People who have schizophrenia do NOT have multiple personalities. The behaviorof people with schizophrenia is often very strange and shocking.
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/schiz.html
Schizophrenia First, let's discuss what schizophrenia is not. People who have schizophrenia do NOT have multiple personalities. In 1911, Eugen Bleuler, first used the word "schizophrenia." Although the word schizophrenia does come from the Greek words meaning "split" and "mind," people with schizophrenia do not have split personalities. This misunderstanding has caused many people to misuse the term schizophrenia. The "split mind" refers to the way that people with schizophrenia are split off from reality; they cannot tell what is real and what is not real. Contents of this Page

Who has schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is one of the most common mental illnesses. About 1 of every 100 people (1% of the population) is affected by schizophrenia. This disorder is found throughout the world and in all races and cultures. Schizophrenia affects men and women in equal numbers, although on average, men appear to develop schizophrenia earlier than women. Generally, men show the first signs of schizophrenia in their mid 20s and women show the first signs in their late 20s. Schizophrenia has a tremendous cost to society, estimated at $32.5 billion per year in the US (statistic from Brain Facts , Society for Neuroscience, 2002).

Learning Points
  • Schizophrenia mainly affects thought and behaviour, as opposed to affect. It is often a chronic disorder in that there are multiple acute episodes and between these residual effects. The diagnosis of schizophrenia is usually made with the help of a longitudinal view of the patient i.e. the form of the illness is as important as the content of the illness in making a diagnosis.
Clinical Features
Concepts of what schizophrenia actually is change with time. Different names and different criteria have been used to make the diagnosis at different times. This may be because the disease itself changes with time, or because we are actually analysing a phenomenon with several different causes that all present a common picture i.e. of disturbances of thought and behaviour. Prior to this century patients with General Paralysis of the Insane (GPI) caused by Treponema pallidum were classed in with schizophrenic-like patients. It may be that what we term schizophrenia today is a heterogenous disease with different causes.

Nicotine studied as treatment for brain disorders
By Carey Goldberg, Globe Staff, 11/12/2003 Scientists reported yesterday that nicotine seems to diminish mental impairment stemming from stress or an underactive thyroid the latest in a growing body of evidence that the long vilified substance may help people with brain disorders ranging from Alzheimer's disease to schizophrenia. ADVERTISEMENT Nicotine researchers caution that the findings by no means offset the health ravages of smoking. But for years, a growing number of them have been exploring the aid nicotine may offer people with dementia, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and more. "Yesterday's poison can be today's therapy," said Dr. Jerry J. Buccafusco, a pharmacologist and researcher at the Medical College of Georgia. Pharmaceutical researchers are racing to synthesize drugs that could offer the benefits of nicotine without its negative side effects, such as addiction and narrowed blood vessels.

    What You Need to Know
Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. Someone with schizophrenia may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; may be unresponsive or withdrawn; and may have difficulty expressing normal emotions in social situations. Contrary to public perception, schizophrenia is not split personality or multiple personality.  The vast majority of people with schizophrenia are not violent and do not pose a danger to others.  Schizophrenia is not caused by childhood experiences, poor parenting or lack of willpower, nor are the symptoms identical for each person. What causes schizophrenia The cause of schizophrenia is still unclear. Some theories about the cause of this disease include: genetics (heredity), biology (the imbalance in the brain’s chemistry); and/or possible viral infections and immune disorders.  Genetics (Heredity).

    Schizophrenia in Children
    What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a medical illness that causes strange thinking, abnormal feelings, and unusual behavior. It is an uncommon psychiatric illness in children and is hard to recognize in its early phases. The behavior of children and teens with schizophrenia may differ from that of adults with this illness.
    fact sheet index
Mounting evidence indicates that schizophrenia has neurodevelopmental roots. The appearance of schizophrenic symptoms before age 12 is rare (less than one-sixtieth as common as the adult-onset type), but studying these cases is important for an understanding of this disorder. Neurodevelopmental damage seems to be greater in childhood schizophrenia than in the adult-onset type. Most schizophrenic children show delays in language and other functions long before their psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, and disordered thinking) appear, usually at age seven or later. In the first years of life, about 30% of these children have transient symptoms of pervasive developmental disorder, such as rocking, posturing, and arm flapping. Childhood home movies indicate uneven motor development, such as unusual crawling, in adult-onset schizophrenic patients. Children with schizophrenia may be even more seriously impaired in this respect; they are also more anxious and disruptive than adult-onset schizophrenic patients were as children.

There's considerable disagreement about the diagnosis of schizophrenia. This booklet introduces the various different theories and ideas about causes and treatment. It also offers practical advice to anyone told they have this problem, and to their family and friends. What is schizophrenia? The term schizophrenia is widely used in the mental health system. Doctors may describe it as a psychosis. They mean that, in their view, a person can't distinguish their own intense thoughts, ideas, perceptions and imaginings from reality (the shared perceptions, sets of ideas and values that other people in that culture hold to be real). Among other symptoms, a person might be hearing voices, or may believe that other people can read their mind and control their thoughts. Many people prefer to look at schizophrenia 'holistically', and argue that these symptoms are logical or natural reactions to adverse life events. In other words, an extreme form of distress. They emphasise the need to think about individual experience, and the importance of understanding what the experiences mean to the individual. Hearing voices, for instance, holds a different significance within different cultures and spiritual belief systems.
