxiety Disorders Clinic researchers are also studying the physiology of social phobia, demonstrating that although social phobics experience a surge of adrenaline while speaking in public, this alone does not seem to cause the disorder. Alternative theories relating social phobia to brain and peripheral nervous system activity are currently under investigation. What Is Social Anxiety?
Social Anxiety Disorder, also known as Social Phobia, is characterized by a fear of being negatively judged by others. Anxiety may be experienced in a variety of social situations, including:
  • public speaking participating or presenting at meetings talking with a group of people being assertive with others dating or talking to romantic interests being watched while writing or eating having one-on-one conversations talking with authority figures
Many people feel temporary discomfort in these situations, because social anxiety is a normal part of life. However, people with social anxiety disorder experience fear in situations like these to the point that it causes them problems and missed opportunities. They may worry about upcoming social obligations for days in advance. They may experience physical symptoms such as a pounding heart, trembling or shaking, difficulty breathing, or other panic-like feelings when in a feared social situation. In an attempt to manage their anxiety, they might begin avoiding the situations that make them feel anxious, resulting in a limiting and unfulfilling lifestyle. Checklist for Signs of Social Anxiety Please take a moment to think about whether any of the following statements apply to you. If you answer "yes" to some of these statements, you may benefit from treatment for social anxiety.

Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)
Social Phobia is characterized by an intense fear of situations, usually social or performance situations, where embarrassment may occur. Individuals with the disorder are acutely aware of the physical signs of their anxiety and fear that others will notice, judge them, and think poorly of them. This fear often results in extreme anxiety in anticipation of an activity, a Panic Attack when faced with an activity, or in the avoidance of an activity altogether. Adults usually recognize that their fears are unfounded or excessive, but suffer them nonetheless. Symptoms of Social Phobia manifest themselves physically and can include:
  • palpitations tremors sweating diarrhea confusion blushing

This fear is recognized as irrational by the individual; nevertheless, the fear of judgment in social situations persists. People who have social phobia usually find it difficult to be introduced to other people ("I wonder what they're thinking about me; I'll bet they don't like me"), attracting attention to the self or being the center of attention, being watched while doing something ("They don't like what I'm doing; I must be making a fool of myself"), and feeling insecure and self-conscious in most public settings. Life is difficult for the person with social phobia because they feel they do not fit in with every one else. Something is wrong with them.

Many people have 'butterflies' or minor nerves before a date, party, or some other event that will put them on public display, but that usually does not prevent them from attending. Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can automatically bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, and inferiority. Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. If a person usually becomes anxious in social situations, but seems fine when they are alone, then "social anxiety" may be the problem. Social anxiety disorder (formerly termed "social phobia") is a much more common problem than past estimates have led us to believe. Millions of people all over the world suffer from this devastating and traumatic problem every day, either from a specific social anxiety or from a more generalized social anxiety. In the United States, epidemiological studies have recently pegged social anxiety disorder as the third largest psychological disorder in the country, after depression and alcoholism. It is estimated that 7-8% of the population suffers from some form of social anxiety at the present time. The lifetime prevalence rate for developing social anxiety disorder is 13-14%.

Social anxiety disorder, aptly described as "crippling shyness," usually begins in childhood or early adolescence, and the symptoms often persist for decades, a new study shows. The study, based on data from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS): Mental Health and Well-being, provides further evidence supporting the description of the disorder as an "illness of lost opportunities." People with social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, go through life feeling extremely uncomfortable or paralyzed in social or work situations because of their intense fear of being scrutinized or embarrassed. They either totally avoid social encounters, or face them with dread. According to data from the 2002 CCHS, social anxiety disorder is associated with lower educational attainment and reduced likelihood of employment, low income and dependence on welfare or social assistance, decreased likelihood of marriage or having a successful marriage, social isolation, higher rates of disability, and dissatisfaction with life and health. The majority of people with social anxiety disorder do not seek professional help, and those who do often wait years before doing so.

What is social anxiety disorder?
Social anxiety disorder, or social phobia, involves excessive self-consciousness and overwhelming anxiety in everyday situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school, and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation. There are three levels of social phobia: Performance social anxiety disorder - sufferers are only affected when performing in front of others (eg: severe anxiety about public speaking). Avoidant personality disorder - considered to be the most severe of the social anxiety disorders, this usually starts at an early age and is more common in males. This disorder means sufferers have problems functioing in social environments and as such have few friends and rarely marry. This level of disorder can be treated using similar methods to those used for:
