Different Types of Masks (Natural) SKIN DISORDERS The skin is subject to various problems - blemishes, infections and growth due to internal or external causes. Some of the skin disorders are Lesion - Change in tissue formation. Papule - A firm raised lesion Pustule - Similar to papule but contains puss. Seborrhea - Excessive secretion of disturbed quantity of sebum is collected upon the skin in the form of oily coating. This is known as seborrhea. Some times a burning sensation is felt White heads - These are caused by pores getting clogged with hardened oil. Here the pores are not open. They therefore show up as tiny white pearly lumps beneath the surface of the skin. They usually form on oily skin. Black heads - In this case the pores are open and clogged sebum is exposed to the air. Oxidation takes place turning it black in colour. Acne - This is one of the most common skin disorders which primarily affects the adolescents as it can be caused by increase of sex hormones which takes place during puberty. This imbalance of sex hormones causes the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum (Sebum is a semi-fluid oily substance which lubricates the skin). The pores of the skin enlarge and get blocked with hardened sebum. This result in black heads and pimples. Some of these develop into pustule which rupture and spread infection. Acne should never be neglected as it causes extensive scarring. Clinical and professional treatment is necessary.

In Brief skin disorders of the foot are common in patients who exercise. skin disorders are among the most common sportsrelated foot problems.

Skin Disorders of the Foot in Active Patients
Craig G. Burkhart, MD, MSPH THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 27 - NO. 2 - FEBRUARY 1999 In Brief: Skin disorders of the foot are common in patients who exercise. Knowing the causes, diagnostic indications, and treatment of seven common skin conditionsfriction blisters, calluses, corns, talon noir, tennis toe, plantar warts, and tinea pediscan help physicians manage these disorders in active patients. E xercise and sports participation enhance physical and psychological well-being, but often involve wear and tear on the feet that can cause pedal aches and pains and injury. Skin disorders are among the most common sports-related foot problems. If managed improperly, conditions such as friction blisters or tinea pedis can impede regular exercise. Physicians who know how to assess and treat common cutaneous conditions of the feet can help minimize discomfort, speed recovery, and prevent recurrence so patients can continue to be active.
Friction Blisters
The skin is well adapted to a wide range of mechanical trauma. However, mechanical irritation such as sudden, intense friction or repetitive rubbing to which the skin has not adapted can cause cell necrosis within the epidermis, leading to a separation of the epidermal layers that fills with fluidthe classic friction blister.

Identifying and Controlling Metabolic Skin Disorders Eczema, Psoriasis, and Exercise-Induced Urticaria Erik S. Adams, MD, PhD Sports Dermatology Series Editor:
William Dexter, MD THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 32 - NO. 8 - AUGUST 2004 In Brief: Inflammatory skin conditions can present obstacles that affect athletic participation. In eczema and psoriasis, cutaneous lesions can lead to skin breakdown, which may disqualify an athlete from participation and may also contribute to secondary infection. Adequate control of chronic skin conditions can, therefore, ensure more consistent athletic participation, and successful treatment may improve social functioning, as well. Clinicians treating athletes who have exercise-induced urticaria should be aware of the need for close observation and continual reassessment to distinguish between cholinergic urticaria and exercise-induced anaphylaxis. T he severity of skin conditions in athletes can range from merely annoying to life-threatening anaphylaxis with cutaneous findings. Clinicians need a working knowledge of commonly seen dermatologic conditions that pertain to exercise, and they must be able to recognize serious conditions when they arise. As with nondermatologic conditions in athletes, goals of evaluation and treatment include accurate diagnosis, recognition of the potential for worsening disease, and safe and successful return to play. Certain metabolic skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and exercise-induced urticaria, may make exercise or sports participation more difficult. These conditions share an inflammatory origin, although their pathophysiologic mechanisms differ.

CANINE SKIN DISORDERS
What to look for, What to do. Diseases of the skin are probably the most frustrating and common conditions for veterinarians to treat. A dogs general physical health and care is often reflected by the condition of its skin and hair coat. Due to this, canine skin diseases are important for owners to recognize, treat and prevent. Many skin diseases are lifelong problems requiring continual or frequent treatments by owners and veterinarians. It is true that every dog will have its day for canine skin disease. Lets begin by defining some terms veterinarians frequently use to describe canine skin diseases. By learning how to speak your veterinarians' "skin language" and how to recognize subtle conditions, you can begin to understand common canine skin diseases and how to treat or prevent them. Some common signs veterinarians look for include:
  • Alopecia: This term means simply the absence of hair. Alopecia can be focal, patchy or generalized in distribution. Certain diseases cause characteristic alopecia patterns.
  • Biopsy: When a small section of a tumor or organ is removed for microscopic analysis.

The following sections serve as an introduction to skin disorders in cats, and suggest where to look to find the cause of a problem.
When your cats begin to scratch continuously, lick and bite at their skin and rub against objects to relieve discomfort, they have an itchy skin disorder, and you must attempt to determine the cause. See ITCHY SKIN DISORDERS There is another group of skin conditions that affect the appearance of the coat and hair. These diseases do not cause your cat much discomfort-at least not at first, Hair Loss is the main sign. It may appear as impaired growth of new hair, or you may notice a patchy loss of hair from specific areas of the body. At times, the coat does not look or feel right and may be greasy or coarse and brittle. To determine the possible cause, see HAIR LOSS DISORDERS When your cat has a painful skin condition and you see pus and other signs of infection on or beneath the skin, this is pyoderma. Some cases are caused by self-mutilation and are late consequences of scratching and biting. Other pyodermas are specific skin diseases that occur by themselves. See

The interpretation of skin disorders remains both a science and an art. It is also a practice that is not exclusive to Dermatologists. All clinicians, regardless their level of training, are challenged to identify a variety of skin disorders on a regular basis. Dermatology is a discipline that can claim both high patient and clinician satisfaction when a skin disorder is properly diagnosed and treated. The following "Skin Disorders" section will hopefully help familiarize you with this task. Our web pages cover some of the more common dermatologic conditions that may be encountered. For each skin disorder, the following are covered: definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, management, as well as visual aids. Website creator: John T. Yu , McGill Medicine, class of 2003 Supervisor: Dr. Beatrice Wang, MD, FRCP, CSPQ
