SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER Click here to return to the site WHAT IS SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER? Social Anxiety Disorder is a fear of being embarrassed, judged or evaluated negatively in social situations. Because of this fear, the person with Social Anxiety Disorder experiences physical symptoms of anxiety, and as a result tends to avoid the social interaction or social situation that brings on the symptoms of anxiety. The level of anxiety experienced by the person with Social Anxiety disorder is excessive, and results in substantial impairment in the person's social, emotional, interpersonal and occupational life. The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (1998:59, Supplement 17, 4:9) suggests two different major subtypes of Social Anxiety Disorder, generalised and specific. Generalised Social Anxiety Disorder is when the person fears a wide range of different social situations. Specific Social Anxiety Disorder is when the person fears only one specific social situation, such as public speaking, or only a couple of specific social situations. Social Phobia
    (Social Anxiety Disorder)
Social Phobia is characterized by an intense fear of situations, usually social or performance situations, where embarrassment may occur. Individuals with the disorder are acutely aware of the physical signs of their anxiety and fear that others will notice, judge them, and think poorly of them. This fear often results in extreme anxiety in anticipation of an activity, a Panic Attack when faced with an activity, or in the avoidance of an activity altogether. Adults usually recognize that their fears are unfounded or excessive, but suffer them nonetheless. Symptoms of Social Phobia manifest themselves physically and can include:
    • palpitations tremors sweating diarrhea confusion blushing

is a fear of public speaking. Sometimes social phobia involves a general fear of social situations such as parties. More rarely it may involve a fear of using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone or writing in the presence of other people, such as when signing a check. People with social phobia aren’t necessarily shy at all.
They can be completely at ease with people most of the time,
but in particular situations, they feel intense anxiety.
About 80% of people who suffer from social phobia find relief from their symptoms when treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy The medications that have proven effective include antidepressants called MAO inhibitors. People with a specific form of social phobia called performance phobia have been helped by drugs called beta-blockers. Social Phobia
Social phobia, also called social anxiety, is a disorder characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school - and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation.
Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation - such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others - or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social phobia can be very debilitating - it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends.
Physical symptoms often accompany the intense anxiety of social phobia and include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, and other symptoms of anxiety, including difficulty talking and nausea or other stomach discomfort. These visible symptoms heighten the fear of disapproval and the symptoms themselves can become an additional focus of fear. Fear of symptoms can create a vicious cycle: as people with social phobia worry about experiencing the symptoms, the greater their chances of developing the symptoms.. Social phobia often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcohol dependence.

    What is Anxiety?
There is no disputing the fact that fear and anxiety are normal parts of life. However, in order to fully understand what an anxiety disorder is, it is important to note the difference between the two emotional responses.
    • Fear is a rational emotional response to a real threat. Anxiety is an irrational emotional response to an imagined threat.
For instance, imagine you are walking down a dark alley in an unfamiliar city, and a stranger approaches you with a drawn gun. You experience fear, a normal reaction given this situation. If you walk down a familiar street in broad daylight and you begin to imagine some disaster is about to descend upon you without warning, you experience anxiety.
When discussing the various types of anxiety, it is very appropriate to speak of "worrying about worry." Individuals tend to chew on their anxieties and some often worry more about experiencing it than about the actual situation which causes it. There is a circular quality to this style of thinking, and the circle often develops maladaptive coping methods.

F or years, social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, has been underrecognized and undertreated. That situation is beginning to change, however, because recent research has shown that the disorder is highly prevalent, chronic in its untreated course, often associated with comorbid mental and substance-related problems, and capable of disabling those who have it. We now know more about recognizing social phobia and the types of interventions to which it is responsive. Clinical Features Social phobia is an intense, irrational and persistent fear of being scrutinized or negatively evaluated by others.
