Overview of helpful sciatica exercises
First, it is important to explain what sciatica is, as the term sciatica is often misused and its definition often misunderstood. Sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than a diagnosis in itself (meaning it does not explain the cause of the pain). Sciatica is a general term that refers to pain caused by compression or irritation of one or more nerves exiting the lower spine that make up the sciatic nerve, and there are a number of different conditions that can cause this. The medical term for sciatica is a radiculopathy, which means that a spinal disc has extended beyond its normal position and is irritating the radicular nerve (nerve root), which connects with the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve branches off as it travels down the lower extremity through the back of the leg, and thus pain can be experienced along this route.

Sciatica
Sciatica is the term given to pain down the leg, which is caused by irritation of the main nerve into the leg, the sciatic nerve . This pain tends to be caused where the nerves pass through and emerge from the lower bones of the spine (lumbar vertebrae). Much of the advice regarding this condition is the same as that for low back pain
Symptoms
In sciatica, there is a pain down into the leg, which travels below the knee, and may involve the foot. There may be numbness and there may be weakness of the lower leg muscles. These symptoms may come on their own, but are often combined with low back pain . The order in which the symptoms appear may vary. Sometimes the back pain comes before the sciatica, and sometimes will follow.
Red Flags
As with low back pain, there is a group of features (the Red Flags ) which doctors use to highlight the need to act more quickly, because they may suggest a problem which is not as straightforward as simple back pain or sciatica. If you fit into one of these groups or are concerned, you should see your doctor soon:
  • You are younger than 20 or older than 55 when you get the problem for the first time.

Sciatica Overview
Sciatica (pronounced sigh-AT-ih-ka) is low back pain combined with a pain through the buttock and down one leg. The pain usually goes past the knee and may go farther to the foot. Sometimes, weakness in the leg muscles occurs with sciatica.
  • The sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body and are about the size of your little finger. They come out of the spinal column low in the back and then go behind the hip joint, down the buttock, and down the back of the leg to the foot.
Sciatica is different from other forms of low back pain because there are 2 sciatic nerves, and the pain is usually on 1 side.
The pain is usually a shooting pain, like electricity. It can also burn like fire or tingle much like the feeling when your leg "goes to sleep." The pain can range from slightly annoying to totally unbearable. Some people have pain in one part of the leg and numbness in another part of the same leg.

It occurs when there is damage to the sciatic nerve, located in the back of the leg. This nerve controls the muscles of the back of the knee and lower leg and provides sensation to the back of the thigh, part of the lower leg and the sole of the foot. Sciatica patients may not benefit from bed rest, study says
RELATED VIDEO CNN's Holly Firfer reports on research that takes a new look at sciatic nerve pain
Windows Media
February 10, 1999
Web posted at: 9:41 p.m. EST (0241 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Holly Firfer BOSTON (CNN) Those who have experienced sciatic nerve pain know that it can be excruciating and often debilitating, and doctors usually recommend a few days to a few weeks of bed rest to treat this fairly common injury. But now, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine finds saying in bed for weeks may be a waste of time. Treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs coupled with a decrease in activity may be just as effective, researchers say. The sciatic nerve is actually a cluster of nerves that run from the lower back in the buttock area down the back of the leg.
