Reflux Disease May Cause Sinusitis and Damage Teeth
A review of studies by Medical College of Wisconsin physicians suggests that gastric acid refluxed up the esophagus may damage structures other than the esophagus and result in various health conditions including sinus infections and eroded teeth and gums. Reza Shaker, MD Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology (Vol.30s, pp.535-538). There is clear evidence in both healthy as well as GERD patient populations that refluxed gastric acid may come in contact with structures as high as the pharynx. The pharynx is the cavity leading from the mouth and nasal passages ultimately to the esophagus. In GERD patients, the frequency and the contact time of the acid with mucous membranes in the pharynx is much greater. A history of regurgitation in which stomach contents are refluxed into the mouth particularly at night, associated with cough, is a significant clue to the possibility of GERD complications that reach beyond the esophagus. A history of repetitive throat clearing, recurring hoarseness (particularly in the morning), and bad breath may be symptoms of acid reflux-related conditions extending beyond the esophagus. In one study, only 43% of patients suspected of ear/nose/throat complications from GERD had classic symptoms of heartburn, regurgitation, or difficulty swallowing.

Sinusitis
OVERVIEW
You're coughing and sneezing and tired and achy. You think that you might be getting a cold. Later, when the medicines you've been taking to relieve the symptoms of the common cold are not working and you've now got a terrible headache, you finally drag yourself to the doctor. After listening to your history of symptoms, examining your face and forehead, and perhaps doing a sinus X-ray, the doctor says you have sinusitis.
Sinusitis simply means your sinuses are infected or inflamed, but this gives little indication of the misery and pain this condition can cause. Health care experts usually divide sinusitis cases into
  • Acute, which last for 3 weeks or less
  • Chronic, which usually last for 3 to 8 weeks but can continue for months or even years
  • Recurrent, which are several acute attacks within a year
Health care experts estimate that 37 million Americans are affected by sinusitis every year. Health care providers report nearly 32 million cases of chronic sinusitis to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention annually. Americans spend millions of dollars each year for medications that promise relief from their sinus symptoms.

What are the signs of acute sinusitis?
A cold that starts to get better and then gets worse may be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain or pressure in some areas of the face (forehead, cheeks or between the eyes) is often a sign of blocked sinus drainage and can be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain in your forehead that starts when you lean forward can also be a sign. Other symptoms may include a stuffy nose, fever and an ache in your upper teeth. Return to top

Sinus Facts
Have you ever had a cold or allergy attack that wouldn't go away? If so, there's a good chance you actually had sinusitis. Experts estimate that 37 million people are afflicted with sinusitis each year, making it one of the most common health conditions in America. That number may be significantly higher, since the symptoms of bacterial sinusitis often mimic those of colds or allergies, and many sufferers never see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic.
What is Sinusitis?
Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria. It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complications. Normally, mucus collecting in the sinuses drains into the nasal passages. When you have a cold or allergy attack, your sinuses become inflamed and are unable to drain. This can lead to congestion and infection. Diagnosis of acute sinusitis usually is based on a physical examination and a discussion of your symptoms. Your doctor also may use x-rays of your sinuses or obtain a sample of your nasal discharge to test for bacteria.
When Acute Sinusitis Becomes Chronic
When you have frequent sinusitis, or the infection lasts three months or more, it could be chronic sinusitis. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis may be less severe than those of acute; however, untreated chronic sinusitis can cause damage to the sinuses and cheekbones that sometimes requires

Will man lästigen Schnupfen loswerden ?

How Do I Know When My Child Has Sinusitis?
The following symptoms may indicate a sinus infection in your child:
  • thick yellow-green nasal drainage
  • post-nasal drip, sometimes leading to or exhibited as sore throat, cough, bad breath, nausea and/or vomiting
  • headache, usually in children age six or older
  • irritability or fatigue
  • swelling around the eyes
Young children have immature immune systems and are more prone to infections of the nose, sinus, and ears, especially in the first several years of life. These are most frequently caused by viral infections (colds), and they may be aggravated by allergies. However, when your child remains ill beyond the usual week to ten days, a serious sinus infection is likely.
You can reduce the risk of sinus infections for your child by reducing exposure to known environmental allergies and pollutants such as tobacco smoke, reducing his/her time at day care, and treating stomach acid reflux disease.
