Q:
My mother got severe pains today, we went to our Dr. he gave her a muscle relaxant and told her to stay in bed for 3 days. He said we found it very early and she should be ok in 3 days. However i am really worried about my mother, i am wondering will she be ok based on the info i have given you, and will she have a good recovery w/o surgery. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. D.P.
A:
90% of acute low back pain will resolve within 3-6 months. A few days of bed rest is reasonable for acute low back pain. Prolonged bed rest causes deconditioning and therefore can worsen long term recovery. For acute herniated disc without myelopathy or cauda equina syndrome, a few days of bed rest followed by a monitored, progressive back stabilizing exercise program are the usual recommendation. Oral steroids can be prescribed to reduce inflammation caused by the herniated disc. Epidural injection can also be employed. Other modalities including traction, accupunture can be helpful. Treatment program is highly individualized. Please discuss with your physician. Conservative therapy enjoys the same successful outcome at one year as surgery. Surgery offers faster pain relief. However, at one year, there is little difference in terms of pain relief and function between the non surgery and surgery groups.

The Back Pain Problem
Back ache, lumbago, disc rupture, slipped disc, back spasms, sciatica - call it what you like, the pain's the same.
It starts right smack in the low back and grows hour by hour while you slouch at your computer, at the ball-game or behind the wheel on a long trip. Sound familiar? Experts say, back pain can often be prevented by developing simple habits - like sitting straight. But when it comes to sitting, simple is not easy. Developing the strength to sit straight is, in fact, a feat rarely achieved. Our muscles tire easily and we soon find ourselves crumpled up in a painful slump against the back of our chair. As a rule of thumb, if your feel back pain, you're injuring your back. When your muscles give up, lasting disc damage begins. You know what happens when you bite one side of a soft ice cream sandwich: all the good stuff squishes out the back, right? Similarly, when you slouch, your vertebrae "bite' down on the front side of your lumbar discs. This uneven pressure makes the soft fluid core bulge against the back of the disc. Over time this can lead to disc degeneration and very serious back problems. How the Nada Chair can help Nada-Chair products are not a cure for back problems. On the other hand, our supports can provide the critical help you need in preventing these problems from developing in the first place. Nada-Chair corrects back posture and as a bonus give you the most comfortable sitting experience Money can buy.

Herniated Intervertebral Disk Symptoms Back or neck pain that worsens with movement, coughing, sneezing, or straining. Pain that radiates from the spine down the arm or leg. Pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks, a leg (sciatica), or an arm, usually on one side. Back pain not relieved by over-the-counter pain relievers. When To Call Your Doctor See a doctor if you have herniated disk symptoms. Call an ambulance immediately if someone suffers a serious back or neck injury. Keep the patient still until help arrives.
What Is It? A herniated disk, also known as a slipped disk, is a protrusion of the central portion of one of the flat, circular pads found in the joints between the bones of the spine (vertebrae). A slipped disk can cause symptoms by pressing either on a nerve leaving the spinal cord or on the spinal cord itself. Each disk has a soft and gelatinous inner portion surrounded by a tough outer ring that allows it to act as a shock absorber between the bones of the spine. Weakness or trauma may allow the inner portion to push through the outer ring (in some cases compressing one of the spinal nerves and causing pain and numbness in the neck or along an arm or leg). A herniated disk may then rupture. In a rupture, the soft gel squeezes through the outer shell and may press on the nerves. The intervertebral disks in the neck and especially the lumbar spine are the most likely to rupture.

Hi LaDonna, It's probably just the baby doing its thing in there. Your round ligaments are still stretching, especially as this is the "home stretch" and baby puts on a lot of weight in this trimester. Sciatica also tends to be worse now. And that's on top of everything else for you. I understand some of this, as I'm a 32 weeker. I had some troublesome back pain about 2 weeks ago, went to the hospital, and was sent home with a prescription for antibiotics for a possible UTI and ordered to drink more water. But, my back pain was not consistent throughout the pregnancy like yours. I, in my pregnant opinion, would suspect that an original problem is exacerbated by a growing baby. Hopefully, a doc or med prof will appear and give you some feedback. Good luck as it won't be long now. At Sat, 6 Apr 2002, LaDonna wrote:

slipped disk or pinched nerve before conception
From: LaDonna anonymous@obgyn.net

I had back back pains for about a month before I found out I was pregnant. I am now 33 weeks pregnant and my doctor says there is nothing he can do about my back until after birth because he can't do x-rays. But he says he thinks I could have a slipped disk. He bent me like a pretzel trying to figure it out and now doesn't know if it could be a pinched nerve instead. And since this came before I conceived, I don't think the baby is causing it, but it's gotten worse. Sometimes I can just be walking and the way my foot lands on the floor can shoot a pain straight through me. It numbs my leg and has caused me to fall a few times, luckily not hard enough to cause problems. I also can't lay down and turn from one side to another. Has anyone ever had this problem? And could you tell me what you think it may be and anything I can do for it since there's not much the doctors can do for me?

