Exercise As An Aphrodisiac Back to the Sexual Health Center main page Sexual Dysfunctions and Sexual Performance These days, many men and women who grew up believing a satisfying sex life is a birth right are discovering that aging and the stress of modern living can result in a weakened libido or physical problems with sexual performance. In these cases, even the most tried of aphrodisiacs may not work. Fortunately, modern pharmaceuticals have picked up where tradition leaves off. Until recently, medical science regarded sexual dysfunction as a result of psychological or emotional problems. However, most cases of what's now known as erectile dysfunction are acknowledged to be physical in nature and treatable with drugs rather than psychotherapy. Likewise among women, the decline in estrogen levels leading to menopause can dampen desire, reduce vaginal lubrication, and make sex painful as sexual organs atrophy. Testosterone, the sex hormone responsible for driving libido in both men and women, also decreases with age, diminishing desire. While none of this means that sexual dysfunction can't be psychological in nature, it's more the exception than the rule. The introduction of Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction was a revolutionary advancement over the self-administered injections available earlier, with over 16 million prescriptions written since the drug's introduction.

Sexual Dysfunctions
This site covers the following topics:
Female Hypoactive Sexual Desire
Hypoactive sexual desire refers to a deficiency or absence of sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity. Usually, it occurs in adulthood in association with difficulty obtaining sexual arousal or orgasm stressful life events , relationship problems, or psychological distress (especially depression Some evidence suggests that Hurlbert's Combined Treatment is useful in the treatment of female hypoactive sexual desire. While other psychotherapies may be helpful for treatment of female hypoactive sexual desire, they have not been evaluated scientifically in the same way as the treatment listed here. For more information on Female Hypoactive Sexual Desire (Inhibited Sexual Desire), please see Dr. Koop's Medical Encyclopedia Page on Inhibited Sexual Desire . This page provides a more complete definition and information on treatment.
Female Orgasmic Dysfunction
Female orgasmic dysfunction refers to a delay in or inability to achieve orgasm following a normal sexual arousal phase. Since there is wide variability in the type and intensity of stimulation that triggers orgasm, to be diagnosed with female orgasmic dysfunction, the woman's sexual response should be less than what would be considered reasonable for her age, sexual experience, and the adequacy of sexual stimulation she receives. Female orgasmic dysfunction commonly affects body image, self-esteem, and relationship satisfaction.

Female Sexual Dysfunction
An Often Under Managed Problem Sexuality is a complex process and behavior. It is coordinated not only by various systems of our bodies such as the endocrine, nervous, vascular and others. It is also related to personal experience, social, cultural beliefs, and changes with age. Sexuality is also much affected by interpersonal relationships or lack thereof. Each partner brings different needs and response to the sexual relationship. Any disturbance in any of these areas can potentially lead to sexual dysfunction. There are four areas of Female Sexual Dysfunction desire, arousal, orgasmic, and pain disorders. They frequently overlap and need to be ascertained properly. Many medical conditions are a source of direct or indirect sexual problems. Diabetes, incontinence, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and mood disorders are just some the conditions that may disturb normal sexuality. Medications such as antidepressants and antihypertensives can suppress sexual desire. Gynecologic conditions can also contribute to sexual difficulties. For example, chronic recurrent bladder infection can diminish desire. Chronic vaginal or cervical infections can make sexual intercourse less desirable. Normal progression through menopause can also exhibit vaginal dryness and decreased libido. Psychological conditions from past sexual molestation and rape can create physical problems. Current relationship problems can also dampen desire and arousal.
