Scarlet Fever
Topic Overview
What is scarlet fever?
Scarlet fever is a term used for strep throat with a rash. Strep throat is a throat infection caused by a type of streptococcal bacteria.
What causes scarlet fever?
Scarlet fever is caused by streptococcal (strep) bacteria, the same bacteria that cause strep throat. There are many different strains of strep bacteria, some of which cause more serious illness than others. The type of strep that infects the throat and causes scarlet fever is called group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABS).
What are the symptoms of scarlet fever?
Symptoms that may occur before the rash include:
  • Sore throat and difficulty swallowing. White or yellow spots or coating on the throat and tonsils. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
Other symptoms, especially in children, may include general body aches, headache, stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, or listlessness. Scarlet fever usually doesn't occur with cold symptoms, such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, or cough. Red spots begin to appear on the roof of the mouth (palate) about 2 to 3 days after symptoms first appear. Bright red spots may appear on the tongue, giving it an appearance called "strawberry tongue."

Life Insurance.Net features hundreds of independent insurance agents, providing accurate term life quotes and universal life quotes from hundreds of top insurance carriers. Whole Life Insurance is permanent life insurance protection for your entire life, usually to age 100. A Whole Life policy is contractually guaranteed not to lapse, provided that you pay sufficient premiums each year to keep the policy in force. Besides permanent lifetime insurance protection, Whole Life Insurance features a savings element that allows you to build cash value on a tax-deferred basis. A portion of the premiums you pay build up the savings element of the policy and are invested by the company. The interest rate return on your investment is added to the savings portion of the policy. This is how the policy builds cash value. In addition to crediting your policy with interest, "participating" policies issued by mutual insurance companies may also give you the opportunity to earn dividends. Dividends are a NON-guaranteed return of part of the premium intended to reflect a company’s favorable operating experience.

Scarlet´s body come alive
Let her dance for you and catch your spell
You´ll swear you can believe her
Be careful not to catch the scarlet fever.
So I paid my fare and walked down front
And found an empty chair
As I settled in young scarlet took the ribbons from her hair
The moves her body made while the music played Were the likes I´ve never seen And she became the envy of my dreams. One by one her teasing movements Brought the crowd out of their seats And all at once young scarlet Danced straight up in front of me From the moment that her eyes found mine I´ve never been the same Scarlet locked another heart upon her chain. Now I get scarlet fever every time I see her But she´s a night club teaser Not paid to notice me Yes, I get scarlet fever If she knew how much I need her She´d place her hand in my hand And dance away with me.

The News-Sun "W hen my mother was a young lady, scarlet fever was around. I remember her telling about how she had neighbors with scarlet fever, and she would buy groceries for them. The neighbors had to bring their money outside, hang it on a clothesline and pour hot water over it," tells Mary Squier, a woman who worked at McCray Memorial Hospital for nearly 45 years. "This was before 1914."
From November 1978 to November 1993, Squier served as the director of medical records at McCray. She remembers hearing about early-century scares like typhoid fever, influenza and scarlet fever. The scare that lives in her memory most is polio. "With the polio vaccines, there was a shot, then a sugar cube that you took orally," Squier says. "Now you don't hear about it."

    What is scarlet fever?
Scarlet fever, also known as scarlatina, is an infectious disease that causes a rash. It is usually associated with an infection by streptococci, such as strep throat. It may also be associated with wounds or burns that become infected. The rash of scarlet fever is typically a fine, "sandpaper-like" rash that consists of small, red bumps. Scarlet fever most commonly occurs in children between the ages of 2 and 10. It is spread from direct contact with a child who is infected, usually through secretions from the mouth or nose.

    http://www.dohistory.org/diary/themes/epidemic/
During the summer of 1787 in Hallowell, Maine, Martha Ballard found herself busy with two of her major duties as a midwife: delivering babies and tending the sick. The entries from the diary for the months of June, July, August, and September show the evidence of Group A hemolytic streptococci attacking the populace as scarlet fever, puerperal fever, and infected wounds. Working before germ theory had explained the connection, Martha had no way of knowing that "strep," as we call it, was responsible for all three manifestations in her patients. The symptoms of scarlet fever were sore throat, rash, and possible death. Martha and her contemporaries called it canker rash. Puerpural fever occurred after childbirth and could kill both mother and child. No antibiotics were available to help with scarlet fever, puerpural fever, or infected wounds. People did not even know that cleanth and antiseptic conditions could stem the spread of the disease from patient to patient. Look in the following entries for evidence of an epidemic. A subplot in one entry involved Martha herself. On August 13 she noted the death of little Willy McMaster, whose mother was pregnant with another child. Martha wrote, "Poor mother, how Distressing her case..." Perhaps the case brought back the memory of the summer of 1769 when Martha lost three of her own young children to a diptheria epidemic in Oxford, Massachusetts. Like Mrs. McMaster, Martha birthed her daughter Hannah (on August 6, 1769) during an epidemic that took another child's life. Check the August 6, 1787 entry, when Martha noted Hannah's birthday.
