The word scoliosis refers to a curve in the spine. You may know someone with scoliosis read our article for kids to find out more about this condition.
http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/bone/scolio.html
KidsHealth Kids Kids' Health Problems
Your spine, or backbone, helps hold your body upright. Without it, you couldn't walk, run, or play sports . If you look at yourself sideways in the mirror or look at a friend from the side, you'll notice that the back isn't flat like a piece of board. Instead, it curves in and out between your neck and lower back. Despite that gentle curve, a healthy spine appears to run straight down the middle of the back. The trouble for someone with scoliosis is that the spine curves from side to side in a "C" or "S" shape or is twisted. What Is Scoliosis?
The word scoliosis (say: sko-lee- oh -sus) comes from a Greek word meaning crooked. If you have scoliosis, you're not alone. About three out of every 100 people have some form of scoliosis, though for many people it's not much of a problem. For a small number of people, the curve gets worse as they grow and they may need a brace or an operation to correct it. Someone with scoliosis may have a back that curves like an "S" or a "C." This type of curve may be noticeable to others and can be uncomfortable. See the X-ray image to get an idea of what scoliosis looks like. No one knows what causes the most common type of scoliosis called idiopathic (say: ih-dee-uh- pa -thik) scoliosis . (Idiopathic is a fancy word for unknown.) Doctors do know that scoliosis can run in families. So if a parent, sister, or brother had scoliosis, you might have it, too. About the same number of girls and boys have scoliosis, but girls are more likely to need treatment.

Every person's spine curves. A certain amount of curvature is necessary for people to balance, move, and walk properly. But three people out of 100 have a condition that causes the spine to curve too much in the wrong direction. This condition is called scoliosis (pronounced sko-lee- o -sus). The name comes from the Greek word "skoliosis," which means curvature. What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is sort of a medical mystery - no one knows what causes the most common form of scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis Idiopathic is a medical term that means it's not known what caused the condition or disease.) The condition can be hereditary, so a person who has scoliosis may have family members who have it. Girls are much more prone to developing severe cases of spinal curvature than boys are: Teenage girls over the age of 9 are five times more likely to be diagnosed with the condition than boys of the same age. Many times, a person with scoliosis has been developing the condition since childhood. But because scoliosis can develop very gradually, in most cases it isn't diagnosed until a person is between the ages of 10 and 14. In scoliosis, the spine becomes abnormally curved from side to side into an "S" shape. When the curve gets severe, it can be visible and cause discomfort. If the curve gets really severe, it can even affect a person's breathing and heart function and can lead to damage in the joints of the spine and pain in adulthood. How Is Scoliosis Diagnosed?

Scoliosis Overview
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. In scoliosis, the spine curves to the side when viewed from the front, and each vertebra also twists on the next one in a corkscrew fashion. Our spine is an engineering marvel that supports our weight and ties our body together. The spinal column consists of a stack of small bones that range in size from 2-3 inches to 5-6 inches in diameter. When viewed from the front, the spine appears to be straight, but when looked at from the side, the normal spine has 2 gentle s-curves. Scoliosis affects girls twice as often as it affects boys. About 3-5 of 1,000 people are affected. Scoliosis usually occurs in those older than 10 years, but the condition can be seen in infants. Scoliosis is a lateral (sideways) curving of the spine. How can you tell if I have scoliosis?
It is often first noticed because one shoulder or one hip is higher than the other. Your ribs may stick out more on one side. X-rays will show if your spine is curved and where the curve is. At what age does scoliosis develop?
It is usually noticed between the ages of 10 and 14 in girls and 12 and 14 in boys. Is this a rare condition?
No. Although you may not know anyone with scoliosis, one in every ten persons has some degree of curving of the spine. What causes scoliosis? Why did I get it?
We do not know what causes it in 80 percent of the cases. We do know that it runs in families, so your brothers and sisters should be checked, and, in the future, any children you might have should be checked for scoliosis, too. Will I have back pain?

