Don't Call it Love
This book sheds light into the many dark places where sex addiction is home. The fact that it was written from compilation of surveys from 1000 sex addicts in recovery, gives it unique credibility, many helpful insights and advise. It describes and offers advice for early recovery, a year into recovery, later in recovery. It tells what they felt were the difficult barriers, what worked and what didn't. This could be extremely valuable to those considering or starting recovery, or returning to recovery after an absence. Knowledge in this book is comforting. There is plenty of hope for those of us who need this. - Reader review. What is Sexual Addiction?

Michael Johnson Ph.D In his article he states: " A behavior becomes an addiction when the addict can't stop despite negative consequences, mood alteration occurs, the addict is in denial, the behavior is chronic and escalating, and withdrawal symptoms appear when the behavior is stopped. The Genesis of Our Addiction Our lust started as an overpowering desire for pleasurable relief from inner pain, emptiness or insecurity, with which we could not cope. At first, it worked. For a time, sex with ourselves or with others dissolved the tension, relieved the depression, resolved the conflict, and provided the means to deal with, or escape from, seemingly unbearable life situations. Eventually, our quest for relief became an addiction, and the addiction took on a life of its own. Pleasure and relief were gradually replaced with tension, depression, rage, guilt, and even physical distress. To relieve this new pain, we resorted to more sex and lust, losing more control in the process. We were driven to spend more time thinking about and carrying out our addiction, and lived in denial to avoid recognizing how much of our life our addiction controlled. Finally, our addiction came to take priority over everything: our ability to work, live in the real world, relate with others and be close to God. What started as the cure had become the sickness. The Answer had become the Problem. We were hopelessly addicted to lust.

WHO ARE WE?
We are a Christian Group of former sex addicts (homosexuals, heterosexuals, bisexuals, lesbians, adulterers, fornicators, masturbators, sex offenders, porn addicts, cybersex addicts, and all sexually immoral) who have come to terms with our brokenness and our inability to change through our own methods; but, only through the great power of The Father, The Son (Jesus Christ) and The Holy Spirit, is change made possible in our lives. We are committed to the Lord Jesus Christ and stand firmly on the belief that He loves all sinners, and that by His Blood that was sacrificed on the Cross at Calvary, our sins were paid for in full. Through allowing the Lord Jesus Christ to come into our hearts and trusting in Him as our Savior, He will always be with us through all trials and tribulations by providing us a way out. It is through God's only Son, Jesus Christ, we are all saved

The Problem for Women
Why? We were running; running from love; running from pain; pain from shame, self-hate, and multiple forms of abuse. We lacked self worth and feared intimacy. We tried to connect; we tried to escape. We felt abandoned. We had a need to be in control and have power over others. Spiritually, we were bankrupt. We have learned to numb our feelings and to cope with our inadequacies by reaching out for a cure that would ultimately destroy us. This in effect defined our belief system in a way that was not in line with God's plan for sexuality. Sexual addiction is progressive. What starts as a little flirtation or a "curiosity", the line we chose to cross, set us into motion for the next line we chose to cross. Ask the adulterer, ask the prostitute, ask the slave to the Internet, "when, how they started, and how it ended." We tell ourselves that the next sexual act will be better and more lasting, but it never is. Eventually, our behaviors resulted in losing relationships, our marriages, jobs, and material possessions and in some cases, our children. For many, the risks of sexual transmitted diseases (STD) are now a reality. And finally, we hit a bottom.

Cycle of Sexual Addiction
Sexual behaviors that are compulsive and continue despite serious consequences are usually a sign of sexual addiction. Like other addicts, sex addicts engage in distorted thinking; rationalizing, defending and justifying their behavior while blaming others for resulting problems. They deny having a problem and make excuses for their behavior. Sex addicts usually participate compulsively in more than one type of sexual behavior... ie: compulsive masturbation, viewing pornography and patronizing prostitutes. Although some sex addicts are hypersexual, most are not. For the addict who has affairs, the thrill of the chase and conquest rather than the sexual experience itself may be the source of excitement. Like other addictions, the sex addicts report progression of their disease; ie: taking increasingly greater risks or trying new sexual behaviors to maintain the same euphoric effect. Sex addicts tend to sexualize other people and situations, finding sexual connotations in the most ordinary incident or remark.

www.ejhs.org Sex Addiction: A Dangerous Clinical Concept
Marty Klein, Ph.D From the keynote panel presentation at the AASECT annual meeting, May 2, 2002.
There is a question that we, as professionals, have all been devoting thousands and thousands and thousands of hours to: How can we conceptualize and evaluate, and diagnose and treat, if necessary, sexual behavior? And how do we do this in a sex-positive way? That's the question that our profession has been looking at since its inception. It's the question I was told I needed to look at when I first entered the field how can we do our work in a sex-positive way? How can we maintain a model of sexual health that is sex-positive? The media are not our ally in this, the government is not our ally in this, even professions like medicine and psychology are not our allies in this. And yet we are devoted to this quest. Some people say that we are foolish for even trying to do this.
So I think it only makes sense that we should use sexological tools to examine why it is so difficult to do this. Let's use our own tools to look at our own questions. The sex addiction movement focuses on important issues, and those issues deserve sexological attention. Here are some of the things that the sex addiction movement has been looking at since the mid-80s: Questions of lust and desire, the relationship of love and sex, decision-making and impulse control, guilt and shame, and brain chemistry. Pat, I didn't know how much you were going to talk about that today, but that is yet another thing that the sex addiction movement is talking about. These are important questions, and they deserve our attention.

