LOW BACK SLIPPED DISK (Herniated Lumbar Disk) For more Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Information Check out EMEDx.com Definition Abnormal movement of the material (disk) that helps support the bones of the lower back. Details Disks are found between the bones of the back (vertebrae). They can at times push out of their normal position (herniate) and then cause symptoms. Causes A slipped disk or herniation usually results from an twisting injury to the low back or may be due to several small sprains. Diagnosis Typically, pain and spasm begin either immediately after an injury or develop within the 24 hours. The pain is made worse by activity and usually improves with rest. The pain may start in the lower back but also can radiate to the legs. This can be felt as a sharp or shooting pain down the leg into the knee, ankle or foot. It may be accompanied by either numbness or weakness. Initially x-rays may be taken to evalute the back. An MRI Scan or CT scan may also be ordered depending on the symptoms and physical examination.

Encyclopedia
slipped disc, rupture or herniation of an intervertebral disc. These discs separate and cushion the vertebrae, the segments of the spinal column . They are composed of an outer rim of fibrous connective tissue and a gelatinlike inner core. If the fibrous rim breaks the core may leak into the spinal canal, resulting in severe pain that is aggravated by bending, straining, or coughing. Material from the disc may press on spinal nerves and cause numbness or tingling, weakness, or paralysis in the area of the body enervated by those nerves. Slipped discs occur as a result of severe strain or without any apparent stress at all. They are most common in the lower back and neck. Treatment consists of bed rest, usually with a hard board placed beneath the mattress, local application of heat, and the administration of muscle relaxants to relieve spasms. If natural healing fails to occur surgery may be required to remove the disc, and the affected vertebrae fused to keep them from rubbing together. Medical slipped disk

Damage to the vertebral disks in the lumbar region of the spine is very common. There are usually several factors that may be responsible for the occurrence of a slipped disk:
  • A congenital weakness of the vertebral disk tissue,
  • A sudden twisting of the trunk,
  • Lifting or sliding heavy objects.
Often, it is a matter of bad muscle condition. In addition, smoking has a negative influence on the quality of the vertebral disk tissue - for example, as a result of a bad blood circulation. A slipped disk comprises an outward protrusion towards the rear of the intervertebral disk in the direction of the spinal cord, whereby at certain times or permanently, pressure is exerted upon one of the nerve roots.

Fortunately, only a few patients suffer from this complaint, which effects the immediate vicinity of the heart and the lung. If it becomes necessary, a conventional, open operation constitutes a very heavy strain on the patient and is complex and fraught with risk. In most cases, an intervention of this nature involves the removal of a rib and the release of air from one side of the lung. After removing the slipped disk by the conventional method, the entire spinal disk becomes stiffened. The subsequent therapy is long-drawn-out and the healing process is very painful.
Here at our clinic, we have recently developed a method by means of which we are able to apply the minimal invasive, endoscopic removal of a slipped disk even from the thoracic spine. The operation is performed comfortably under local anaesthetic. The patient is able to leave the clinic the day after the operation usually without considerable pain. The treated intervertebral disk segment remains freely movable. Even serious cases of slipped disk can be remedied in this way.

Herniated nucleus pulposus (slipped disk)
Definition
Herniated nucleus pulposus, or slipped disk, is a condition in which part or all of the soft, gelatinous central portion of an intervertebral disk (the nucleus pulposus) is forced through a weakened part of the disk. This results in back pain and leg pain (lumbar herniation) or neck pain and arm pain (cervical herniation) due to nerve root irritation.
Alternative Names
Lumbar radiculopathy; Cervical radiculopathy; Herniated intervertebral disk; Prolapsed intervertebral disk; Slipped disk; Ruptured disk
Causes
The bones of the spinal column, or vertebrae, run down the back connecting the skull to the pelvis. These bones protect nerves as they exit the brain and travel down the back and then to the entire body.

Slipped Disk Overview
The disks are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. Although they do not actually "slip," a disk may split or rupture. This can cause the disk to fail, allowing the gel to escape into the surrounding tissue. The leaking jellylike substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause pain either around the damaged disk or anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve. This condition is also known as a herniated, ruptured, prolapsed, or, more commonly, slipped disk. The most frequently affected area is the low back, but any disk can rupture, including those in the neck. Internal 'shock absorber' often goes awry (HealthDay News) You've probably heard people say they have a "slipped" or "ruptured" disk in their back. What they're describing is a common source of lower back pain called a herniated disk, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says. Disks are rubbery pads between the vertebrae that make up the spinal column. In the middle of the spinal column is the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord and other nerve roots. The disks between the vertebrae let the back bend and act as shock absorbers. The outer edge of the disk is a ring of cartilage called the annulus. The center of the disk is a gel-like substance called the nucleus. A disk herniates or ruptures when part of the center nucleus pushes the outer edge of the disk into the spinal canal and puts pressure on the nerves. Low back pain affects an estimated four of five people, so pain alone isn't enough to recognize a herniated disk. The most common symptom of a herniated disk is sciatica, a sharp, shooting pain from the buttocks down the back of one leg. This is caused by pressure on the spinal nerve. Other symptoms include weakness in one leg, tingling or numbness in one leg or a burning pain in the back.
