Scarlet fever
Definition
Scarlet fever is an infection that is caused by a bacteria called streptococcus. The disease is characterized by a sore throat fever , and a sandpaper-like rash on reddened skin. It is primarily a childhood disease. If scarlet fever is untreated, serious complications such as rheumatic fever (a heart disease) or kidney inflammation ( glomerulonephritis ) can develop. Description
Scarlet fever, also known as scarlatina, gets its name from the fact that the patient's skin, especially on the cheeks, is flushed. A sore throat and raised rash over much of the body are accompanied by fever and sluggishness (lethargy). The fever usually subsides within a few days and recovery is complete by two weeks. After the fever is gone, the skin on the face and body flakes; the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet peels more dramatically. This disease primarily affects children ages two to ten. It is highly contagious and is spread by sneezing, coughing, or direct contact. The incubation period is three to five days, with symptoms usually beginning on the second day of the disease, and lasting from four to ten days. Early in the 20th century, severe scarlet fever epidemics were common. Today, the disease is rare. Although this decline is due in part to the availability of

What causes scarlet fever?
Scarlet fever is caused by streptococcal (strep) bacteria, the same bacteria that cause strep throat. There are many different strains of strep bacteria, some of which cause more serious illness than others. The type of strep that infects the throat and causes scarlet fever is called group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABS).

It is caused by a poison (toxin) released by some types of strep bacteria. The most noticeable symptom of scarlet fever is a rough, red rash that feels like sandpaper. The rash begins on the chest and abdomen and spreads over the rest of the body within 24 hours. The rash and redness are more apparent in skin folds, especially in the groin, armpits, and elbow creases. Fever and a sore throat usually develop before the rash appears. Scarlet fever and the strep infection that causes it are treated with antibiotics. The rash itself is not contagious and does not need treatment. Most cases of scarlet fever can be cured without the development of permanent complications.

Scarlet Fever
Scarlet fever causes a sore throat, high temperature and a rash. It usually only occurs in children. It has become much less common and less serious than it once was. Full recovery is usual.
What causes scarlet fever? Scarlet fever is due to a throat infection caused by a bacterium (bug) called streptococcus. There are various strains (types) of streptococcus. They cause various infections, and one strain causes scarlet fever. What are the symptoms of scarlet fever?
  • Sore throat and fever (high temperature) are the typical first symptoms.
  • A bright red (scarlet) rash soon develops. This is caused by a toxin (poison) that is made by the streptococcal bacteria. The toxin gets into the blood from the infected throat. The rash starts as small red spots, usually on the neck and upper chest. It soon spreads to many other parts of the body. The face may become quite flushed. The rash blanches (goes white) if you press on it.
  • The tongue may become pale but coated with red spots ('strawberry tongue'). After a few days the whole tongue may look red.
  • Other common symptoms include: headaches, vomiting, being off food, and feeling generally unwell.

Definition: Scarlet fever is a disease caused by an infection of the throat with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal bacteria ( strep throat
Alternative Names: Scarlatina
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Scarlet fever was once a very serious childhood disease, but now is easily treatable. The incubation period is short, generally 1-2 days. Illness typically begins with a fever and sore throat. It may be accompanied by chills, vomiting, abdominal pain, and malaise. The streptococcal bacteria produces a toxin that causes a rash that appears one to two days after the onset of illness. The rash usually first appears on the neck and chest, then spreads over the body. It is described as "sandpapery" in quality. The texture of the rash is more important than the appearance in confirming the diagnosis. The rash can last for over a week. As the rash fades, peeling (desquamation) may occur around the finger tips, toes, and groin area. The main risk factors is infection with the bacteria that causes strep throat . A history of strep throat or scarlet fever in the community, neighborhood, or school may increase the risk of infection.

This page was reviewed or revised on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Scarlet fever is a form of the streptococcal disease characterized by a skin rash. The streptococci secrete a toxin which causes a skin rash to appear. Ordinarily scarlet fever evolves from the initial illness of strep throat, although the rash only occurs in 10% of the cases of strep throat. Scarlet fever can also be present in those who are suffering from other infections caused by the streptococcal bacteria, such as a streptococcal infection of the skin and soft tissue, surgical wounds, or the uterus.
