Definition A disorder that includes features of both schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions, and deteriorating function) and a mood disorder (either bipolar disorder "manic depression" or major depressive disorder) in which the symptoms are so intertwined that a distinction between the two problems cannot be made.
Schizoaffective Disorder People with this condition often seek treatment for mood problems (mania, depression, symptoms of both simultaneously or rapidly alternating) which shifts towards symptoms of schizophrenia or may display symptoms of both conditions simultaneously, although the schizophrenic symptoms dominate. To be diagnosed with this disorder, someone must experience psychotic symptoms (hallucinations and delusions) for at least 2 weeks in the absence of mood disorder.

Harvard Mental Health Letter June, 2004 The long, clumsy name of schizoaffective disorder is an attempt to describe a malady that mixes two kinds of mental illness usually thought to be completely different. Schizophrenia and affective (mood) disorders, according to most views, not only have different symptoms but involve different brain functions, run in different families, and respond to different treatments. That makes the syndrome of schizoaffective disorder both a theoretical puzzle and a practical problem for psychiatry. By understanding it better, psychiatrists could throw light on the nature and causes of all major mental illnesses. Major mood disorders are generally divided between unipolar depression and ...

Schizoaffective disorder Schizoaffective disorder is a condition in which there are symptoms of mood (affect) disorders, like depression or mania, and symptoms of schizophrenia present at the same time, or within a few days of each other. Usually the diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder is given when the schizophrenic symptoms are more pronounced; if the mood disorder is more pronounced the condition is more often called depressive or manic psychosis. There are many different definitions of these conditions, and it can be difficult for the doctors to settle on a diagnosis. About one in every two hundred people (1/2%) develops schizoaffective disorder at some time during his or her life. Some people believe that this low level of diagnosis does not represent the true level of the condition, and that many people are given a misdiagnosis instead of a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. More recently, in another study, a quarter of all psychotic patients were eventually diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Schizoaffective disorder usually begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, often between the ages of sixteen and thirty. More women than men tend to suffer from schizoaffective disorder.

    Mental Health:
Schizoaffective Disorder Schizoaffective disorder is a serious mental illness that has features of two different conditions, schizophrenia and an affective (mood) disorder, either major depression or bipolar disorder Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that distorts the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality and relates to others. Depression is an illness that is marked by feelings of sadness, worthlessness or hopelessness, as well as problems concentrating and remembering details. Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling mood changes, including severe highs (mania) and lows (depression). Schizoaffective disorder is a life-long illness that can impact all areas of daily living, including work or school, social contacts and relationships. Most people with this illness have periodic episodes, called relapses, when their symptoms surface. While there is no cure for schizoaffective disorder, symptoms often can be controlled with proper treatment.

GENETICS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA AND AFFECTIVE DISORDER - AN OVERLAP
Shashjit Lal Varma , MBBS, MD, PhD, Consultant Psychiatrist, Grampians Psychiatric Services, Ballarat Base Hospital, PO Box - 577, Ballarat 3353, Victoria, Australia Introduction Numerous studies have established the familial aggregation of schizophrenia and that familial factors that predispose to schizophrenia also predispose to other schizophrenia related disorders. Kraepelin proposed that schizophrenia and manic-depressive psychosis were two distinct disorders but since then with abundance of literature on this subject pouring in, the theory is being challenged quite frequently. The number of studies which support the Kraepelinian view of psychosis exceed those which do not. The proponents of continuum theory propose a continuum from unipolar to bipolar disorder to schizoaffective psychosis and right up to schizophrenia. Another hypothesis proposed is that schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder are two distinct entities and that unipolar and schizoaffective disorders are expressed in the relatives of patients in both the categories (Gershon et al, 1988). Family Studies Rudin (1916) reported that although the risk for schizophrenia for an individual was high (6.2%) if they had a close relative with schizophrenia, it was higher if the ill relative had a non-schizophrenic (mostly affective) psychosis (8.2%) or alcoholism (7.8%). He also found almost equal numbers of relatives with affective disorder and relatives with schizophrenia in the families of his schizophrenic probands. On the other hand, among the psychotic relatives of Odegaard's (1972) manic depressive probands, 19% were diagnosed as schizophrenic, indicating that the co-occurrence may run in both directions.
