Who Am I?
My name is Brenda Harris. I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis April, 1989. I remember the first time I heard about this disease. I was in the Doctor's office complaining of a cough. My doctor took a x-ray and looked grim and told me she thought I had Sarcoidosis. My first thought was give me some medication and let's get rid of this! I was to find out it wouldn't be that easy. The cough became a daily part of my life. I felt I had to do something about this disease. So I started

ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview Sarcoidosis is a fairly common disease with an annual incidence rate of approximately 11 per 100,000 in Caucasians and approximately 36 per 100,000 African Americans in the United States. It is most common in young adults between the ages of 20 and 40. The word "sarcoidosis" comes from the Greek word "sarkodes," meaning "fleshy," and the Greek suffix "-osis," meaning "condition." The "fleshy condition" refers to the skin lesions that often form on various parts of the body. Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic disease that can affect a variety of organs. Pulmonary involvement occurs in greater than 90% of patients and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality from this disease. Many organs can be involved, in fact, one of the most noticeable symptoms is the peculiar skin lesions, erythema nodusum, that develop on the lower legs. Sarcoidosis is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by granuloma formation in a variety of organs. Granulomas are collections of immune cells and disease that result from granulomatous disorders. There are a variety of granulomatous disorders that closely resemble sarcoidosis, including tuberculosis. The close resemblence to tuberuculosis has led to speculation that sarcoidosis is due to an infectious organism. It is the formation of these granulomas and the resulting tissue damage caused by the cells within these granulomas that cause the symptoms of sarcoidosis.

ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Diagnosis Diagnosing sarcoidosis involves eliminating other similar lung disorders, such as tuberculosis or chronic beryllium disease. This is usually done by a thorough clinical and radiological evaluation. Sarcoidosis is confirmed when there is histological evidence of noncaseating granulomas and other causes have been excluded. A skin test called the Kveim-Siltzback test may be employed in atypical cases when biospy is not possible. The use of the Kveim-Siltzback test is exceptionally rare in the United States. Because most sarcoidosis cases involve the lungs and thoracic lymph nodes, the chest x-ray is one of the most helpful diagnostic tools. If sarcoidosis is suspected following chest x-ray, tissue samples are usually collected. Initial laboratory evaluation of a patient with suspected sarcoidosis includes: chest radiography, pulmonary function tests, electrocardiography, opthalmologic evaluation, and blood tests (including hepatic, renal, and calcium). Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are often performed to rule out rhythm disturbances caused by sarcoid involvement of the heart. Other disorders that mimic sarcoidosis According to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center , some cases thought to be sarciodosis may actually be an inflammatory response to metal, or another environmental illness. For example, chronic beryllium disease (also known as chronic berylliosis) presents with similar symptoms. Sometimes it is helpful to review a patient's occupational history to see if there are any metals or other environmental toxins that may be causing the same sort of granuloma development.

Sarcoidosis
Medical Author: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is sarcoidosis? Sarcoidosis is a disease that results from inflammation of tissues of the body. It can appear in almost any body organ, but most often starts in the lungs or lymph nodes. The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown. The disease can appear suddenly and disappear. Or it can develop gradually and go on to produce symptoms that come and go, sometimes for a lifetime. As sarcoidosis progresses, small lumps, or granulomas, appear in the affected tissues. In the majority of cases, these granulomas clear up, either with or without treatment. In the few cases where the granulomas do not heal and disappear, the tissues tend to remain inflamed and become scarred (fibrotic). Sarcoidosis was first identified over 100 years ago by two dermatologists working independently, Dr. Jonathan Hutchinson in England and Dr. Caesar Boeck in Norway. Sarcoidosis was originally called Hutchinson's disease or Boeck's disease. Dr. Boeck went on to fashion today's name for the disease from the Greek words "sark" and "oid," meaning flesh-like. The term describes the skin eruptions that are frequently caused by the illness.

http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Oasis/6981/
I have been diagnosed with a rare disease called: Sarcoidosis. It is thought to be an auto-immune system disorder. Others believe it is a virus like Lyme Disease. It causes nodules or granulomas to grow in any organ of the body. Heart, brain, lungs, lymph nodes, kidney, spleen, joints, skin, bone and nervesanyplace. The granulomas develop in the organ causing inflammation and pain. They leave behind permanent scarring. Too much scarring impairs that organ.
It has no known cause or cure. It can appear suddenly then disappear or go on to develop symptoms that wax and wane sometimes for a lifetime. For some, it is fatal. There is treatment with the hopes of going into remission.

S arcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that predominantly affects the lungs. The many forms and presentations of this disease and the lack of a single diagnostic test can make the diagnosis challenging. Physicians have limited guidance for the treatment of sarcoidosis because of a lack of high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This article reviews the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and current evidence on the treatment of pulmonary and extrapulmonary sarcoidosis. Up to one half of patients with sarcoidosis are diagnosed by incidental findings on a chest radiograph. Epidemiology Sarcoidosis affects men and women of all races and ages. The condition usually presents in adults younger than 40 years, most frequently between 20 and 29 years of age. It is slightly more predominant in women than in men, with an incidence of 6.3 and 5.9 cases per 100,000 person-years, respectively. The lifetime risk of sarcoidosis for U.S. whites is estimated at 0.85 percent compared with 2.4 percent in U.S. blacks. Sarcoidosis is most prevalent in Swedes, Danes, and U.S. blacks. Mortality from sarcoidosis, usually caused by respiratory failure, approaches 1 to 5 percent.

What is sarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis (say "sar-coy-doe-sis") is a disease that may affect any organ or system in the body. People with sarcoidosis may have no symptoms at all or they may have serious problems with many organs in their body. The cause of sarcoidosis isn't known. It is most common in adults between 20 and 40 years of age. Sarcoidosis is more common in women than in men. In the United States, it occurs more often in blacks than in whites. Sarcoidosis is not contagious. This means you can't catch sarcoidosis from another person who has the disease. Return to top
What are the symptoms of sarcoidosis?
The symptoms of sarcoidosis vary, depending on which part of the body is affected. Symptoms can involve several parts of the body, or only one. Although almost any area of the body can be affected, most people have few, if any, symptoms. Less than half of people who have sarcoidosis need any treatment. The most common symptoms involve the lungs, skin, eyes and liver.
