Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is marked by symptoms of depression profound enough to seriously affect work and relationships. The disorder may have its onset in adolescence or early adulthood and, like other forms of depression, occurs more frequently in women than in men. Most people with the "winter blahs" or "cabin fever" do not have SAD. The cause of SAD is not known but is thought to be related to numerous factors such as body temperature, hormone regulation, and ambient light. There is a rare form that occurs in the summer. This disorder was identified and publicized in 1993 by Dr. Norman Rosenthal, Director of Seasonal Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health. Researchers estimate that approximately 17% of people living in the upper latitudes suffer periodic bouts of the winter blues. People who meet full diagnostic criteria for SAD in northern climes is estimated at 8%. Only 2% appear to suffer from SAD in the Sun Belt and those individuals probably avoid going outdoors. Women suffer from SAD three to four times more frequently than do men.

    Seasonal Affective Disorder
What is seasonal affective disorder? Seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD) is a kind of depression that follows the seasons. The most common type of SAD is called winter depression. It usually begins in late fall or early winter and goes away by summer. A less common type of SAD, known as summer depression, begins in the late spring or early summer. SAD may be related to changes in the amount of daylight we get. Do many people get SAD? About 4 to 6 percent of people may have winter depression. Another 10 to 20 percent may have mild SAD. SAD is four times more common in women than in men. Although some children and teenagers get SAD, it usually doesn't start in people younger than age 20. Your chance of getting SAD goes down as you get older. SAD is also more common the farther north you go. For example, it's seven times more common in Washington state than in Florida.

Gila Lindsley, Ph.D., A.C.P. Celebrating the Thanksgiving festival begins our final descent down to the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. As the last of the leaves fall from the trees and the sun sinks lower and lower on the horizon the spirits of some sink with it; and as the days grow shorter and shorter, shorter too grows the memory of sunshine and warmth. With the New England overcast sky above, the blustery winds and the trees now barren of leaves, how difficult it is for many to keep the inner fires burning. Many become SAD. That is, many may develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Surely not everyone succumbs to the blahs or the blues in wintertime. The vigor, joy and pleasure of winter skiers; the surge of energy and increased appetites many people feel once the summer's heat has lifted; these surely speak to the happiness and pleasure winter brings for some.

    D. Murstein, M.D.
January 30, 2002 SAD is a type of seasonal depression, usually occurring in the winter, which affects millions of people a year between September and April with the peak occurring in the winter months of December, January, and February. True SAD is a seriously disabling illness, preventing people from functioning normally. In addition, millions of others suffer from a milder version called "subsyndromal SAD" or "winter blues," less disabling but still impairing and uncomfortable. There is a more rare form of summer SAD in which symptoms occur in the summer and remit in the winter.
    Contents
    Diagnosis
    • Recurrent major depressive episodes that start around the same time each year (e.g. September-October) and remit around the same time each year (e.g. March-April). Full remission of symptoms during the unaffected periods of the year (e.g. May-August), otherwise the diagnosis of major depression may be more accurate. Over the lifetime course of the illness there are relatively more seasonal depressive episodes than non-seasonal episodes.

When weather affects us to such an extent that we begin to have trouble functioning as usual, however, this can become more than just a case of the "winter blahs," according to the CMHA.
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a type of clinical depression that appears at certain times of the year. It usually starts with the shortening days of late autumn and lasts through the winter. However, the term "winter blues" can be misleading; some people have a rarer form of SAD which is summer depression. This condition usually begins in late spring or early summer.
Since the days of winter get shorter the further north you go, SAD has been found to be more common in northern countries. In Canada, about 2 to 3% of the general population will experience SAD in their lifetime. Another 15% of Canadians will experience a milder form of SAD where they simply have the "winter blues."

The Light Therapy Centre In a trial of PMS sufferers using the lightmask, 76% of women noted a reduction in their symptoms, to the point where most of them no longer suffered from PMS In a study of 50 migraine headaches, 49 were rated by the patients as being "helped" and 36 as being "stopped" by using a lightmask. The attacks shortened in all cases. It is lightmask users themselves who have convinced us that pulsed light therapy is a valuable treatment for insomnia, with many falling asleep before the session ends. For the treatment of Migraine, PMS, Insomnia and other sleep disorders try the Rio Lightmask. For the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or Winter Depression try the Rio SAD Lamp. For the treatment and prevention of Cold sores try the Rio Virulite. What is Light Therapy?
