A nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the prevention of sudden infant death and the promotion of infant health.
http://www.sids.org/
A Message from the Chairman
Marc Peterzell Because of efforts by the Institute and other organizations, the sudden infant death rate is at an all time low. Since 1983, the rate of SIDS has fallen by over 50 percent. Sadly, there are still about 2,500 deaths per year in the United States, and thousands more throughout the world.
We believe that within our lifetime, we can eliminate SIDS as a cause of infant death, but only with the financial and personal support of corporations, foundations and concerned individuals. There are many ways institutions and individuals can contribute to this effort which are available through the Institute's website or through its office. Please join us in this fight. The death of even one more infant is intolerable! Together we can end the tragedy of SIDS. Spring-for-SIDS Day The American SIDS Institute is looking for people to serve as Captains in our Spring-for-SIDS Day - to be held April 8. This national event will raise awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and will raise funds for research. We are asking companies across the country to join us in our fight against SIDS by encouraging their employees to participate in Spring-for-SIDS Day . Each employee who donates $5 will be provided with a Spring-for-SIDS sticker and will be allowed to wear their fun casual spring outfit to work that day.

Heartbeat defect linked to some sudden infant deaths
June 10, 1998
Web posted at: 10:44 p.m. EDT (0244 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) A heartbeat abnormality might be a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome, according to the results of the largest SIDS study conducted. Italian researchers, who studied 34,000 babies over a 19 years, found that an unusual heart rhythm, called a long QT interval, appears to be a contributing cause to the syndrome, in which newborns die for no discernible reason. The results are reported in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Long QT intervals can be easily detected by an electrocardiogram, or EKG. The study found that infants with the defect were 41 times more likely than usual to die of SIDS. A L S O :
Analysis from Mayo Clinic Health Oasis
However, researchers said that while the results of the study are important, they are not enough to support any sweeping recommendation that all newborns be screen with an EKG, which many hospitals are not equipped to do.

New study suggests caffeine-SIDS link
Pregnant women are advised to stop drinking coffee or limit the amount to no more than a cup a day January 27, 1998 Web posted at: 1:19 p.m. EST (1819 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) There may be a link between caffeine intake by pregnant women and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, according to new findings published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. "There's evidence, not great, but evidence that babies who go on to die of SIDS are not normal, even from the very first day of life, which means it's happening sometime prior to that birth," said Dr. Al Steinschneider of the Atlanta-based American SIDS Institute. SIDS is the unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant, whose cause of death remains unexplained after a postmortem investigation. For some time, doctors have advised pregnant women to avoid coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages, because studies have linked them to miscarriages and low birth weights. The SIDS study shows that drinking four or more cups of coffee a day throughout pregnancy almost doubles the chance of SIDS. The findings show that a pregnant mother's high caffeine intake may alter her fetus's respiratory system.

Study: Overheating a factor in infant deaths
By Jonathan Lynch CNN Medical Unit SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) The risk of overheating infants, or thermal stress, has been given relatively little attention in the United States, although it is widely stressed in other countries, researchers said Monday. The number of infants dying of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) could be further reduced by educating the public about the dangers of overheating, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. "What stimulated our interest was a lack of information in the United States press about thermal stress," said Dr. Warren Guntheroth, with the department of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, in Seattle. "It's our feeling that this is one of the most important features of prevention aside from the 'Back to Sleep' program." That program is an educational initiative that's responsible for reducing SIDS deaths by about half. Parents and caregivers are urged to placed all infants to sleep on their backs, rather than their stomachs. Researchers say similar resources should be put into efforts to inform those caring for infants, including nurses, that bundling up a child could be dangerous.
