Surgery for scoliosis is only recommended for patients with curves that are greater than 40 to 45 degrees and continuing to progress, and for most patients with curves that are greater than 50 degrees. The main objective of scoliosis surgery is to fuse the spine so that the curve will not continue to progress into adulthood.

"Secrets to Back and Neck Problems Exposed..." "More than likely if you've been told by a Medical Doctor...or been to a Chiropractor repeatedly for years..." As we look for some fancy way to convince you chiropractic works and we are different than about 97% of all other chiropractors, I just have to wonder, why?  Why do we have to do this? Why is it people are so skeptical?  I have decided.  It really doesn't matter why So, I challenge you!   What do you have to lose?  We are an up front clinic.  If you want help, we are willing to help.  If you want a quick fix, go somewhere else.  We deliver the promise of chiropractic by correcting the cause of your problem Skim our pages.  Pay close attention to the Scoliosis and Rhino Spine Center pages.  They really tell you what we are all about.  They spell out what we do and how we do it.  Normal everyday pain and poor posture is NOT NORMAL and you don't have to live that way.  We use treatments you may have not seen before because we are involved in research.  Someday these procedures will be as common as plastic and Lasik surgery.  The only question is will you have waited needlessly in pain for years waiting on everyone else or been the first.  You can only get these procedures in very few clinics.  There are only two in Michigan. Why wait... Basically, for $37 (or less if covered by insurance) you will get to learn if your spine has the correct shape, if your disc are healthy, are you ligaments working, and does your body have the appropriate range of motion and function.  All these based on American Medical Association Guidelines.

http://www.medhelp.org/lib/scoilio.htm
What is Scoliosis? And How is it Treated? Everyone's spine has curves. These curves produce the normal rounding of the shoulder and the sway of the lower back. A spine with scoliosis has abnormal curves with a rotational deformity. This means that the spine turns on its axis like a corkscrew. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine which may have its onset in infancy but is most frequently seen in adolescence. It is more common in females by a 2:1 ratio. However, when curves in excess of 30 degrees are evaluated, females are more frequently affected by a ration of approximately 8-10:1. The cause of the most common form of scoliosis idiopathic scoliosis is unknown, but there are certainly hereditary factors that are present. Scoliosis causes shoulder, trunk and waistline asymmetry. In mild forms, the condition may be barely noticed; whereas in severe forms there is significant disfigurement, back pain and postural

69. The Scoliosis Tree - Welcome
Tells of one girl's experiences, explores treatment options, and identifies potential problems with both bracing and operation treatments.
http://www.erikamaude.com/scoliosis.htm
Home My Story UK Clinic Rehabilitation ... Email Home Welcome Updates Welcome This area of my website started because 6 years ago, when I was diagnosed with Scoliosis, my mother spent hours looking on the Internet in the hope of finding information and possible treatment methods. However, there was not much information available, only a multitude of horrendous accounts that did more harm than good and just sent her into a frenzy of worrying. So really my purpose in creating this area is to reassure people of all ages that Scoliosis is not such a horrible thing, just something one comes to terms and learns to live with. I am sure most people go through the initial stage of 'why me?' - I know I certainly did, however what I didn't know and find out until later was that Scoliosis is quite an ordinary problem and that I wasn't one of the only people to be affected by it, just one of many in the world. I feel, looking back, that had I had someone to talk with and discuss things then I would have fared much better. Nevertheless I coped and learned lots, including the realization of how lucky I am to only have Scoliosis. In fact I am still learning and discovering new things about Scoliosis and the treatments associated with it. My main interest is in alternative treatments, although I do like to keep an open mind, so I have included information regarding more conventional treatments as well.

yes no When idiopathic curvature occurs at or shortly after birth (infantile curves), the ratio is reversed and boys are often slightly more affected than girls. Interestingly, adolescent curve tends to be more convex to the right whereas infantile ones are to the left. In babies early diagnosis and treatment is particularly important. Scoliosis may also develop as a result of congenital malformations of the spine such as hemi-vertebra or fused vertebrae, or in association with spina bifida Scoliosis may develop as the result of neurological disease for example poliomyelitis or Friedreich's Ataxia . It may also occur in brittle bone disease , or in specific syndromes such as Marfan Rett syndrome and Neurofibromatosis Inheritance patterns
There is evidence that idiopathic scoliosis is familial. Where the cause of scoliosis is specific, the pattern of inheritance will depend upon the disorder concerned. Prenatal diagnosis
None, except where specific conditions are concerned: for example, in spina bifida where amniocentesis at 16 weeks is used. Ultrasound scanning can also identify spinal cord and vertebral defects.

Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities:
A Guide for Patients If you or a member of your family has a spinal deformity you probably have questions and concerns. The doctors and nurses in the Children's Hospital Spinal Deformities Program have prepared this booklet to help answer your questions. In it we describe spinal deformities and explain both non-operative and surgical treatment. Your orthopaedic surgeon and nurse are ready to answer your questions and to help you understand your particular spinal abnormality and treatment. This booklet is not meant to substitute for discussions with the doctor or nurse. No question is too simple to ask. Please write down any additional questions you have and bring them when you come for your next appointment. We welcome your questions. What is the spine? The spine is made up of many individual bones called vertebrae, joined together by muscles and ligaments. Flat, soft intervertebral discs separate and cushion each vertebra from the next. Because the vertebrae are separate, the spine is flexible and can bend. Together the vertebrae, discs, muscles, and ligaments make up the vertebral column or spine. Different regions of the spine are named differently. The cervical spine refers to the neck, the thoracic spine to the chest, and the lumbar and sacral spines to the low back. What are normal spinal curves?
