What is sleep apnea?
People with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night! If you have sleep apnea, the periods of not breathing may make you wake up from deep sleep. If you are waking up all night long, you aren't getting enough rest from your sleep. There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive apnea and central apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnea have this type of apnea. If you have obstructive apnea, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. You keep trying to breathe, but you can't get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of fatty tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles. Central sleep apnea is rare. This type is called central apnea because it is related to the function of the central nervous system. If you have this type of apnea, the muscles you use to breathe don't get the "go-ahead" signal from your brain. Either the brain doesn't send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.

What is sleep apnea?
In some people, the windpipe that brings air into the body is blocked during sleep. This keeps the lungs from getting enough air. This is called obstructive sleep apnea. People who have sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These stops can happen up to 400 times every night. The consequences of these disturbances can be serious and sometimes life-threatening. Return to top
What is a CPAP device?
One way to treat people who have sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. A CPAP device has a mask, tubes and a fan. It uses air pressure to push your tongue forward and open your throat. This allows air to pass through your throat. It reduces snoring and prevents apnea disturbances. You should put your CPAP device on whenever you sleep, even for naps. A CPAP device does not cure sleep apnea. But, when you use the device correctly, your sleep problems should get much better.

Obstructive sleep apnea Alternative names Return to top Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome; Apnea - sleep apnea syndrome Definition Return to top Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by episodes of stopped breathing during sleep. See also sleep disorders Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top In normal conditions, the muscles of the upper part of the throat keep this passage open to allow air to flow into the lungs. These muscles usually relax during sleep, but the passage remains open enough to permit the flow of air. Some individuals have a narrower passage, and during sleep, relaxation of these muscles causes the passage to close, and air cannot get into the lungs. Loud snoring and labored breathing occur. When complete blockage of the airway occurs, air cannot reach the lungs. For reasons that are still unclear, in deep sleep, breathing can stop for a period of time (often more than 10 seconds). These periods of lack of breathing, or apneas, are followed by sudden attempts to breathe. These attempts are accompanied by a change to a lighter stage of sleep. The result is fragmented sleep that is not restful, leading to excessive daytime

Regular consultation with a qualified practitioner is vital for your successful recovery because the breathing exercises are tailored to each individual. I have recently incorporated the discipline of Pilates with my studies of Buteyko and have developed a unique stretch/breathing program. I call this new method, Buteykolates. Treatment For Sleep Apnea
How is Sleep Apnea treated? There is currently no proven drug therapy for sleep apnea. However, there are 4 basic approaches to treatment which are not mutually exclusive: Modification of circumstances which may be causing sleep apnea or making it worse. This would include weight loss, avoidance of alcohol and sedative drugs, trying to sleep only on your side and stopping smoking. It would also help to improve nasal breathing if this problem exists; sometimes this can be done with some simple medication and occasionally it requires an operation. Finally it is important to avoid sleep deprivation. Who should be treated? In most circumstances treatment should be reserved for those patients with particularly troublesome symptoms. What is troublesome for one patient may not be to another so that only general rules can be stated. Sometimes the patient with sleep apnea may not be the best person to decide whether their symptoms are severe or significant. Many patients with sleep apnea have had the problem for several years so they may have lost their proper perception of what a normal night of sleep feels like, or how sleepy during the day they really are. The most important symptom and indeed what often finally brings people to medical attention is daytime sleepiness. Falling asleep at work or school, an inability to concentrate doing normal tasks, unable to watch TV or to read are all common reasons for treatment. Unrefreshing sleep or just always having to fight the urge to sleep are good reasons to treat this disorder. Sometimes it affects someone's mood and personality. If sleepiness affects the ability of anyone to operate a motor vehicle or power machinery then obviously treatment is mandatory.
