Project Description Parents of children with selective mutism will access the online survey via a link on various established websites that support parents of children with disabilities. Parents will share personal information about themselves and their children diagnosed with selective mutism. Data will be analyzed to identify the decision-making process of parents in selecting treatment for their children with selective mutism. This study will be published in the library at The University of Texas at Austin.
Project Abstract The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of the decision-making process that parents use in selecting treatments for their children with Selective Mutism. This combination qualitative and quantitative study will utilize the use of an online survey to collect data. Through purposeful and snowball sampling, parents of children diagnosed with selective mutism will participate in an online survey to share information about themselves and their children with selective mutsim. Qualitative response data will be analyzed using a constant comparative method (Goetz and LeCompte, 1984). Quantitative data will be analyzed in SPSS. Results from this study will inform parents, educators, and medical professionals.

How we successfully treated our daughter's selective mutism
August 2003 Re: Social phobia: selective mutism. There were a few times when I saw postings from the parents of the children who have Selective mutism, and finally decided to share my experience with this disorder. My daughter was diagnosed with it after she didn't speak in her preschool for 1 1/2 years, and after she stopped speaking even to her grandparents (with whom she spoke before). When she was 4 1/2 she spoke only with her parents, and only if there was nobody around. That is when we realized that she is not just shy and quiet, but there is something else going on. So I called behavioral therapy in Kaiser, got appointment right away, and my daughter got a diagnose Selective Mutism. To tell the truth I was shocked that my little beatifull daughter was diagnosed with a disorder from psychiatric text book. Now I understand that we were very lucky to know it when she was so young and didn't start school yet. Later you start harder it is to help the child.

A Family and Genetic Study of selective mutism selective mutism is notofficially considered an anxiety disorder by DSMIV diagnostic classification

A Family and Genetic Study of Selective Mutism:
Relationship to Social Anxiety Disorder and Serotonin Genes This SM research study is a collaboration between SMG~CAN , Dr Elisa Shipon-Blum and The University of California, San Diego ( Dr. Murray Stein)
Study Objectives:
The objective of this study is to interview families in order to confirm that social anxiety disorder segregates within families of Selectively Mute children. A secondary objective is to determine the genetic make-up of parents, siblings, and the SM child in terms of an association with specific genes, such as the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) genes and subtypes which has been linked to anxiety disorders. Findings from this study will improve our understanding of the hereditary nature of Selective Mutism, it's relationship to DSM-IV anxiety disorders, and it's possible neurobiological association.
Study Design:
50 families with SM children will participate in this study. Dr. Shipon-Blum will evaluate and either diagnose or confirm a previous diagnosis of SM to screen for the interview portion of the study. Upon acceptance into this study, if each SM family would TRY to provide us with another family (without SM) to serve as a control for the study.

It was over ten years ago when I first heard of Selective Mutism. I was a newly hired public school Speech-Language Pathologist. Fresh from graduate school, I took my position as a Communication Disorders Specialist very seriously. It is only with the experience of time (or is it age) that I can be humbled to now admit that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. It is with this frame of mind that I’d like to share with you what I have learned, but to do that, I have to also share with you my mistakes. The old adage, we learn from our mistakes could not be more true. Donnie* was a boy on the Physical Therapist’s caseload. He was entering third grade, and at one of our weekly team meetings, we discussed what needed to be done for his three year re-evaluation. There were some concerns from his teacher that he didn’t seem to understand language as well as his peers. “How is his expressive language?” I asked. “Well, we don’t really know since Donnie doesn’t talk to us”. “Well, he does talk to me”, said Tammi, the PT. The gears in my mind were working—“you mean, he won’t talk to anyone else, except you? What is that, mutism? Or rather, elective mutism?” (I thought I had coined a new term! Little did I know that it was actually the name for the disorder! (It is now referred to as Selective Mutism)). Well, the discussion went on, and it was agreed that I would evaluate Donnie’s receptive language using tests that require only pointing as a response.
