Nighttime dying linked to sleep apnea from brain cell loss
UCLA study scrutinizes loss of cells in brain's breathing command-post
Aim to grow old and die peacefully in your sleep? Be careful what you wish for. A new UCLA study suggests that some people die in their sleep because they stop breathing due to a cumulative loss of cells in the brain's breathing command-post. The online edition of Nature Neuroscience reports the findings on Aug. 7. "We wanted to reveal the mechanism behind central sleep apnea, which most commonly affects people after age 65," explained Jack Feldman, principal investigator and Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "Unlike obstructive sleep apnea – in which a person stops breathing when their airway collapses central sleep apnea is triggered by something going awry in the brain's breathing center." Feldman's team had earlier pinpointed a brainstem region they dubbed the preBötzinger complex (preBötC) as the command post for generating breathing in mammals, and identified a small group of preBötC neurons responsible for issuing the commands. This time, the researchers studied the role of the preBötC neurons in generating breathing during sleep, and what would happen if these brain cells were destroyed.

Sleep Apnea
WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?
General Description of Sleep Apnea and Snoring
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person stops breathing during the night, perhaps hundreds of times, usually for periods of 10 seconds or longer and sometimes for as long as a minute. In most cases the person is unaware of it, although sometimes they awaken and gasp for breath. It is usually accompanied by snoring. People who have sleep apnea may not even be aware of the condition, but it inevitably causes daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea is generally categorized as obstructive, central, or mixed. A less severe form of obstructed breathing called upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) is also worth mentioning.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form of apnea, occurs when tissues in the upper throat (or airway) collapse at intervals during sleep, thereby blocking the passage of air. In general, OSA occurs as follows:
  • On its way to the lungs, air passes through the nose, mouth, and throat (known as the upper airway).

Obstructive sleep apnea
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Repeated, prolonged episodes of cessation of breathing during sleep. See also sleep disorders
Alternative Names: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome; Sleep apnea syndrome; Sleep apnea
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: In normal conditions, the muscles of the upper part of the throat keep this passage open to allow air to flow into the lungs. These muscles usually relax during sleep, but the passage remains open enough to permit the flow of air. Some individuals have a narrower passage, and during sleep, relaxation of these muscles causes the passage to close, and air cannot get into the lungs. Loud snoring and labored breathing occur. When complete blockage of the airway occurs, air cannot reach the lungs. For reasons that are still unclear, in deep sleep, breathing can stop for a prolonged period of time (often more than 10 seconds). These periods of lack of breathing, or apneas, are followed by sudden attempts to breathe. These attempts are accompanied by a change to a lighter stage of sleep. The result is fragmented sleep that is not restful, leading to excessive daytime

Obstructive Sleep Apnea
What is obstructive sleep apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a debilitating sleep and breathing disorder defined as the cessation of breathing for 10 seconds or more (an apnea) at least five times per hour of sleep. During sleep, the body's muscles relax, which can cause excess tissue to collapse into the upper airway (back of the mouth, nose and throat) and block breathing. When breathing is interrupted by an obstruction in the airway, the body reacts by waking enough to start breathing again. These arousals may occur hundreds of times each night but do not fully awaken the patient, who remains unaware of the loud snoring, choking and gasping for air that are typically associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea sufferers never get "a good night's sleep" because repeated apneas and arousals deprive patients of REM and deep-stage sleep, leading to chronic

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood. First described in 1965, sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It owes its name to a Greek word, apnea, meaning "want of breath." There are two types of sleep apnea: central and obstructive. Central sleep apnea, which is less common, occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the breathing muscles to initiate respirations. Obstructive sleep apnea is far more common and occurs when air cannot flow into or out of the person's nose or mouth although efforts to breathe continue. In a given night, the number of involuntary breathing pauses or "apneic events" may be as high as 20 to 30 or more per hour. These breathing pauses are almost always accompanied by snoring between apnea episodes, although not everyone who snores has this condition. Sleep apnea can also be characterized by choking sensations. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep often lead to early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness.

S LEEP. The golden chain that ties health and the body together. Thomas Decker (1570-1632 Quality sleep is vital to our health. Sleep problems have now been linked to such devastating consequences as high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, obesity, diabetes, coronary disease, heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, depression, mood swings, attention deficit disorder, memory and cognitive problems, highway crashes, job loss and marital discord. And our sleep quality is increasingly endangered by the fact that Americans live in the most severely sleep-deprived society on earth. These problems with sleep are typically readily treatable. Effective treatment can markedly reduce the risk of the tragic complications listed above. But in most cases, drugs are not the answer and in many cases, they can make the problems worse.
