Scurvy Dogs TPB: Rags To Riches (2005)
Just released into a trade collection is Andrew Boyd and Ryan Yount’s knee-slappingly funny Scurvy Dogs series. Published by AiT/PlanetLar , this trade collects all 5 issues of the series (good for careless readers like me who somehow missed the fifth issue) with an extensive DVD-like creators' commentary track. I have no excuse for not having posted about this series before. It’s funny at a head-spinning pace. If I had to write my own entry I’d say something along the lines of this book being the comic lovechild of two funny guys who complement each other perfectly. And I’d tell potential readers that the gag-a-panel humor is premised on pirate jokes in a pop culture setting. But rather than write up my own lengthy entry, I can think of no more appropriate tribute to a fine pirate comic than to pirate a review. So, without further ado, but with extensive apologies and promises never to do anything like this again is my review of Scurvy Dogs taken from 13 web sources, none of which gets more than one sentence in my pirated mix:

Eight Decades of Scurvy.
The Case History of a Misleading
Dietary Hypothesis.
Irwin Stone. PC-A
1 1321 Charmwood Square, San Jose, California 95117
This paper was originally prepared for presentation at the Conference On controversies In Human And Clinical Nutrition, Boston University School of Medicine, Hyannis, Massachusetts. July 16, 1978 and also presented at the Annual Meeting of the Orthomolecular Medical Society, September 17, 1978, San Diego, California. This paper will discuss the history of scurvy in this country over the past eight decades and try to explain how a potentially-fatal and insidious genetic disease of such wide incidence in our population could become an unrecognized, phantom disease, to which most present day doctors pay little or no attention and are unconcerned. It will also discuss the widely accepted dietary theory which has been applied by nutritionists attempting to solve this problem in medical genetics. The author believes that the wide acceptance of this misleading dietary hypothesis is the source of the medical complacency and apathy and the dangerous continuing high incidence of Chronic Subclinical Scurvy.
[The History of Scurvy]
Let us take a look at the sequence of historical events in scurvy of the past 80 years and try to see what went wrong and what finally went right: The first notable date in this century is 1907 which records the first important scientific advance in our knowledge of scurvy beyond what was known to Dr. Lind in 1753. Holst and Frohlich (1907) stumbled accidentally upon this important evidence while they were investigating ship beriberi which was causing problems in the Norwegian Fishing Fleet.

Welcome to our humble abode, cyberpirates. This port is operated mainly by the motley crew of the Good Ship Nenriki. They welcome all their fellow pirates, and hope this humble service may be of some use to them, including (as it does) a brief history of pirates, guides on how to spot fellow pirates, and a tavern at which pirates can gather and converse. Landlubbers are vaguely welcome, so long as they don't get into any mischief. Pirates are awesome. Here's why:

    Cause of Scurvy
Scurvy is caused due to a deficiency of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) . This vitamin is found in many fresh fruits and vegetables . It is important in the formation of collagen, which constitutes normal tissues. Without it, normal tissue synthesis cannot take place.
    Symptoms of Scurvy
The symptoms associated with scurvy are very noticeable. They start off by being signs of weakness and aching joints and muscles, and weakening of capillaries which then progresses to bleeding of the gums and other spontaneous haemorrhage, loosening of the teeth, anemia, drying-up of the skin and hair and general debility. It leads to the formation of livid spots on the skin. These spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs. A person victimized by this disease looks pale, feels depressed and can be partially immobilized. Severe phases of this disorder can cause death. Infants with scurvy have their bone development interfered with, because of the lack of the vitamin. The most common symptoms are:
    • Weakness black-and-blue marks on the skin joint pain gum disease corkscrew hairs
    Treatment of Scurvy
If scurvy is left untreated, it will result in death.

Vitamin C to the Rescue As Scurvy Breaks Out in the Mountains Sinister evidence that the long period of famine in Afghanistan has left its mark on victims emerged last week in unexplained deaths from infections in several provinces. These have worried local doctors and UN health teams from the World Health Organisation (WHO). 40 people were reported to have fallen ill and died quickly in Ghor province in the mountainous centre of Afghanistan. One theory is that these deaths are the result of infections that have gained a foothold in a population whose immune systems have been weakened by lack of food and particularly a lack of vitamin C rich fresh food. Relief workers have noticed outbreaks of scurvy in the population - a malady specifically caused by a lack of the vitamin which normally occurs in fresh fruit and vegetables. Scurvy, leaves sufferers particularly vulnerable to secondary infections, say WHO. To help combat this the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has commenced distribution of more than 250,000 doses of vitamin C in the affected districts. Another 7.75 million doses - a month's supply for the affected population - are on their way.

    Scurvy
SCURVY, ( scorbul This disease was formerly very prevalent among seamen, but now little known in the British navy, from the improvements in medicine, the great attention of our medical officers, and the wholesome regulations introduced by the naval officers in our ships war. A proposition has been submitted to the French government by Citizen Rivoire, of the marine, to contribute to the health of their seamen, by diminishing the quantity of salted meats used at sea, and rescuing the men in a certain degree from the ravages of the scurvy. The government had so far given sanction to the plan, which the inventor asserts to be tried efficacy, as to insert it in the official paper, the Redacteur , of the 10th of August, 1799. "Salted meats," says Citizen Rivoire, "form the general food of persons at sea, and, however carefully they may be prepared, the use of them is at all times pernicious. When vessels are a long time at sea without putting into any port, the scurvy is found to rage among the crews, and in a manner the more dangerous, as the means of cure are slow and uncertain. The following is the, process which Citizen Rivoire employed, which he says is the result of many experiments, with which he had every reason to be satisfied: "It will be necessary in the naval slaughter-houses, to select the most fleshy parts; the four quarters, for instance, of the beeves which are killed for their daily consumption, which of course must then be doubled. The muscles being cleared of the surrounding fat, are to be cut in large slices perpendicularly, according to the direction of the fibres. These slices are to be exposed to the heat of the ovens in which the bread and biscuit are baked for the use of the navy, when they are at the heat of fifty degrees by the thermometer of Reaumur, and to remain there until the ovens be cold: and opening should be left for the evaporation of the moisture.
