Lord Jeffrey The town of Amherst, Massachusetts , was named for Lord Jeff even before he became a Lord. Amherst College was later named after the town. It is said the local inhabitants who formed the town preferred another name, Norwottuck , after the Indians whose land it had been; the colonial governor substituted his choice for theirs. Frank Prentice Rand, in his book, The Village of Amherst: A Landmark of Light [Amherst, MA: Amherst Historical Society, 1958], says that at the time of the naming, Amherst was "the most glamorous military hero in the New World. ... ...the name was so obvious in 1759 as to be almost inevitable." Brief Synopsis of Smallpox
Smallpox lesions on skin are shown in this photograph taken in 1973 in Bangladesh. Smallpox infection was eliminated from the world in 1977. Smallpox is caused by variola virus with an incubation period of about 12 days following exposure. Initial symptoms include high fever, fatigue, and head and back aches. A characteristic rash, most prominent on the face, arms, and legs, follows in 2-3 days. The rash starts with flat red lesions that evolve at the same rate. Lesions become pus-filled and begin to crust early in the second week. Scabs develop and then separate and fall off after about 3-4 weeks. The majority of patients with smallpox recover, but death occurs in up to 30% of cases. Routine vaccination against smallpox ended in 1972. Microbiology and other forms
Smallpox, a DNA virus, is a member of the genus orthopoxvirus. The orthopoxviruses are among the largest and most complex of all viruses.

Vaccinated people can transmit vaccinia virus WASHINGTON (CNN) Representatives of the nation's largest union of health care workers Wednesday said they will not oppose a government plan to vaccinate medical workers for smallpox, although they still have serious safety concerns about it. The announcement came after meeting with top federal health officials. President Bush is prepared to announce in coming days the first large-scale smallpox vaccinations in more than two decades a controversial plan because the vaccine can bring side effects including, in rare cases, death. "The meeting was productive, positive and continuing," a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said.

WASHINGTON (AP) After months of delay, the Bush administration is proposing a compensation fund for people injured by the smallpox vaccine, trying to plug the most prominent hole in its inoculation program. The proposal, which Congress would have to approve, is based on a similar compensation package now available to police officers and firefighters injured on the job. Under the plan, the government would pay $262,100 for each person who dies or is permanently and totally disabled by the vaccine. Those less severely injured could receive up to $50,000 plus medical expenses. The vaccine, effective in preventing the transmission of the highly contagious disease, carries rare but serious risks, including death. Smallpox was declared eradicated globally in 1980, but there is fear it could return in an act of bioterrorism.

Smallpox
Introduction
Definition Smallpox is a highly contagious and virulent, often fatal infectious disease caused by variola virus, a large orthopoxvirus of the family Poxviridae, subfamily Chordopoxvirinae. The 2 classic varieties of smallpox are variola major and variola minor, each of which confers immunity against the other. Variola minor is less virulent and is found mainly in South America and West Africa. Hemorrhagic smallpox is a severe and highly fatal variety of the disease in which hemorrhages develop in the skin and mucous membranes. Flat smallpox is a severe variety in which lesions do not project above the skin surface. Synonyms Smallpox is also known as variola or variola vera. Variola minor has many synonyms and local names, such as alastrim, amaas, cottonpox, milkpox, whitepox, and Cuban itch. Smallpox is often subdivided according to clinical presentation into variola vera discreta (discrete papules) and variola vera confluens (confluent papules). Hemorrhagic smallpox, also known as fulminant smallpox, is subdivided clinically into purpura variolosa and variola pustulosa haemorrhagica ( ). Malignant smallpox is another name for flat smallpox.

CDC preparing for possible smallpox threat
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) The federal government is working to amass enough smallpox vaccine to protect everyone in the country and already has inoculated some of its workers, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday. "Our intention at this time, and that of the Department of Health and Human Services, is to have enough vaccine available so that anybody who needs it will get it," CDC Director Dr. Jeffrey Koplan told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer." The United States has a 25-year-old stockpile of 15 million doses against smallpox, which was declared eradicated globally in 1977. The United States routinely vaccinated against the disease until 1972. Now, the CDC is training medical personnel to recognize and handle an outbreak of the disease, fearing terrorists may have socked away stores of the virus with plans to unleash the disease.
