    Definition
Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Signs of scurvy include tiredness, muscle weakness, joint and muscle aches, a rash on the legs, and bleeding gums. In the past, scurvy was common among sailors and other people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time. Description
Scurvy is very rare in countries where fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and where processed foods have vitamin C added. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant vitamin involved in the development of connective tissues, lipid and vitamin metabolism, biosynthesis of neurotransmitters, immune function, and wound healing. It is found in fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, and in green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach. In adults, it may take several months of vitamin C deficiency before symptoms of scurvy develop. Currently, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 50-60 mg/day for adults; 35 mg/day for infants; 40-45 mg/day for children 1-14; 70 mg/day during pregnancy ; and 90-95 mg/day during lactation . The body's need for vitamin C increases when a person is under stress , smoking, or taking certain medications.

    The Stanford Speech:
    Eradicating Heart Disease
On May 4, 2002, Matthias Rath, M.D. world renowned scientist and physician gave a landmark scientific presentation at Stanford Medical School in Palo Alto, California, on the possibility to eradicate cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Rath is the scientist who discovered the close connection between cardiovascular disease and the sailor's disease scurvy: The common denominator of both health conditions is the instability of the blood vessel wall due to impaired supply of micronutrients to millions of cells of the vascular wall.
10 years after Dr. Rath had first published his landmark discovery it is recognized as the key discovery towards the control of cardiovascular disease. The invitation of Stanford University for Dr. Rath reflects the fact that the world's leading medical institutions can no longer ignore this medical breakthrough.

Scurvy does not occur in most animals because they can synthesize their own vitamin C, but humans, other primates, guinea pigs, and a few other species lack an enzyme necessary for such synthesis and must obtain vitamin C through their diet. Vitamin C is widespread in plant tissues, with particularly high concentrations occurring in citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits); tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, and green peppers are also good sources of this vitamin. Scurvy results in the weakening of capillaries, which causes hemorrhages into the tissues, bleeding of the gums, loosening of the teeth, anemia, and general debility. In infants there is also interference with bone development. Severe phases of the disorder can result in death. Scurvy is treated with large doses of vitamin C. Modern methods of transporting and preserving foods have made a diet rich in vitamin C available everywhere throughout the year, and even infants' diets include orange juice. Vitamin C is also available in tablet or syrup form.

Welcome to the Program Stories and Interviews Frontierwatch Ask an Antarctican ... About Big Dead Place Scurvy Awareness Program "...after eating a hearty breakfast of salt beef, I found myself taken with a pain under my left breast, where I had formerly received a dangerous blow. From this time the sea scurvy increased upon me..." -William Hutchinson, 1794 At recent Employee Orientations, Raytheon Human Resources representatives made the startling boast that in 2002, reported employee injuries in Antarctica reached an all-time low. Even a graph was flaunted to show that in 2001 a line representing worker injuries moved downward upon the arrival of the x-axis notch marking the 2002 fiscal year. What the Human Resources representatives overlooked in order to maintain their encouraging numbers was that 2002 was the year Raytheon, with the oversight of the National Science Foundation, paid employees not to report injuries. During the winter of 2002, each employee was paid an extra $50 for each month that their department reported no injuries. In the minds of number-crunchers with ergonomic office chairs, the $50 was an incentive to encourage safe work habits. But to bloody-knuckled grunts with work-sprained wrists or smashed fingers, seeking medical treatment now came with the added bonus of owing co-workers their money’s worth in cases of beer, to ward off the murderous stares. A mob of mechanics deprived of their rightful dough is not an enemy to be aggravated for need of a band-aid. Do cash incentives create a safer industrial environment? Or do they merely pit the hungry herd against the injured gazelle? Do cash incentives breed careful workers? Or do they breed a ruthless corps of opponents eager for new fishing rods? Do injuries decrease as reported injuries decrease? Or do dollars quietly bury the blood?

