Snoring is the sound produced by obstructed breathing during sleep. People who snore have an increased risk of high blood pressure heart disease , and stroke . More study is needed to determine whether those snorers at risk for more serious problems are people who have actual pauses in breathing while snoring, called sleep apnea Blocked Airway
Snoring results when air cannot move freely through the air passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This causes vibration of the roof of the mouth and uvula (part of the soft palate), which creates the snoring sound. The smaller the airway, the more obstruction, and the louder the snoring. This airway obstruction can be caused by:
  • Decreased muscle tone in the tongue and throat Enlarged tonsils, adenoids, or other obstructions (i.e., tumors or cysts) Excessive tissue around the throat due to obesity Structural factors
    • A long soft palate (roof of the mouth) A long uvula Deformities of the nose or nasal septum Small chin, overbite, or high palate (in women)

Why does anyone snore? ). Certain structural abnormalities - enlarged adenoids or tonsils , abnormalities of facial bone structure, or obesity can disrupt this balance in the direction of more easy obstruction of the airway and hence more noisy breathing. During deeper, non-REM sleep (when we are not dreaming), breathing is regular but more shallow. There is marked relaxation of the muscles in the upper airway region, which causes increased resistance to airflow in the upper airway and may produce snoring sounds. When we dream, the the muscles of the upper airway relax even more. Breathing is more erratic with regard to rate and depth. There are frequent pauses, and snoring may be more pronounced. Snoring in children is a common complaint of parents. to some degree during childhood. The snoring may not be indicative of underlying problems with nighttime respiration, but it is potentially a sign of more serious underlying disease - obstructive sleep apnea.

Snoring Problem?
Getting the most appropriate treatment?
by Adrian Zacher L.O.T.A.
Last revision date: 06 March 2005
Lots of us snore. An estimated forty-five percent of normal adults (both sexes) snore at least occasionally, and 25 percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons, and it usually gets worse with age. The best advice is to consult a sleep medicine physician - he or she will have YOUR best interests at heart and will offer what is appropriate for you and your condition in conjunction with a review of your medical history. Where there are anatomical problems that obstruct or restrict the airway then surgical correction of these may be appropriate. This should be determined by a thorough ENT examination. Snoring in kids may predict hyperactivity
Study confirms earlier conclusions linking sleep disorders and inattention
WASHINGTON - Young children who snore could be at greater risk of becoming hyperactive later than those who sleep quietly, U.S. researchers reported on Friday. Their study, published in the journal Sleep, strengthens earlier conclusions linking sleep disorders and hyperactivity and also seems to confirm that it is the snoring that comes first. In 2002, a University of Michigan team reported that among 229 children studied, those who snored regularly were twice as likely to later be hyperactive or have attention issues than non-snorers. For boys under the age of 8, the rate was four times higher. Now, after four years of follow-up, the team has confirmed its finding and found even more cases of hyperactivity. They found that young children who snored were four times as likely to become hyperactive four years later. Dr. Ronald Chervin and colleagues said their findings held even after they took into account which children already had been identified as hyperactive during the first study.

Peer Review Status: Internally Reviewed I am not obese and I know that I do not have sleep apnea, but I have received several complaints about my excessively loud snoring. What can I do to remedy this problem? Snoring affects a lot of people, so you are not alone, however, it is something that can be a bother, and perhaps a medical issue. Snoring occurs because of upper airway obstruction. The soft tissues in the upper airway vibrate when you breathe in and out. Snoring becomes louder when there is more obstruction. This can become a medical problem if you are not taking in enough oxygen due to the obstruction, or if you are not expelling enough carbon dioxide. If your doctor has already ruled out sleep apnea, then consider talking to him or her about other snoring reduction aids. An example of a snoring aid is breathe right strips to help clear your nasal passages. Things to consider doing to help with snoring include:
  • Don't drink alcohol right before going to sleep. If you do choose to drink, quit at least two hours before you plan on going to sleep. Alcohol can relax the throat muscles, and that flaccid tissue facilitates snoring.

