Patellofemoral syndrome, Chondromalacia Patellae
  • Runner's Knee or Chondromalacia Patellae is a softening of the cartilage in the posterior part of the patella. The posterior patella articulates (forms a joint) with the femur (thighbone).

Runner's Knee
(Chondromalacia Patella)
Runners Knee refers to pain primarily on the inside of the knee, or beneath the kneecap can also occur. It is more commonly seen in runners as opposed to walkers due to high level of activity, particularly mileage. The key element in this injury is due to overpronation resulting in poor tracking of the patella causing a repeated stress of the bone moving abnormally from side to side over the groove of the thigh bone (femur), gradually softening the cartilage under the kneecap. The result is the surface of the joint can become rough. Pain may be just a prelude to further destruction of the surface (traumatic arthritis). This injury can be confused with " Patella tendonitis " which is usually pain beneath the Chondromalacia Patella bone. In either case it is the "tracking" of either the bone or tendon which needs to be addressed.

Chondromalacia patellae
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Runner's knee Chondromalacia Patellae (also known as CMP Patello-Femoral Pain Syndrome , or Runner's Knee ) is a discomfort or dull pain in the knee or just under or around the knee. It is most common in young adults, soccer players, cyclists rowers , and runners . Either the knee cap has been damaged or put off-center by trauma, or the cartilage has been worn out on one side or completely. edit
Causes
CMP is caused by trauma or muscular imbalance in the upper leg through excessive force or training of a single muscle or joint, where certain muscles are putting more force on the joint than others. See also Iliotibial Band Syndrome edit
Treatments
  • Strengthening muscles with light cycling , swimming, or zero-impact low-intensity exercise. Strengthening thigh and inner quadriceps vastus medialis ) to balance the forces on the knee cap. Not overtraining When lying, don't allow bodyweight to put pressure or shift the knee cap. Using a pillow to keep legs slightly bent and knee-caps in place.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. You'll often hear this injury referred to as chondromalacia patella. Pain develops when your kneecap doesn't track properly in the groove at the end of your thigh bone (femur) or when there is a muscle imbalance. As a result, the cartilage underneath your patella (kneecap) becomes inflamed, eventually softens, and can then deteriorate and progress to arthritis. This is a very common injury that accounts for many of the overuse injuries treated in sports clinics. Signs and Symptoms If you have runner's knee, you'll usually feel pain in the front of the knee and hear cracking and popping noises beneath or on both sides of the kneecap. Symptoms are most prominent when you kneel down, go down stairs, do squats, or do activities that put force against your knee. Stiffness may occur simply from prolonged sitting (sometimes called "moviegoer's knee"). Pain usually increases gradually over a period of time, often a year or longer, until it becomes severe enough that you need to seek medical attention.

Pinpointing biomechanical faults can keep athletes on their feet. By Marlene A. Prost When an athlete experiences knee pain from a torn cartilage or ligament, the diagnosis is clear. But often, pain in the knee area is related to a biomechanical abnormality located anywhere from the foot to the hip. Conditions such as knock knees, bow legs or flat feet, which many people live with daily, can erupt painfully in an athlete's knee as the rigors and repetitive motion increase in sports training. Athletes are doing many more things with much more effort [than normal daily activities]," says Tab Blackburn, MEd, PT, ATC, director of sports rehabilitation at The Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in New Orleans. "You or I may have pes planus (flat foot), but we're not training day in and day out."

The most common cause of chronic knee pain is the chondromalacia patella. Also informally called "housemaid's knee" or "secretary's knee" and medically termed chondromalacia patella, this condition is named the chondromalacia patella because the pain is related to how the kneecap (the patella) slides over the lower end of the thigh bone (the femur). What are the symptoms of chondromalacia patella? The symptoms of chondromalacia patella are generally a vague discomfort of the inner knee area, aggravated by activity (running, jumping, climbing or descending stairs) or by prolonged sitting with knees in a moderately bent position (the so called "theater sign" of pain upon arising from a desk or theater seat). Some patients may also have a vague sense of "tightness" or "fullness" in the knee area. Occasionally, if chronic symptoms are ignored, the associated loss of quadriceps (thigh) muscle strength may cause the leg to "give out." Besides an obvious reduction in quadriceps muscle mass, mild swelling of the knee area may occur. What causes chondromalacia patella?

GENERAL INFORMATION
DEFINITIONAching pain behind the kneecap. Pain begins and progresses slowly. It appears in healthy, athletically active young people between 12 and 35 years old, and is twice as common in women as in men. This is the most common knee problem for runners.
  • Soreness and aching pain around or under the kneecap, especially on the inner side. Symptoms worsen after walking or running up ramps or hills, squatting, or jumping up and running.
  • "Giving way" at the knee (sometimes).
  • "Water on the knee" (sometimes).
  • Muscle imbalance or compression at the knee that pulls the kneecap sideways out of normal alignment.
  • Direct blow to the kneecap.
  • Injury resulting from extreme flexing of the knee, as in squatting and kneeling.
  • Congenital abnormal development in the knee.
  • Overstress of the knee as can occur in any running sport, such as jogging, sprinting, football, basketball or soccer.
    HOW TO PREVENT
  • Strengthen and condition upper leg and hip muscles for maximum strength, flexibility and endurance before you start competition or vigorous physical activity.

    2. Why do racing shoes have spikes on the bottom? a) To help the runner finish the race quickly b) To slow the runner down c) To keep the runner from getting injured d) All of the above
Answer is D: Runners use the spikes on the bottom of their shows to slow them down so they can speed up! Racing tracks can be slippery. If a runner slips, time is lost and the runner can even get injured. The spikes create just enough friction between the shoe and the track to stop the runner from slipping. With sure footing, runners are free to speed away.

Stringing obesity, diabetes and the 75th anniversary of the discovery of insulin together in the South Pacific; and potential benefits for nicotine and the brain. Tomorrow Americans will go the polls. Throughout this election, many issues have been raised, including campaign finance reform. President Clinton has promised that if he's returned to the White House, he'll push for changes to campaign financing. That would mean companies like Phillip Morris, the largest tobacco company in the world, and a major contributor to the Republican Party, would have their political donations sharply reduced. And though this tobacco giant has made news with its involvement in the political scene, last week they surfaced again for funding a new study linking nicotine and Alzheimer's disease positively. And as Janet Silver reports from Washington, this was one of two projects which suggested that nicotine may prove to be the basis for a new Alzheimer's disease drugs. Janet Silver : There may be some scientific proof to the smokers' claim that lighting up helps them to concentrate. A study released last week credits nicotine with increasing the transmission of nerve impulses to an area of the brain involving learning and memory. For years, researchers have studied the structure and function of nicotinic receptors in the brain, but they could not explain what these receptors were doing. To answer those questions, scientists used neurone tissue culture from rat brains.

Runner's knee is medically referred to as patellofemoral syndrome. This condition occurs when the patella does not glide correctly on the thigh bone, or the femur. In runner's knee, pain occurs as a result of this abnormal "tracking" of the patella bone. Click on the links below to discover the causes, symptoms, and treatment of runner's knee.
