Snoring may be sound of a serious sleep disorder
March 30, 2000 Web posted at: 10:05 AM EST (1505 GMT) In this story: It can be dangerous Signs of sleep apnea A good night's sleep RELATEDS By Amy Durgan (WebMD) As Frank Ternan tells it, his wife Pat's snoring became unbearable when their boat was docked during a sailing trip on Lake Ontario 10 years ago. "We were all cooped up in a small cabin," says Ternan, of Calgary, Alberta, "and the snoring got worse and worse until (the bed) was vibrating back and forth." The couple's oldest son, Chris, unable to sleep, left his bunk in the middle of the night. Frank found him the next morning curled up on a bench on the dock.

Stop Snoring Today

Health Correspondent - Every 2nd Saturday
You probably know at least one person who snores. It could be your partner, parents, grandparents, or even Uncle Ned or Aunt Sophie that snore at various noise levels. Some laugh and make jokes about it, but it can be a symptom of a serious disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. And if it is obstructive sleep apnea, then it is no laughing matter; that individual needs to get evaluated by a sleep specialist. what is snoring?
Snoring is a noise produced when an individual breathes (usually produced when inhaling) during sleep , which in turn causes vibration of the soft palate and uvula (that thing that hangs down in the back of the throat). The word "apnea" means the absence of breathing. Unfortunately, men are hit with more bouts of disruptive snoring than women. Sorry guys, but even if you don't think you snore, you probably do. treatment for snoring
The most important point to make about the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), or Snoring Syndrome, is that effective treatment requires several related problems to be treated simultaneously. At least the following need to be addressed:

Dental surgeons say they've found why snoring can kill
Blocked airways increase blood pressure, damaging arteries and leading to stroke
August 16, 1998
Web posted at: 9:26 p.m. EDT (0126 GMT) WASHINGTON (Reuters) Dental surgeons said Saturday they have discovered why snoring can kill sometimes: It can actually cause damage to the arteries. Snoring is usually harmless, if annoying, unless a person has a particular disorder known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is marked by irregular breathing and snorting. Sufferers often stop breathing completely for up to several seconds. It usually affects overweight, middle-aged men and has been linked with stroke and heart disease. A team at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Dentistry set out to see what the physical mechanism is. Writing in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, they said X-rays showed it is more complicated than seems immediately obvious.

Snoring
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Snoring is the act of breathing through the open mouth in such a way as to cause a vibration of the uvula and soft palate , thus giving rise to a sound which may vary from a soft noise to a loud unpleasant sound. This most commonly occurs during sleep The cause of snoring is some kind of blockage in the breathing passage. Those blockages can be of many kinds—here are just a few:
  • Tongue falling into the throat Allergies Throat weakness causing the throat to close during sleep Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in muscles Fat gathering in, and around, the throat
The list of what can cause snoring is almost endless, but it is always some kind of blockage in the breathing passage. When the airflow in the breathing passage becomes irregular (because of the blockage) then the soft palate starts flapping. This flapping of the soft palate is what makes the snoring sound.

If you or your sleeping partner snores, you may think of snoring as merely a nuisance. However, snoring can have serious health and social consequences. In addition to problems stemming from sleep deprivation, snoring can cause more serious health problems. When snoring is a problem
Summary: Recognising the symptoms of sleep apnoea. Where to find help.
Text: We all know what snoring sounds like. But some people - especially overweight men over the age of 40 - have a different kind of snore. Now and again the steady rhythm of their snoring is interrupted by a few seconds of silence, followed by a few extra loud snores.
The reason for this is that the person's tongue, as well as part of their throat, has become so relaxed during sleep that they block the airway, making it hard to breathe. The loud snores following the silence mean the person is waking up and struggling for breath.
Called sleep apnoea, the condition affects about twice as many men as women - doctors think that about nine percent of men over 40 have sleep apnoea. For many of them it's severe enough to be a health problem. Although the person with sleep apnoea doesn't realise, he or she is waking up frequently during the night and not getting enough sleep. This can cause irritability and unusual drowsiness during the day - a serious problem for anyone who drives a car. Research in the US, for instance, has found that drivers with this condition cause more than twice as many road accidents as other drivers.

    Snoring Sends a Serious Signal
Snoring can be a lot more than an irritant to bed partners and other listeners. It’s often a symptom of progressive sleep apnea syndrome, a disorder that not only stymies the snorer’s slumber but also can have serious effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and even mortality. Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common disorder diagnosed through sleep studies, is a condition that not only interrupts a good night’s rest but can have significant effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even mortality. B. Tucker Woodson, MD , treats many snorers who suffer from sleep apnea. A Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences and Director of the Froedtert Center for Sleep, Dr. Woodson discussed sleep apnea and its consequences in a recent interview with HealthLink. “By far and away the most common sleep disorder that we see here (at the MCW sleep laboratory) is obstructive sleep apnea. It probably represents 80% or more of the sleep disorders that present to the physician for a sleep study,” Dr. Woodson said.