Herniated nucleus pulposus (slipped disk)
Definition: Herniated nucleus pulposus, or slipped disk, is a condition in which part or all of the soft, gelatinous central portion of an intervertebral disk (the nucleus pulposus) is forced through a weakened part of the disk. This results in back pain and leg pain (lumbar herniation) or neck pain and arm pain (cervical herniation) due to nerve root irritation.
Alternative Names: Lumbar radiculopathy; Cervical radiculopathy; Herniated intervertebral disk; Prolapsed intervertebral disk; Slipped disk; Ruptured disk
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The bones of the spinal column, or vertebrae, run down the back connecting the skull to the pelvis. These bones protect nerves as they exit the brain and travel down the back and then to the entire body. The spinal column is divided into several segments the cervical spine (the neck), the thoracic spine (the part of the back behind the chest), the lumbar spine (lower back), and sacral spine (the part connected to the pelvis that does not move). The spinal vertebrae are separated by cartilage disks filled with a gelatinous substance, which provide cushioning to the spinal column. These disks may herniate (move out of place) or rupture from trauma or

In any event, once you get in the water, everything becomes pretty much weightless, so SCUBA may actually be less stressful than land-based activities.

Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with slipped disk is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so. Related Conditions/Synonyms herniated disk Description This is a 3-in-1 reference book. It gives a complete medical dictionary covering hundreds of terms and expressions relating to slipped disk. It also gives extensive lists of bibliographic citations. Finally, it provides information to users on how to update their knowledge using various Internet resources. The book is designed for physicians, medical students preparing for Board examinations, medical researchers, and patients who want to become familiar with research dedicated to slipped disk. If your time is valuable, this book is for you. First, you will not waste time searching the Internet while missing a lot of relevant information. Second, the book also saves you time indexing and defining entries. Finally, you will not waste time and money printing hundreds of web pages.

In the hectic year 2001, Goem played around the world: at Mutek, in Japan, England, Austria, the UK, Spain, France and in between on various locations they worked on their 'Abri' CD, which was released later in 2001. Also they organised the 'Gast' CD, with various people (Matmos, Taylor Deupree, Richard Chartier etc) at the controls of Goem equipment. For the constant changing minds of Goem all of this activity was also the end of an area. It was thought that the working methods of Goem had been well-explored and nothing needed to be added. In the 2002 they produced a three minute sound piece for an installation and after that: silence. With Peter Duimelinks and Roel Meelkop in Rotterdam and Frans de Waard in Nijmegen it was also not very easy to meet up, also due to their personal busy schedules.
Early 2004 Frans de Waard got access to the sound studio connected to local arts initiative Extrapool, notorius for the recordings of the Brombron project. In the studio a wide array of vintage synthesizers can be found and new Goem recordings were made. Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard recorded a remix of Esplendor Geometrico and Peter Duimelinks and Frans de Waard a soon to appear 10" record for Auf Abwegen. With all machinery at hand, Frans de Waard also recorded eleven new tracks as Goem. Expanding on the known concept, he now incorporated breaks in the music, and some tracks do not rely on samples but on pure synthesizer tones; others were solely recorded using software. This record breaks away from the old Goem and walks new paths. Goem as a trio will continue to exist and record new material in the future.

General Illness Information
Medical Term:

Disk, Ruptured Common Name: Herniated disk, Slipped Disk Description: A herniated disk is a spinal disk which has collapsed and is bulging into the spinal cord, pressing on the spinal cord or the nerves emanating from it. This occurs as a result of degeneration of the ligaments and tissues surrounding a spinal disk (i.e.. the cushion separating bony spinal vertebrae). The disks of the lower back (lumbar) or neck (cervical) are the most common sites. 80% of cases of lumbar disk protrusion occur at the L5-S1 level. In the neck the commonest site affected is at the C6-C7 level. When it affects the cervical spine, it is called cervical spondylosis. This condition usually affects middle-aged and older adults. Causes: Degeneration of ligaments with or without back injury (acute or chronic) leads to slipped disk. Prevention: Prevent back injury by p racticing proper posture when lifting. Also, exercise regularly to maintain good muscle tone.
