Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
What is shingles?
Shingles is an infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus is called varicella zoster. You cannot develop shingles unless you have had a previous infection of chickenpox (usually as a child). Shingles is also called herpes zoster. This infection is most common in people over 60 years of age, but young people can have it as well.
How does it occur?
After you recover from chickenpox, the chickenpox virus stays in your body. It moves to the roots of your nerve cells (near the spinal cord) and becomes inactive (dormant). Later, if the virus becomes active again, the symptoms are called shingles. What exactly causes the virus to become active is not known. A weakened immune system seems to allow reactivation of the virus. This may occur with immune-suppressing medicines, with another illness, or after major surgery. It is also seen as a complication of cancer or AIDS. Advancing age and chronic use of cortisone-type drugs may trigger shingles. The virus may also become active again after the skin is injured or sunburned. Emotional stress seems to be a common trigger as well.

167. Online NewsHour: New Shingles Vaccine Could Reduce, Eliminate Virus And Symptoms
MICHAEL OXMAN Well, shingles is a virus infection of nerves and skin So theaverage severity of the shingles in people who got vaccine was reduced.

SHINGLES VACCINE
June 2, 2005
Pharmaceutical company Merck released promising clinical trials Thursday of a new shingles vaccine that has significantly decreased the virus's severity.
RAY SUAREZ: A new study out today in the New England Journal of Medicine found that an experimental vaccine cuts the risk of developing shingles by half. The vaccine was also found to reduce by two-thirds the incidence of chronic pain. The disease is contracted by about one million Americans each year. Here to walk us through the findings and their significance is the leader of the study, Dr. Michael Oxman. He is an infectious disease specialist at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System. And, Dr. Oxman, just so people who haven't been exposed or known someone who is are clear about what we are talking about what it is, what is herpes zoster or shingles? DR. MICHAEL OXMAN: Well, shingles is a virus infection of nerves and skin that's caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, because when you and I had chicken pox, and basically every adult who has grown up in the United States has had chicken pox, the virus didn't go away. It entered the endings of nerves of the skin from the blisters and traveled up the nerves and established a lifelong permanent dormant silent infection in those nerve cells. And it looks as if it's the immunity that we have as a result of having chicken pox that keeps it from waking up.

Gaps in sheathing boards give shingles a little breathing room
July 28, 2005 I need a new roof in my circa 1865 house. I asked the roofer to install a ridge vent, but the roofer said cutting 1 or 2 inches of sheathing boards off on each side of the ridge board (to provide venting space) would weaken the roof structure. Is that so? E.M., Natick No, it will not. While the roof boards (and later, sheets of plywood) added stiffness to the roof rafters, gaps here and there would make absolutely no difference in strength, or at least very, very little. In fact, many old houses had spaced sheathing boards, so that when wood shingles were installed, the gaps allowed the shingles to breathe, and many of those houses still exist, as sturdy as ever, with the spaced sheathing. My plumber cut a 4-inch hole in the wrong place in my bathroom floor. He overlaid the floor with 3/8-inch plywood. Will that span the 4-inch hole adequately? Also: The paint on my siding is standing up nicely but not well on my window casing and sills, where it is peeling badly. How can I correct that? KEN AHERN

Shingles is a skin rash that develops on half of the body, in a belt-like pattern. The rash is usually on either the right or left side of the chest, starting in the middle of the back and wrapping around to the breast but it can occur on any part of the body, such as the forehead and abdomen. Most of the time, shingles is very painful. Sometimes the pain from shingles starts several days before the rash appears. When the pain starts before the skin rash, it can be very hard for doctors to make the correct diagnosis. Many patients have been told they have heart attacks, appendicitis, and migraine headaches before getting the correct diagnosis of shingles. Fortunately, in most cases the pain of shingles gradually disappears over several weeks or months. Most people with shingles will have no pain or just a little pain one year after the rash.

Pain Management
Pain Management Pain relief is an important part of your care. Pain that continues or is not relieved is not good for you. The staff taking care of you will try to relieve or control your pain as much as possible. Just before your operation, the anesthesiologist or the doctor who will put you to sleep will visit you and discuss different anesthesia and pain control methods that can be used. He or she will also help you decide what pain relief method is best for you. During the time soon after the operation, the nurse will often ask how much pain you are having. Unless you are receiving pain medication continuously through an intravenous or by other methods, you can have pain medicine every 3 to 4 hours, depending on how often it is ordered by your doctor. The nurse may offer it regularly, but do not hesitate to call the nurse if you need it. It is important that you let the nurse know if you are having pain before is becomes severe. It is easier to control mild pain. It is harder to reduce or relieve pain once it is severe.

        What is shingles?
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a common viral infection of the nerves, which results in a painful rash of small blisters on an area of skin anywhere on the body. Even after the rash is gone, the pain can continue for months, even years. Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in certain nerves for many years. Herpes zoster is more common in persons with a depressed immune system, and in persons over the age of 50.

"When I asked the doctor, he said I had shingles and told me to continue with the medication."  CNN.com Asia More news from our Asia edition "I also discovered that my penis had become shorter because of all these [medication and treatment process]," he said.
