Recovery from Sex Addiction
Hello! My name is David Bissette and I am a clinical psychologist in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. This site explains sex addiction and how to recover from it. There is a wealth of information here for those who suffer from this problem, as well as family and friends. Of course, reading materials such as theseand even doing the exercises and worksheets included herearen't a substitute for face-to-face professional help or for attendance at 12-step meetings for sex addiction. However, they can do a lot to provide a basic understanding about sex addiction and to help someone get started in recovery and make progress. This includes family members who need to heal from the effects that sex addiction has had on their family. The material that follows is part of a larger site about my general practice . There's plenty of material about other psychological problems that you may want to explore also. Most people with sex addiction suffer from depression, and it is not unusual to find signs of Attention Deficit Disorder. In addition, childhood abuse is frequent in the backgrounds of those who have any addiction, especially one involving sex. Sex addiction does not develop in a vacuum. Welcome to HealthyMind.com! An adventure in growth and understanding awaits you.

13. What Is Sexual Addiction?
Some thoughts about Sex Addiction from Sex Addicts Anonymous.
http://www.saa-recovery.org/addict.htm
What is Sexual Addiction? Sex Addiction can involve a wide variety of practices. Sometimes an addict has trouble with just one unwanted behavior, sometimes with many. A large number of sex addicts say their unhealthy use of sex has been a progressive process. It may have started with an addiction to masturbation, pornography (either printed or electronic), or a relationship, but over the years progressed to increasingly dangerous behaviors. The essence of all addiction is the addicts' experience of powerlessness over a compulsive behavior, resulting in their lives becoming unmanageable. The addict is out of control and experiences tremendous shame, pain and self-loathing. The addict may wish to stop - yet repeatedly fails to do so. The unmanageability of addicts' lives can be seen in the consequences they suffer: losing relationships, difficulties with work, arrests, financial troubles, a loss of interest in things not sexual, low self-esteem and despair. Sexual preoccupation takes up tremendous amounts of energy. As this increases for the sex addict, a pattern of behavior (or rituals) follows, which usually leads to acting out (for some it is flirting, searching the net for pornography, or driving to the park.) When the acting out happens, there is a denial of feelings usually followed by despair and shame or a feeling of hopelessness and confusion.
