81. Sex Addiction
sexual addiction is not sexual desire. sexual addiction is defined not by thetype of sexual act performed or even by the frequency of sexual activity.

Sex Addiction What is it?
The Symptoms
It is thought that sex is used by the addict as an escape, a means of avoiding stress, emotional strain, boredom, anxiety, and the pursuant shame and isolation that results from their compulsive behavior. Sex may be used to feel powerful or desirable. Sexual addiction is often accompanied by other addictions, such as an addiction to work or chemicals. The addict displays increasingly secretive behavior, deception, and withdrawal from those closest to him. Consequences
Living with a Sex Addict
For a coworker of a sex addict, the situation is quite different, as it is often one of sexual harassment. Sex addiction or straight up sexism, it does not really matter what his reasons are. What matters are his actions. If a woman experiences unwanted touching or other physical contact, unwanted sexual jokes or comments, sexual advances, or exposure to pornography from a coworker the first step is to say no clearly. If the behavior continues she should document all of her work, and document all of her interactions with the harasser. This can include sending him a memo that asks him to stop his behavior and making a copy for her own file. If there is no one within the organization to speak with there a number of organizations a woman can contact for legal and emotional support.

Free From Sexual Addiction
By Steve Gallagher, as told to Bob Davies
I degenerated into a steady diet of hard-core porno movies. Conviction ate at me like a cancer, But I couldn't quit. I gripped the phone harder, hardly believing it was my wife at the other end.
"I don't love you, Steve," she said coldly. "I'm with another man and I'm not coming back." "Fine," I jeered. "Then you can listen to me blow my brains out." I pulled out my off-duty revolver, spun the cylinder around and clicked it in place, right next to the earpiece. Then I pointed it at my head. "Don't do it, Steve," I heard her yell. I hesitated, then put down the gun. Somehow, it didn't really seem to matter whether I lived or died. Life seemed so meaningless. I think my problems started when I was small. My dad was an alcoholic and he emotionally abused me. "You're never going to amount to anything," he'd often say to me. I was crushed. My mother was a sweet Christian woman who took me to church. But as I got older, I began to hate it and refused to go anymore. I craved attention and did all kinds of daring things, just to get people to notice me. I started taking drugs at 14, and became totally rebellious against authority-especially teachers and cops.

S ex was his fix, his high. It was the one thing he thought he could control until the addiction began to overtake him and lure him into a destructive cycle that would consume his life. He is a recovering sex addict. He's been in and out of therapy, strip clubs, psychiatric offices, massage parlours and sexual addiction support groups for more than 20 years. "I really felt disgusted with myself, filled with self-hatred and loathing and not liking what I was doing and yet finding it difficult to stop," says Bob, who does not want to reveal his true name. Bob's addiction started when he was 18 years old. Masturbation, Playboy magazines and soft-core pornography might be considered a typical activity for a teenage boy exploring his own sexuality, but for Bob it was like playing with fire and it only fuelled his budding addiction. It was the suicide of Bob's mother, however, that precipitated his decline into the world of prostitutes, massage parlours, pornography and sex in public washrooms. Bob lost control and despite the guilt, shame and disgust, his sexual addiction began to take over his life.

Early in childhood we learned not to trust. Many of us share a common history of some type of childhood abuse. We were yelled at, put down, laughed at, criticized, and told we were worthless or stupid or ugly, or responsible for everything wrong in our family. Today we recognize this as emotional abuse. We were neglected, ignored, minimized or overlooked. Today we call this emotional abandonment. We were slapped, punched, hit, beaten, knocked down, or struck with objects. Today we know this to be physical abuse. Lastly, we were touched, leered at, pawed, told sexually lewd or explicit jokes, and coerced or forced into sexual activities. Today we call this sexual abuse. Whatever abuses we suffered we learned that to survive we had to find a way to not feel the overwhelming and unbearable pain. Instinctively we built walls around our hearts. At first the walls served merely to protect us from another abuse, but later we found ourselves prisoners in our self-made fortresses. Being cut-off from ourselves and from others we were also cut-off from connection with God. Our spiritual death was as real as our emotional poverty. Sex was the one thing that seemed to restore us to life. Like water to a dying man in the desert our lust served to seemingly bring life back to our aching hearts. The truth is that the lust was just another wall of our fortress. Lust is a magical wall in that it gives the illusion of connection. It is transparent. We can see people on the other side and we can pretend that we are connecting with them, laughing, joking, living, sharing, but all the while there is this wall which deadens their voices so we can barely hear a sound, and distorts their faces ever so slightly - or greatly - and absolutely ensures that they will never harm us because they can not touch us. So we feel safe, but we remain alone inside our prison.

1. Have you subscribed to sexually explicit magazines like Playboy or Penthouse?
(This question assumes that an interest in seeing naked women, or people having sex is a bad thing. Some people simply enjoy nude photos and reading articles about sex and without any negative effects.)
2. Do you often find yourself preoccupied with sexual thoughts?

