AND WHY THESE BOOKMARKS?
Peg Duncan writes: I have two young sons, one with language learning disability and both with ADHD. Like many parents, I didn't realize until they were in school that they had difficulties, and from that point scrambled to find information. The library at the local office of the Learning Disabilities Association was a great source of information. So, it turned out, was the Internet
I started gathering bookmarks in 1995 and have accumulated links to many interesting and helpful resources, including a lot of information related to my job and outside interests - history, biography and current events. During a panel discussion in 2000 at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa, on the topic of "Learner in Difficulty", I blithely offered to share my bookmarks! Aggressive pruning has resulted in this list.

Semantic-pragmatic disorders
Semantic refers to the meanings of words and phrases. Pragmatic refers to the use of language in a social context (knowing what to say and when and how to say it to other people). Children with semantic difficulties struggle to understand the meaning of sentences or words. Words which refer to abstract concepts such as feelings (sad, puzzled, jealous) or status (important, official) can be especially hard for these children to understand. They misinterpret and take literally phrases such as "Cut it out!", "Stop it" or "He's a push-over". Often it can be difficult for children with a semantic disorder to work out the topic or key information in a sentence. Children with pragmatic difficulties struggle to use language socially.

Disorder
S emantic - P ragmatic D isorder (High Functioning Autism)
A Language Disorder first introduced by Rapin and Allen in 1983, which describes a group of children who
present mild Autistic features and specific semantic pragmatic language and communication impairments. SPD
is separated into two groups: receptive and expressive language. Mainly characterized by poor conversational skills with inappropriate use of language. Receptive language becomes difficult because comprehension of words is unclear. Validity of semantic-pragmatic as a developmental language disorder or as a distinct from of high-functioning autism has been questioned since its introduction. Given the similarities between semantic-pragmatic syndrome and autism. For example, three major characteristics are, a cognitive deficit, poor social skills and utilization of non-verbal communication. They also share the same specific characteristics within the autism spectrum. Definition of Semantic Pragmatic Semantic - Memory for the meaning of words, interpretation behind a word.

Scientists baffled as autism cases soar Games Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder Semantic-pragmatic disorder is very similar to Asperger Syndrome and a common characteristic of people with non-verbal learning disabilities and hyperlexia. The condition involves deficits in social and nonverbal communication such as the give and take of communication as well as interpreting cues from body language and expression. While Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder itself is almost always milder than Asperger's, the vast majority of people with Asperger Syndrome have pragmatic language deficits and could benefit from the techniques for dealing with this disorder. Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder may be a variant PDD or it may be just a descriptive term for the language impairment in autistic spectrum disorders.
