Nothing for Sale! Welcome and Enjoy!

September 2005
Welcome to my website! My name is Chad Miller. Shy kid and Social Anxiety Disorder (formerly called Social Phobia) since teens, my Social Anxiety became pretty severe by late high school. At 26 I finally found out the name "Social Phobia" and that it was medically treatable. Substantial improvement in the quality of life is within the reach of most all with untreated Social Anxiety Disorder. Current research is being done to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment (onset in the childhood or teenage years is common).
A Recent Abstract on Social Anxiety Disorder:

(End of abstract)
Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder: Social Anxiety Disorder is a persistent fear of one or more situations in which the person is exposed to possible scrutiny by others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. It exceeds normal "shyness" when it leads to excessive social avoidance and substantial social or occupational impairment. Feared activities may include most any type of social interaction, especially small groups, dating, parties, talking to strangers, restaurants, etc. Physical symptoms include "mind going blank", fast heartbeat, blushing, stomach ache. Cognitive distortions are a hallmark, and learned about in CBT. Thoughts are often self-defeating and inaccurate.

Everyone has heard of alcoholism and depression, the two top mental health care problems. But number three on this list is social anxiety disorder , formerly called "social phobia". Very few people have heard of social anxiety disorder (the acronym of which should be the "true" SAD). H ow is social anxiety going to compete against all the other, but more unusual, mental health problems, such as schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, antisocial personality disorder, bipolar disorder, or even another anxiety disorder, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder? Social anxiety disorder, in comparison, is downright boring. It has no "strange" elements that are visible to others. There are no "sexy" elements to it.

According to research carried out in the United States, Social Anxiety Disorder (SA) is the third most common psychiatric disorder after depression and alcoholism. H owever, perhaps because by it's very nature sufferers of Social Anxiety are reluctant to talk about their problems or seek help, the condition is still not widely known amongst the general public, and was only recognized as a disorder in it's own right as recently as 1980. What is SA? Introduction More information Treatments Definitions I n it's simplest terms social anxiety or 'SA' is a fear of people: of being around, having to interact with, being watched, criticized or judged negatively by, other human beings. Social Phobia is an anxiety disorder where the sufferer fears being negatively judged or evaluated by others and therefore they are afraid of doing something to embarrass or humiliate themselves in public. Some common social phobias are:
  • Public speaking
  • Performing on stage
  • Dealing with authority figures
  • Eating and drinking
  • Writing
  • Dating
  • Using public toilets
  • Sexual performance
  • Taking an exam
  • Social encounters in general
Some social phobia sufferers may only fear and/or avoid only one specific situation whereas others may be concerned about several social or performance situations. When the social phobia sufferer is faced with one of their feared situations they may experience physical symptoms of anxiety such as:
  • dizziness
  • heart palpitations
  • tense muscles
  • dry mouth
  • trembling
  • nausea
Some sufferers do not experience physical symptoms of anxiety but feel very self conscious and afraid.
  • Shy /socially phobic people believe that other people expect them to behave perfectly and if they don't they will be seen by others as stupid and consequently be rejected.
  • Shy people also look for negative reactions from other people which distracts them focussing on the task at hand and seeing the positive feedback.

People with social anxiety disorder have a persistent, intense and ongoing fear of being watched, judged by others and being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions.( How it's diagnosed : Doctors use a set of questions to help determine whether you have social anxiety disorder. These questions focus on fears and anxieties surrounding being in social situations. They might also explore other problems, such as substance abuse or depression, which often accompany social anxiety disorder.( How it's treated : Treatment can involve medications, psychotherapy (talk therapy) or both. It is likely you will need ongoing treatment to prevent your social anxiety disorder from returning.( Paxil is the only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

You Can Overcome Social Anxiety Disorder-Social Phobia!!!
Social Anxiety Disorder also known as Social Phobia can be successfully treated! Welcome, this is a website designed especially for those who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder and are seeking professional help to overcome and/or learn ways to better manage their disorder.
Often someone with SAD suffers profound loneliness and intense emotional pain in an attempt to avoid rejection and/or the scrutiny of others while at the same time truly yearning for connection, friendship and intimacy. But today there is good reason to have HOPE that you can break the patterns that result in isolation and withdrawal from life.
I am a licensed therapist who understands personally what it is like to have social anxiety. I do not know of or pretend to offer a quick...simple..."CURE" because to date there isn't one. But SAD is clearly treatable, and for most sufferers real improvement is indeed achievable.
The materials I use have been specifically developed for the treatment of SAD. I have current training in and use the latest cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques. I offer both individual and group therapy for social anxiety/phobia. In individual therapy, a general treatment objective/milestone is active participation in a SAD CCBT group. My general therapy approach is to provide brief (16-25 sessions), goal-focused, cost-effective treatment that is delivered in a warm, safe and understanding therapeutic environment.

Facts about Social Phobia
Social phobia, also called social anxiety, is a disorder characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school—and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation. Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation—such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others—or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social phobia can be very debilitating—it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends.