The name given to a set of symptoms that develop during a severe long-term shortage of vitamin C, scurvy is rare these days. But make no mistake: At one time, scurvy was a plague of epic proportions. In fact, one expert maintains that after famine, scurvy is "probably the nutritional deficiency disease that has caused the most suffering in recorded history." Source of Sailors' Suffering Once called the scourge of the navy, scurvy killed or incapacitated countless sailors during the age of naval exploration. Often long sea voyages, even aboard grand sailing ships led by legendary explorers such as Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco da Gama, literally became death trips for the crew. In fact, da Gama lost 100 of 160 men to scurvy during one ten-month voyage.

scurvy is a simple program that allows the user to visualize and manipulate B-spline curves in space. It was written as a teaching aid for Stanford's 1995 course in modeling in computer graphics (CS 348C) The provided executable executes only on Silicon Graphics workstations equipped with the execution-only-environment (eoe) of Open Inventor (the development environment is not required). For those interested in porting scurvy to other platforms, the source code is also available in tar archive format; use tar xf scurvy.tar to unpack the archive. This source code was developed on a Silicon Graphics workstation equipped with the Open Inventor development environment. A Linux port bleffler@kth.se We provide no support for scurvy
    Basic interaction
A typical screen of scurvy shows a B-spline curve. The curve is drawn in two colors, cyan and orange: these two colors alternate between adjacent spline segments. Each spline segment is drawn by approximating the shape of the ideal curve by as many line segments as specified by the "Pieces" slider. The colored spheres mark the de Boor points of the curve. The color of the spheres indicates the order of the de Boor points: the first point is blue, and the last is red, while intermediate ones have colors in-between blue and red. The white polyline connecting the spheres is the control polygon of the curve; along with the spheres' coloring, it identifies the ordering of the de Boor points.

    Scurvy
    What is scurvy?
Scurvy is a condition characterized by general weakness, anaemia, gingivitis (gum disease), and skin haemorrhages caused by a prolonged deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the diet. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in the formation of collagen, a major component of connective tissue. Connective tissue has structural and supportive functions which are indispensable to blood vessels and all tissues within the body. Vitamin C is also important in the proper functioning of the immune system, iron absorption, cholesterol metabolism and other biological activities. Thus scurvy has widespread effects.
    Who gets scurvy?
Scurvy was often seen in sailors on long ocean voyages described from the 15th century onwards. Many men died from the disease until it was discovered that scurvy could be effectively cured and prevented by consuming vitamin C through lemons, oranges and limes. The nickname for British sailors of “limey” derives from the practice of giving British sailors limes. It is thought that scurvy occurs very rarely in modern societies of today as most people have access to year-round fresh fruits and vegetables which are rich sources of vitamin C. However, several groups of people are at risk. These include:

Much to my delight, the hoarde of pipe tobacco I squirreled away some 5 or 6 years ago was properly stowed. It shall prove to be a mighty bounty. And just in time for the fall smoking season.
Speaking of fall seasons, football begins tomorrow with what could become quite a football game putting into service the hopefully revitalized Oakland Raiders against the now ever-morphing Lombardi Trophy machine Patriots. The Patriots have been struggling a bit against the run in their defense and may swith to a 4-3 if their 3-4 continues to break down. I'm sure Bilichick has something clever planned. That being said, I want to see the Raiders come out of the gate and smoke the Patties. Our defense is a bit sketchy, but showed some promise in the preseason.

This leaves the body unable to maintain enough of the protein collagen needed to maintain the health of connective tissue, bones and dentin within teeth. Details With the loss of collagen, victims of scurvy suffer general weakness, joint pain, anemia, gum disease (gingivitis) and skin hemorrhages. The literature of voyaging abounds with detailed and terrifying descriptions of scurvy such as that penned by William Clowes, in his Profitable and Necessary Book of Observations. In the eighteenth century, scurvy was understood in terms of the theories of the bodily economy propounded by Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738). In line with Boerhaave's mechanical model of the body, scurvy was seen as being due to blood serum being too thin and acrid - this state being caused by damp and cold climate and foul vapours. In the eighteenth century, the term scurvy was often used to describe other nutritional deficiencies, such as beri-beri, in which patients manifested similar symptoms. The imprecision in diagnosis was observed by eighteenth-century surgeon and medical theorist, James Lind. Traditionally, Europeans had cultivated plants of the Cruciferea or Brassicaceae (mustards). Three plants were especially as anti-scorbutics:
