Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Overview
  • SIDS is suspected when a previously healthy infant, usually younger than 6 months, is found dead in bed. In most cases, no sign of distress is identifiable. The baby feeds normally prior to being placed in bed to sleep. Then the baby is found in the same position in which he or she was placed at bedtime. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may be initiated at the scene and en route to the hospital, but evidence shows lack of beneficial effect, and the child is later declared dead at the hospital. The cause of death remains unsolved despite a careful review of the medical history, scene investigation, x-rays, and autopsy.
    • SIDS is rare during the first month of life. Risk peaks in infants aged 2-4 months, and then declines.
About 90% of SIDS deaths occur in infants younger than 6 months.

Even though the cause of SIDS remains unknown, scientific efforts have eliminated various misleading theories. We know that SIDS is NOT any of these conditions:
    • Apnea (not breathing): Infants with apnea can be resuscitated. A crib monitor can detect when a SIDS victim stops breathing, but a SIDS victim is already dead when that happens.

News
13 Jan 2001 It appears that there are problems with the Build TuneData routine if you have an old version of SCRRUN.DLL installed. The next version of the full installation package will correct this. In the meantime, you can download a working version on the Files page. Thanks to Vince for working to track this one down.
06 Jan 2001 I have been having horrible problems trying to upload V1.2 to the Files page, so I have had to put the file on a mirror site until I get to the root of the problem. You should now be able to download the file OK. Apologies to anyone who has been trying to get it.
06 Jan 2001 I've had some useful feedback on SIDManager, and a few people have identified bugs. I have managed to track down a few problems, and have added some new features, so the new version is ready to go. The main changes are:
  • Added to RMB menus on the PlayList so that the details of the selected song can be viewed. Added 'Select All' to main menu and PlayList RMB menu. Improved other RMB Menus. Added Double-click functionality to Lists.

    Preventing SIDS Program Description
SIDS can happen anywhere from one month to one year of age. The highest risk period, though, is from two to four months of age. SIDS happens more often with boys than girls. Even after many years of research, no one knows what causes SIDS. There are many theories about the cause, but most experts think SIDS is caused by a combination of several factors. It is impossible to predict with certainty whether a child will succumb to SIDS. However, experts agree that there are a number of things parents can do to decrease the likelihood that a baby will die of SIDS. The links below provide the latest information on safe sleep for infants.

    SIDS Facts Program Description
    Facts about SIDS
    • If an infant is placed to sleep on his or her stomach, the risk for SIDS is increased threefold to ninefold. Most studies have found that infants placed to sleep on their sides are at twofold increased risk compared with those placed on their backs. If an infant is placed to sleep on soft bedding, including blankets, pillows, sofas, and adult bed mattresses, the risk for SIDS increases. The use of a quilt increases the risk of SIDS for infants placed to sleep on their backs. Many infants who have died of SIDS are found with the head or face covered with bedding. The presence of recent viral, respiratory, or gastrointestinal illnesses enhances the risk for an infant placed to sleep on the stomach or for an infant who is over bundled (i.e., covered by more clothes and blankets than necessary for the room temperature). SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies after 1 month of age.