What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curve of the spine (backbone). Normally, the spine is straight. With scoliosis, the spine is crooked and curves to the side. If the spine is very crooked, the ribs or hips may stick out more on one side than the other side. Also, one shoulder may be lower than the other. Scoliosis may begin in childhood but often is not noticed until the teenage years. In most cases, the exact cause of scoliosis isn't known. It seems to run in some families. Scoliosis is more common in girls than in boys. Return to top
How can I tell if my child has scoliosis?
Look at your child's spine to see if it curves or if it is straight. Also check to see if one shoulder is lower than the other. Many public schools check for scoliosis in the 5 th or 6 th grade. Your doctor may also examine your child for scoliosis at a regular check-up. Your doctor may be able to tell if your child has scoliosis just by looking at your child's back when it is in different positions. Your doctor may have your child stand and bend over to touch the toes. Sometimes x-rays help show the curve in the spine.

Main Diseases and Conditions
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine . In most cases, the scoliosis is idiopathic (80% of cases), meaning that it is not known what has caused the curvature to occur. It is not caused by having poor posture or carrying a heavy book bag and in most cases, if detected early, it can be treated and does not cause any permanent problems or disabilities. Related Articles Back to School Survey School Performance Problems ADHD Internet Links About Pediatrics Seven Sleep-Smart Tips for Teens Back to School Center Adolescents are the most common age group to have idiopathic scoliosis, and it usually begins between the ages of 10 and 14. While it occurs about equally in both boys and girls, girls are much more likely to have a progression of the curve that requires treatment. Still, only about 10% of children with scoliosis require corrective treatment (bracing or surgery). The rest (90%) will not require treatment and will have no long lasting effects or symptoms from the curve. Idiopathic scoliosis can also much less commonly be found in young infants (

The idiopathic form in adolescents is the most common and may have a genetic predisposition. Most cases occur in girls and curves generally worsen during growth spurts. There are also infantile and juvenile forms that are less common and affect a similar number of boys and girls. Scoliosis may be suspected when one shoulder appears to be higher than the other, or the pelvis appears to be tilted. It is often unnoticeable to an untrained observer, however.

Patients should return for additional treatments if needed within 5-10 days from their last Bowen Session.
Other forms of treatment given 4 days before or up to five days after a Bowen session may interfere with its effectiveness.
Bowen does not interfere with the effectiveness of any other therapies or orthodox medical prescribed medicines.
Bowen is safe to use on anyone from neonates to the elderly.

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine, the presence of which is abnormal. We know that as early as 500 years BC Hippocrates was writing about it, and its name is derived from the Greek word for curvature. It can be disfiguring because when the spine bends to the side, the vertebrae (the individual bones that make up the spine) become twisted and pull the ribs round with them, which sometimes form a "bulge" on the back and cause the shoulder blade to stick out. The causes of scoliosis are many, and although we well understand the consequences, the origins of this condition remain complex and obscure. There are two main types of scoliosis—namely, idiopathic (no known cause) and syndromic (the curvature is part of a recognised disease pattern, such as Marfan's syndrome). Idiopathic scoliosis accounts for most spinal curvatures and they may either be of early onset , before age seven years, or late onset , after that age and usually in adolescence. There is a definite genetic connection, with around 25% of those with a scoliosis have a direct relative with a curvature. 80% of adolescence idiopathic scoliosis arises in girls, and 80% of these girls have their rib prominence on the right side. The spine can bend towards either side of the body at any place, in the chest area (thoracic scoliosis), in the lower part of the back (lumbar), or above and below these areas (thoracolumbar). It can even bend twice, causing an S-shaped curve. When the curve is S-shaped (double curvature) it is often not noticeable and the person can appear quite straight because the two curves counteract each other. If the curve is low down in the spine, the ribs will not be affected but one hip may be higher than the other.

Overview
When my doctor pointed out that I was at high risk for osteopenia because of my history of scoliosis and my thin build, I started reading everything I could about osteopenia and osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Out of the many books I looked at that are currently available on the subjects, the books reviewed below are the ones I found the most helpful. In the book Food and Our Bones the author focuses on osteoporosis, but she also also discusses bone health and bone density in general. The book Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis is also intended for people with osteoporosis, but since it covers a variety of bone density treatment factors such as diet, exercise programs, magnesium, calcium, vitamin K, vitamin D and zinc, it should also be valuable reading for people with any bone-related health condition such as osteopenia (a precursor condition to osteoporosis), osteomalacia and rickets.
