Mouthpiece For Effective Snoring Relief Special Notice We are sorry but the U.S. Federal Drug Administration has ruled that we are no longer able to supply customers, in the United States only, with the SnorBan® Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece, the inexpensive, easy solution to eliminating snoring. The FDA believes that if you had obstructive sleep apnea but didn't know it, you would be relieved of it as a side benefit of using the SnorBan® Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece to eliminate your snoring. They believe if you did this without your doctor's or dentist's help, you might be at risk of not knowing you have sleep apnea. Unfortunately the SnorBan® Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece, which is designed to relieve snoring, also reduces the severity of sleep apnea on many people like other expensive custom mandibular advancement devices made by doctors and dentists. Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition and should be diagnosed and treated by your doctor. If you are a repeat customer, you are no doubt very disappointed at your inability to resume the normal life that you have grown to appreciate now that snoring no longer afflicts you. Because of this setback, we have found a new use for the former

Snoring
Forty-five percent of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25 percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons, and it usually grows worse with age. More than 300 devices are registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as cures for snoring. Some are variations on the old idea of sewing a sock that holds a tennis ball on the pajama back to force the snorer to sleep on his side. (Snoring is often worse when a person sleeps on his back). Some devices reposition the lower jaw forward; some open nasal air passages; a few others have been designed to condition a person not to snore by producing unpleasant stimuli when snoring occurs. But, if you snore, the truth is that it is not under your control whatsoever. If anti-snoring devices work, it is probably because they keep you awake.
What Causes Snoring?
The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway (see illustration) where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing. People who snore may suffer from:
  • Poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat. When muscles are too relaxed, either from alcohol or drugs that cause sleepiness, the tongue falls backwards into the airway or the throat muscles draw in from the sides into the airway. This can also happen during deep sleep.

During sleep, we usually pass through five phases of sleep: stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. These stages progress in a cycle from stage 1 to REM sleep, then the cycle starts over again with stage 1. We spend almost 50 percent of our total sleep time in stage 2 sleep, about 20 percent in REM sleep, and the remaining 30 percent in the other stages. Infants, by contrast, spend about half of their sleep time in REM sleep. For more, read the Sleep article.

Facts
  • Snoring arises when the air passage is blocked which inhibits easy and normal breathing during sleep.
  • When awake the muscles of the throat keep the throat open but when asleep these muscles go into a relax mode and sag inward. Snoring occurs when these muscles collapse (i.e. become too lax), creating a blockage at the airway.
  • The orchestrated snoring movement opens with the excessive vibration of the uvula and the soft palate as air is being forced through the narrow air passage way to reach the lungs. The soft palate is the upper surface of the mouth that separates the oral and nasal cavities. It is just behind the hard palate and it has no bones. The uvula is that small piece of soft tissue dangling down from the soft palate over the back of the tongue.
  • The sound of snoring varies with the degree of obstruction.

Snoring
What is snoring? Snoring is noisy breathing through the mouth and nose during sleep. It can occur when you are breathing in or out. What causes snoring and who is at risk? Snoring occurs when air does not flow smoothly through the air passages, or when the soft tissues or muscles in your air passages vibrate. As you fall into a deep sleep, the muscles in your tongue, throat and roof of your mouth (soft palate) relax. This muscle relaxation causes your throat tissues to sag. As you breathe, the sagging tissues narrow your airway and vibrate or flutter, creating the sound of snoring. The narrower your airway becomes, the greater the vibration...and the louder your snoring. Snoring affects 45 per cent of the population from time to time and an estimated 25 per cent of people are habitual snorers. There are a number of reasons why you may snore.

Throat anatomy Definition Return to top Snoring is loud, hoarse, or harsh breathing sounds that happen while you are asleep. Considerations Return to top Snoring is common in adults and usually not an indication of an underlying disorder. Sometimes, however, snoring can be a sign of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea . This means you have periods when you are not breathing for more than 10 seconds while you sleep. These periods of "apnea" are indicated by a long period of silence just after you have been snoring. They are followed by a sudden snort or gasp when breathing resumes. Then, snoring starts all over again. If you have sleep apnea, this cycle generally happens several times a night. The major risk from this condition is stroke due to episodes when your brain is not getting enough oxygen. If sleep apnea is suspected, your doctor (or a sleep specialist) can test you for it by doing a sleep study either at home or in a hospital setting. Common Causes Return to top In most people, the reason for snoring is not known. The following are potential causes other than sleep apnea:
