Personality disorders are chronic behavioral and relationship patterns that intefere with a person's life over many years. The cause of schizoid personality disorder is unknown and estimates of its incidence vary. This disorder may be associated with schizophrenia and shares many of the same risk factors. However, schizoid personality disorder is not as profoundly disabling as schizophrenia, since it is not marked by hallucinations, delusions, or the complete disconnection from reality that occurs in untreated (or treatment-resistant) schizophrenia.

Question: Some narcissists are not gregarious. They avoid social events and are stay-at-home recluses. Doesn't this behaviour go against the grain of narcissism? Answer: Click here to read the definition of the Schizoid Personality Disorder (SPD) in the DSM-IV-TR [2000]. Or, as the Howard H. Goldman (Ed.) in the "Review of General Psychiatry" [4th Edition. London, Prentice Hall International, 1995] puts it: "The person with Schizoid Personality Disorder sustains a fragile emotional equilibrium by avoiding intimate personal contact and thereby minimising conflict that is poorly tolerated."

NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) is often diagnosed with other mental health disorders (such as the Borderline, Histrionic, or Antisocial Personality Disorder). This is called "co-morbidity". It is also often accompanied by substance abuse and other reckless and impulsive behaviours and this is called "dual diagnosis". But there is one curious match, one logic-defying co-appearance of mental health disorders: narcissism and the Schizoid Personality Disorder. The basic dynamic of this particular brand of co-morbidity goes like this:
  • The narcissist feels superior, unique, entitled and better than his fellow men. He thus tends to despise them, to hold them in contempt and to regard them as lowly and subservient beings.

No one is merely a case of bipolar disorder , an obsessive-compulsive , or a paranoid schizophrenic . In my view, formal diagnostic categories hold some value in terms of contextual information, but they play a much less important role than the specific personal circumstances of a given client. If you are a client, you are first and foremost a specific, unique individual. Nonetheless, in my experience of working with clients who have received formal psychiatric diagnoses from other mental health professionals, I have often found that clients feel they lack adequate information about what these diagnostic labels actually mean. The entries in this section aim to provide the basic facts about each of several diagnostic labels. Successful Relationships Schizoid Personality Disorder This condition reveals a pattern of detachment from social relationships and a severe reduction in emotions, particularly in social settings. As with other disorders, conditions evidence themselves first in early adulthood. Any combination of the following may suggest the condition; Isolated socially Chooses solitary activities No interest in sex with other person Finds nothing pleasurables Lacks intimate friendships or relationships Displays no reaction to criticism or praise Appears cold, detached, unemotional and withdrawn
A supportive and non-invasive group can help a person who suffers from schizoid personality disorder overcome fears of closeness and feelings of isolation. Individual therapy has not been terribly effective and is generally directed at short-term solution to the immediate problem rather than long-term elimination.
Attempts are made to develop a reinforcement for social contacts and relationship in a non-threatening milieu. Cognitive restructuring may be useful in dealing with clearly illogical thoughts that are posing a risk to functioning and coping. The objective is to stabilize the situation and support the client. While it helpful to keep the individual in therapy, the individual may vacillate between showing a world of fantasy and close relationships and total fear of dependency.

    Hello,
Personality disorders are more or less permanent charachter traits and relatively less amenable to treatment. On the other hand, conditions such as depression are readily treatable. Therefore, I would suggest that you follow your doctor's advise and continue with the medications for depression.
If you are not satisfied, you could get a second opinion from a psychiatrist. Regards Neera Ghaziuddin MD