Answer More questions and answers More on This Subject Sexuality Human sexuality is a precious gift designed for a man and woman within the context of marriage. Indeed, God provided us with the potential for such intense pleasure in order to create a powerful bond between husbands and wives. But sex has been distorted by a culture that often removes it from the bonds of marriage and cheapens it by assuring us that "anything goes . . . as long as no one gets hurt." The consequences of devaluing this gift have led to painful consequences for individuals, families and society as a whole. Sexual addiction
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The neutrality of this article is disputed
Please see discussion on the talk page Sexual addiction is an alleged form of addiction to sexual intercourse and other sexual behavior According to proponents of this concept, sexual addiction is in many ways similars to other addictions, where the activity comes to be used as a way to manage mood or stress and may become more severe with time. The DSM does not presently define sexual addiction as a condition, but some therapists believe that it can be defined in a similar way to other conditions. Diagnostic criteria have been suggested, that are closely analogous to those the DSM provides for other addictions. However, others are doubtful as to whether sexual addiction exists, or whether the term itself is a useful or meaningful concept for describing human sexual behavior. According to proponents of the sexual addiction concept, the prevalence of sexual addiction is not accurately known, in part because addicts are secretive. However, it is claimed to be commonly seen in combination with other addictions as well as mood and stress disorders. Sexual addiction has in the past been considered a largely male problem, but more recent work suggests it is also prevalent in women, although usually manifesting in different ways.

Table of Contents Archives of past issues Editorial Board Subscriptions ... Advertising Sexual Addiction By Lynn Phillips The Nature of Addiction GPSolo, The two brain centers involved in addiction are the more primitive midbrain (or limbic system) and the more evolved frontal cortex. The midbrain is home to the pleasure/reward center and is in charge of survival; its only concerns are those that ensure the organism will live and produce offspring. The frontal cortex is home to reason, judgment, morality, and other higher-level functions. In the brains of addicts, the midbrain mutes, shuts down, or otherwise impairs the frontal cortex. Without the frontal cortex to restrain it, the midbrain takes over. What Is Sexual Addiction? So how does something as innate as sex become an addiction? And what is a sexual addiction anyhow? A sexual addiction is a compulsive dependence on any sexual behavior that preoccupies the addict, who continues to act compulsively as the consequences mount and who experiences the compulsion as beyond his or her ability to resist, control, or stop it. As the addiction develops, the addict needs to engage in more frequent or riskier behaviors to produce the same biochemical rush. The actual act may differ from addict to addict; the preoccupation, persistence, and compulsive need to continue do not.

A CLOSER LOOK at SEX and LOVE ADDICTIONS
by Coralie Scherer, Ph.D. and Al Cooper, Ph.D.M
Josh will tell you: He just likes sex! Through high school and college he kept track of the "notches on his belt" but a few decades later the women are just a hazy stream of one night stands. He loves the chase and sometimes even feels pleasure. But when the sex is over he is gone. He tells himself he's quite a stud but a voice inside asks how long he can keep this up. He swears he's going to stay home and relax tonight but the loneliness gets to him and finally, he decides he will "check out the action" at his favorite bar one more time. Trina just met the "man of her dreams" a few weeks ago. She invited him to stay with her when his wife threw him out. She's so happy giving him what he needs domestically, financially, and sexually, especially when it's something his wife wouldn't do. She loves knowing that she understands his better than anyone else. That is why she is going to surprise him by taking him out to dinner for his birthday and wear the kind of very revealing dress he really likes. Normally she wears more conservative clothes because she is uncomfortable being the center of attention. But making him happy is what counts. She leaves work early to swing by his office and give him a ride so he won't have to take the bus. She's thinking about placing an ad to give away her precious Siamese because he has hinted that he doesn't like cats.

Ed Young The Winning Walk What is an addiction? I agree with one definition that an addiction is an illicit appetite that demands to be satisfied...but once it is satisfied it doesn't rest. Sexual addiction includes things like homosexuality, incest, voyeurism, sex with prostitutes, viewing pornography (which is rampant now through the internet), cyber-sex (which is an on-line sexual act simulated now through computers), telephone sex (which today is a 100 billion dollar business), pedophilia...and the list just seems to go on and on. As I travel the country, it is clear that an incredible number of people are living lives of sexual addiction - and they are paying such a high price.
