They will soon begin trials, sending patients on specially-devised "singing for snorers" courses, to test the theory. Snoring - and the more serious condition, obstructive sleep apnoea - is caused when lax muscles in the upper throat vibrate during sleep. Knowing that professional singers use exercises to strengthen the same muscles to improve their voice, a British singing teacher carried out a small pilot study on snorers a few years ago. She found that the exercises helped some sufferers considerably, with one saying it had reduced her snoring "from a loud roar to a very quiet murmur". Alise Ojay, of Exeter, has since devised a "singing for snorers" course which will be used in a full-scale clinical trial. Advertisement: It will involve 60 chronic snorers and 60 patients with mild to moderate sleep apnoea, only half of whom will take part in the vocal exercises.

Researchers say the findings provide strong evidence that snoring and other symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea are major risk factors for hyperactivity in children. Obstructive sleep apnea, also known as sleep disordered breathing, is a common sleep disorder caused by a blockage in the airway that disrupts normal breathing during sleep. "To our knowledge, this new study is the first long-term, prospective research to show that regular snoring and other clues to the possible presence of sleep apnea predict future development of inattention and hyperactivity," says researcher Ronald Chervin, MD, director of the University of Michigan Health System Sleep Disorders Laboratory, in a news release. "These findings strengthen the hypothesis that untreated sleep-breathing problems in childhood can contribute to the development of hyperactivity." The results appear in the July 1 issue of the journal Sleep.