174. Injection Snoreplasty -- An Effective Cure For Snoring?
A new procedure for the treatment of snoring. This resource page gives information and links to journal research on this procedure.
Injection Snoreplasty
Injection snoreplasty is a relatively new method of controlling snoring that appears to be safe and inexpensive.
Designed to address the primary snorer (a Socially Incorrect Snorer , in our terminology), this procedure involves your doctor injecting a substance into your mouth to stiffen your upper palate. This reduces the vibration that causes snoring. The substance is a "sclerosing agent" that scars your palate. (Surgical cures for snoring can work the same way: your surgeon will use a laser, scalpel or radiofrequency device to scar and thereby stiffen your throat tissues. The trick seems to be identifying the tissues which are most responsible for your snoring. We're all different.) Effectiveness Initial clinical experience at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. involving 27 patients reported a 92% success rate in snoring control. Nineteen months after treatment, 22 patients evaluated the frequency and loudness of their snoring. 95 percent were willing to undergo the procedure again and would recommend it to others. Sixteen percent of patients reported a relapse of their snoring after treatment. One anecdotal article says that the snorer's spouse noticed a 50% reduction in snoring.

WARNING SIGN Snoring is not just an annoying fact of life It can mean danger ahead for those who do it By La Rue Novick
Staff Writer Imagine a foghorn blasting, a chainsaw buzzing, a diesel truck downshifting on a slanted grade or a garbage disposal gurgling. Some dear souls must live with sounds like these every night as they fitfully sleep beside snoring spouses. While some snorers nonchalantly dismiss concerns, jests and punches about the cacophony of sounds they make each night, they might want to take heed. Snoring is a symptom. And for some, the real problem is obstructive sleep apnea (commonly referred to as sleep apnea). According to the National Sleep Foundation, 90 million Americans snore, 37 million habitually. And of those, 12 to 18 million and possibly many more have sleep apnea.

Anyone who suffers from snoring will be well aware of the problems it poses.
Every day, no less than 1 in 3 men and one in ten women experience disturbance and broken sleep.
And the effects are not restricted to snorers themselves, of course the problem extends to everyone else around, notably to partners and other members of the family.
Persistent snoring has been known to reach 90 decibels, as loud as a passing train.
But while others may joke about it, the effects of snoring can be both distressing and serious. Apart from daytime tiredness, which is particularly risky to drivers, pilots and anyone operating machinery, it can also adversely affect the libido.
Worse still, without effective treatment, snoring is well-known to have a seriously damaging effect on marriages and relationships. The tragedy is that this common medical condition, just like a number of others associated with breathing, can easily be treated by a simple laser-assisted technique requiring one 30 minute session under local anaesthetic.

The Snoring ‘Epidemic’

( High-resolution image (312 x 207 px, 300 dpi) Snoring has reached epidemic levels across the world, forcing partners to sleep in separate rooms and driving relationships to breaking point, the head of a chain of sleep disorder clinics says. Brett Chamberlain, executive chairman of SnoreStop, said research had shown 30 per cent of Australians over the age of 18 were snorers or suffered sleep disordered breathing, such as sleep apnoea. He said it had reached epidemic proportions globally over the last 10 years as the baby boomer generation reached retirement age and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle gave rise to obesity. But he said aside from the health problems a bad night’s sleep causes snorers, snoring damages relationships as frustrated partners often sleep in a spare room to escape the deafening nocturnal noises. “The partners of snorers will often resort to sleeping in a separate room, which can ultimately change the dynamics of a relationship,” Mr. Chamberlain said today.

The Museum of Snoring: snorers are worse than criminals
Composer Johannes Brahms could outdo the whole orchestra with his snoring It is an open secret that snoring is extremely annoying at night, but it can also make some individuals lose their temper in the daytime. The museum exposition in Alfeld, a small town in Lower Saxony, is wholly devoted to the phenomenon of snoring and methods of fighting with those who snore their heads off. Poet Marina Novikova wrote a witty "Ode to Snoring", where this disorder was presented as a guarantee of immeasurable love: a woman is ready to forgive her lover for snoring if only he will sleep beside her.
