Rosacea
Rosacea, previously called acne rosacea , is a chronic skin disease that affects both the skin and the eyes. The disorder is characterized by redness, bumps, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin on the nose. Rosacea usually occurs on the face, although the neck and upper chest are also sometimes involved. A mild degree of eye (ocular) involvement occurs in more than 50 percent of people with rosacea. Approximately 13 million people in the United States have rosacea. It usually occurs in adults between the ages of 30 and 60. Women are more often affected by mild to moderate rosacea than men, but the disorder is often more severe when it strikes men. Although rosacea can develop in people of any skin color, it tends to occur most frequently in people with fair skin. A tendency to develop rosacea may be inherited; often, several people in a family have it.

Lotions Can't Prevent Rosacea
Q:
My dermatologist once told me, "I can pick out women who are 25 years old and know that in later years they will have rosacea." At the time, she didn't mention that she thought I would get rosacea, but now, in fact, she has given me the diagnosis. Could I have used creams earlier to prevent the condition or to keep it from getting worse? Should she have even told me she can tell in advance who is likely to get rosacea? A: Rosacea is a relatively common skin condition of unknown cause. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases ( NIAMS ), approximately 14 million people in the US have rosacea. It most often affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60 and is more common in women (particularly during menopause) than men. The disorder is characterized by redness, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin. Rosacea usually affects the face; other parts of the upper body are only rarely involved.

Ocular Rosacea
Overview Ocular rosacea is associated with a chronic skin condition known as acne rosacea. The problem usually affects those with light skin, and is characterized by redness and bumps concentrated on the forehead, nose and cheeks. One of the earliest symptoms of rosacea (often experienced during puberty) is facial flushing brought on by changes in body temperature, emotion, or hot drinks. Eventually, the skin may become chronically red, irritated and inflamed. Approximately 60% of patients with rosacea develop related problems affecting the eye (ocular rosacea). Patients with ocular rosacea most commonly experience irritation of the lids and eye, occurring when the oil-producing glands of the lids become obstructed. Styes, blepharitis, episcleritis, and chronically red eyes are also typical conditions. Ocular rosacea may also affect the cornea, causing neovascularization (abnormal blood vessel growth), infections, and occasionally ulcers.

Rosacea
Rosacea is a skin condition that is due to inflammation of parts of the face. Symptoms include facial flushing, facial redness, spots, eye problems and thickening of the skin. Not all symptoms occur in all cases. Rosacea affects about 1 in 10 people in the UK, usually in middle or later life. Spots can usually be cleared with antibiotic treatment. Other treatments may be used for other symptoms, but facial redness is difficult to treat.
What is rosacea and what are the symptoms? Rosacea is a skin condition that is due to inflammation of parts of the face. It is sometimes called 'acne rosacea' as it can look similar to acne. However, it is a different condition to acne. Symptoms of rosacea include one or more of the following.
  • Frequent flushing of the face.
  • Persistent redness (erythema) of the face.
  • Lumpy red spots (papules) and small cysts (pustules) on the face. The spots and cysts look similar to acne. These may 'come and go' in some cases, but remain long-term unless treated in some cases.
  • Eye symptoms occur in more than half of cases, although they are often mild. They can include: a 'feeling' of something in the eye, burning or stinging, dryness, itching, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, eyelid cysts and styes, and eyelid inflammation (blepharitis). Inflammation of the cornea (the front of the eye) is an uncommon but serious complication that can affect your vision. Therefore, have you eyes examined by a doctor if eye symptoms develop. In particular, see a doctor urgently if you develop eye pain or visual problems.
