Snoring
Definition: Snoring is loud, hoarse, or harsh breathing sounds that happen while you are asleep.
Considerations: Snoring is common in adults and usually not an indication of an underlying disorder. Sometimes, however, snoring can be a sign of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea . This means you have periods when you are not breathing for more than 10 seconds while you sleep. These periods of "apnea" are indicated by a long period of silence just after you have been snoring. They are followed by a sudden snort or gasp when breathing resumes. Then, snoring starts all over again. If you have sleep apnea, this cycle generally happens several times a night. The major risk from this condition is stroke due to episodes when your brain is not getting enough oxygen. If sleep apnea is suspected, your doctor (or a sleep specialist) can test you for it by doing a sleep study either at home or in a hospital setting.
Common Causes: In most people, the reason for snoring is not known. The following are potential causes other than sleep apnea:

  • Snoring
Snoring is an age-old problem with many social consequences, including marital discord , separate bedrooms, even separation and divorce, and angry neighbors . Snoring usually occurs due to vibration of the tissue in the throat, usually while the patient is breathing through the mouth. A vibrating uvula Although in itself snoring is not necessarily dangerous, it may be a symptom of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders condition s which can be very dangerous. Until recently , the treatment for snoring has included such techniques as behavioral modification, weight loss, dental devices, nasal strips, drugs, and major (painful) surgery. But now, the treatment for snoring and many cases of sleep apnea may be a simple office procedure.
  • Sleep Apnea
    • Sleep apnea is usually obstructive; that is, the breathing passage is blocked between the nose and the voice box. If sleep apnea is severe enough, the oxygen in the bloodstream which is reaching the brain and other vital organs may fall to dangerous levels. The site(s) - or point(s) - of obstruction must be diagnosed before treatment can begin.

What are the causes of Snoring ? Snoring occurs when air does not flow smoothly through the air passages, or when the soft tissues or muscles in your air passages vibrate. Age can be a factor. The older you get, the weaker your throat muscles become. Weak throat muscles cause the surrounding tissues to sag and vibrate. Nasal blockages caused by allergies or a deviated septum (when the partition between your nose is crooked) can limit airflow through your nose. This forces you to breathe through your mouth where the more flabby tissue is located. Obstruction caused by enlarged tonsils. Too much alcohol or sedation at bedtime. Deformities in the nasal pathway. Being 20 percent over your ideal weight can cause snoring. Children with large tonsils and adenoids often snore.

(See End of this page for more information on UCI's Center for Snoring and Sleep Disorders) (It is important to understand the difference between Snoring and Sleep Apnea, because an individual may be afflicted with one, or the other, or both.) Tired during the day? Tired of a poor night's sleep? Want to go from this to this? Individuals who snore may also suffer from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). There are a variety of treatments for each disorder, and our Department has had extensive experience in treating patients who suffer from both kinds of sleep disorders. Many people snore. It has been estimated that anywhere from 30 - 50% of the United States population snore at some time or another. Significant snoring is sometimes described as "heroic" snoring, in which the snoring loudness may be heard more than two bedrooms away. Such snoring may cause several problems: Marital Discord
Sleep disturbances (from spousal prodding)
Waking episodes (from one's own snoring)
Frequent association with OSAS Snoring is not sleep apnea, and sleep apnea is not snoring. Snoring is a social problem, as indicated above, and may be associated with significant sleep disturbance, waking episodes, etc. without OSAS. However, many patients with loud snoring do have significant obstructive sleep apnea.

What is snoring?
Snoring is noise produced from the soft palate and other parts of the upper respiratory tract. It is most common in men, especially older, middle-aged and obese men.
Around 40 per cent of all adults snore.
Snoring can be very annoying for a partner who is kept awake by the noise. Often, because of this, couples sleep in separate rooms.
What is obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)?
Apnoea refers to short spells when breathing stops. In obstructive sleep apnoea, the throat is sucked closed during sleep. OSA occurs in 4 per cent of middle-aged people.
Normally when we breathe in, the pressure in our throat and chest drops below the outside atmospheric pressure, which is why air goes into our lungs.

FDA approves radio-wave treatment for snoring
Treatment shrinks tissues that block air passages
July 28, 1997
Web posted at: 10:52 p.m. EDT (0252 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment that uses radio waves to shrink tissue in air passages and eliminate snoring. The treatment, called somnoplasty, was created by Somnus Medical Technologies of Sunnyvale, California, which is expected to announced Tuesday that the technology has been approved. The treatment involves piercing the tongue, throat or soft palate with a needle connected to a radio frequency generator. The inner tissue is then heated to 158 to 176 degrees, in a procedure that takes approximately half an hour. The inner tissues shrink, but the outer tissues, which may contain such things as taste buds, are left intact. Forty million Americans more than one in seven people suffer from habitual snoring, according to a report by the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research issued in 1994. Another seven million to 18 million Americans suffer from a related problem, sleep apnea, but the somnoplasty was not approved for those problems.

95. Snoring: Not Funny, Not Hopeless
Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons, The noisysounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air

Snoring: Not Funny, Not Hopeless
This site maintainted by Peter J. Casano, M.D., (601) 932-5244 Jackson, MS Forty-five percent of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25 percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons, and it usually grows worse with age. More than 300 devices are registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as cures for snoring. Some are variations on the old idea of sewing a sock that holds a tennis ball on the pajama back to force the snorer to sleep on his side. (Snoring is often worse when a person sleeps on his back). Some devices reposition the lower jaw forward; some open nasal air passages; a few others have been designed to condition a person not to snore by producing unpleasant stimuli when snoring occurs. But, if you snore, the truth is that it is not under your control whatsoever. If anti-snoring devices work, it is probably because they keep you awake.
What Causes Snoring?
The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway (see illustration) where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing. People who snore may suffer from:
  • Poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat.

Snoring: Not Funny, Not Hopeless (This brochure is a copy of an American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Public Service Brochure.) Some 45 percent of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25 percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons, and it usually grows worse with age. More than 300 devices are registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as cures for snoring. Some are variations on the old idea of sewing a tennis ball on the pajama back to force the snorer to sleep on his side. (Snoring is often worse when the person sleeps on his back.) Chin and head straps, neck collars, and devices inserted into the mouth are usually disappointing as snoring cures. Many electrical devices have been designed to produce painful or unpleasant stimuli when the patient snores. The presumption was that a person could be trained or conditioned not to snore. Unfortunately, snoring is not under the person's control whatsoever; and if these devices work it is probably because they keep the snorer awake. Every chronically snoring child should also be thoroughly examined. Medical evidence suggests a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy will probably make an important difference in the health and well-being of the child. Remember, snoring means obstructed breathing, and obstruction can be serious. It's not funny, and it's definitely not hopeless.