How I Broke My Sexual Addiction It has been brought to my attention that this testimony focuses on religion. My hope is that everyone will find benefit from my story, however, the focus of this testimony is on Christians struggling with pornography. I have written this to share with others who are experiencing the same struggles as I have gone through. I believe that anyone can experience the same benefits that I have, but Christians struggling with pornography will be able to identify with my spiritual struggles as well as the battle to overcome pornography. Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I ask you to forgive my sins. I give you my sins, failures and lifestyle and by faith I receive your righteousness into my life. I open the door of my heart and invite you in. Please be my Lord and my Savior and I will serve you with my life. Amen. If you said this prayer or if you want to give me any feedback, feel free to contact me. I keep all emails confidential with the exception of flaming, insulting messages. For everyone else, all messages are confidential and I have follow up material that you may benefit from. I also have a prayer list for those who have contacted me as well. Sometimes, not always, sexual addiction and infidelity go hand and hand. Learn six ways in which sexual addiction is expressed through extramarital affairs.
By Dr. Robert Huizenga, 7/3/2005
Click for enlarged image. One kind of extramarital affair revolves around sexual addiction. The partner involved in the affair, plain and simple, has a difficult time saying "NO." He/she may want to, but feels compelled to say "yes."
People can’t say no? Well, I believe we all have the capacity, at some level, to say no. However, not all have developed that capacity or reached that level to firmly say no and mean it.
Some are "stuck" and seem to lack the ability to consistently act on the "no." Please remember that all of us are "grabbed" by something and find it difficult to let go. Infidelity when connected to sexual addiction and its many forms, however, becomes a powerful focal point.
How to know if infidelity is attached to sexual addiction:
1. Sex takes on an inflated role or value. Sex, sexual conquest, sexual release becomes a powerful force. Acting on the sexual impulse is a frequent activity. Thinking about sex likewise consumes an inordinate amount of time. Multiple ways of acting out sexually (porn, strip clubs, multiple sex partners, etc.) are common.

Discover some pointed questions one should ask him/herself when considering leaving a marriage where adultery and sexual addiction are problematic.
By Dr. Robert Huizenga, 7/4/2005
Click for enlarged image. I outline 7 kinds of affairs in my E-book, "Break Free From the Affair." One affair, "I Can't Say NO!" is characterized by addictive tendencies. Infidelity (as well as pornography, strip clubs, online chatting, compulsive masturbation, etc.) may be a part of the sexual addiction.
Often the spouse or partner of a sexually addicted person intuitively knows of the addiction and the struggle his/her partner has with the behavior.
The partner often "feels for" his/her partner and is in a great quandary about staying in the marriage or leaving the marriage.
If you are a person facing this dilemma or know of someone who is, here are some pointed questions to help move more quickly through the decision making process:
1. Do you really want to save the marriage or are you just plain worn out? Does it seem that it would be much easier to just put up and tolerate the crazy kind of behavior you bump into with him? Are you emotionally fried and think of confronting him with your feelings and thoughts of ending the marriage as jumping into more emotional turmoil?

Is Internet addiction real? More research is being conducted to explore the way people useand misusethe Internet. BY TORI DeANGELIS If you believe what you read, "Internet addiction" is about to make us a nation of derelicts. Men drooling over online pornography, women abandoning their husbands for chat-room lovers and people losing their life savings on gambling Web sites are just a few of the stories peddled in today's press. But despite the topic's prominence, published studies on Internet addiction are scarce. Most are surveys, marred by self-selecting samples and no control groups. The rest are theoretical papers that speculate on the philosophical aspects of Internet addiction but provide no data. Meanwhile, many psychologists even doubt that addiction is the right term to describe what happens to people when they spend too much time online. "It seems misleading to characterize behaviors as 'addictions' on the basis that people say they do too much of them," says Sara Kiesler, PhD, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University and co-author of one of the only controlled studies on Internet usage, published in the September 1998 American Psychologist. "No research has yet established that there is a disorder of Internet addiction that is separable from problems such as loneliness or problem gambling, or that a pa ssion for using the Internet is long-lasting."

Addictions The hallmark of Sierra Tucson 's treatment is its unique ability to look at the whole person and treat patients effectively. Unlike other treatment methods in which a patient is labeled according to a particular diagnostic criterion such as alcohol dependency, Sierra Tucson works with each patient to identify and resolve the unique core issues that underlie presenting problems, as well as address the patient's destructive life behaviors. Alcohol/Chemical Dependency The basis for treatment of alcohol and other chemical dependencies, as well as other disorders, stems from the Sierra Model . This model integrates philosophies and practices from the medical, psychological, therapeutic and self-help communities, and family systems theory. The 12-Step philosophy is foundational to our program. Our ability to address the needs of a broader range of patients is brought about by incorporating psychiatric, medical, and emerging alternative therapies. The result is a powerful treatment experience. Our whole-person approach to treatment looks at all aspects of each individual.
The primary group is the central component of the treatment experience. Patients undergo an individualized treatment program, which may include disease and recovery education, relapse prevention, 12-Step meetings, Equine-Assisted Therapy, Adventure Therapy, and Grief and Spirituality sessions. Specialty groups focus on specific areas of concern, such as eating disorders, compulsive behaviors, nicotine cessation, cocaine and heroin addiction, depression, and anxiety disorders.
