In babies, it is called "cradle cap." Seborrheic dermatitis can affect the skin on other parts of the body, such as the face and chest, and the creases of the arms, legs, and groin. Introduction Seborrheic dermatitis is a common superficial infection of the skin occurring in 1 to 3% of immunocompetent adults. The lesions of seborrheic dermatitis can vary in appearance. Characteristically, they present as patches of red, flaking, greasy skin, particularly on lipid-rich areas of the skin such as the scalp, nasolabial folds, ears, eyebrows, and chest. However, the degree of erythema, amount of flaking, and the extent to which the affected areas have a greasy appearance can vary between patients. Seborrheic dermatitis tends to make its first appearance around the time of puberty, when the amount of skin lipids increases. It is common in adolescents and young adults, but less prevalent in the middle aged (1). In patients over the age of 50 years, seborrheic dermatitis again has a higher prevalence (2). Seborrheic dermatitis affects both sexes, but is more common in males. This chronic condition tends to be more prevalent and often more severe in the dry winter months than in the summer.

Also called dyssebacia pityriasis alba seborrheic dermatosis Wikipedia Seborrhoeic dermatitis Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face and trunk causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. It particularly affects the sebum -gland rich areas of skin. It is thought to be caused by a fungal infection caused by the yeast Pityrosporum ovale in individuals with decreased immunity and increased sebum production. The recommended treatment is ketoconazole creams and/or shampoos. Topical steroids should be reserved for acute flare-ups only as they may precipitate recurrences and dependence. Shampoos containing zinc, or selenium may also help.

Rosacea also involves a vascular component causing flushing and broken blood vessels. Seborrheic Dermatitis It does not usually involve red bumps as in Rosacea. Just to confuse things further, the two conditions are often seen together.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition typically affecting particularly oily areas of the skin. The scalp, face, ears, or trunk may be involved. Mild cases may range from simple dandruff to involvement of the periorbital areas about the eyebrows, nasal alae, and periauricular area, as well as the EAC. Lesions may be mildly erythematous and slightly raised with a greasy scale. They may be pink or orange in color and demonstrate thickening of the plaques and lichenification if chronic. Malassezia furfur , a lipophilic yeast, is thought to play at least some role in the development of this condition. Treatment consists of topical steroids and keratolytics, as well as medicated shampoos for scalp involvement. Excerpt from UTMB Otolaryngology Grand Rounds
