          What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a common skin condition that usually only affects the face and eyes. Characterized by redness, pimples, and broken blood vessels, rosacea tends to begin after middle age (between the ages of 30 and 60) and is more common in fair-skinned people. The cause of rosacea is unknown. An estimated 14 million people in the US have rosacea.

We treat the redness and broken veins of Rosacea with Intense Pulse Light using the Lumenis Quantum SR machine. This delivers a pulse of red light to the broken vessels causing them to heal up and fade away. People with Rosacea flush easily and develop redness, pimples, and thread veins on their cheeks nose and forehead. It often starts in the second or third decade of life, and women are more often affected than men. It is common, affecting perhaps 10% of adults. Because rosacea affects the face it can cause significant psychological problems. The unpredictable flushes can be mistaken for too much drinking. Many people with Rosacea find the rash on their face causes them embarrassment and anxiety.
IPL machine Some people stay well by avoiding triggers of flushing such as certain foods and beverages, sunlight and certain cosmetics. The active flare ups when spots break out are best treated with antibiotic lotions to rub on or as tablets to swallow. The better active flare ups are controlled the fewer thread veins are left behind. Lasers and IPL machines are used to help the remaining redness and broken veins.

Incidence The most likely diagnosis of a chronically red face is rosacea. Erythema occurs in a "cruciate" distribution affecting the cheeks, forehead, nose, chin and occasionally the balding male scalp. It is usually bilaterally symmetrical and most common in females of Celtic origin. There are two peaks in age of onset - 20's to 30's and the 40's to 50's. Rosacea starts with episodic flushing which gradually gives way to a fixed erythema. Persistent telangiectasia develops in the affected area and acute inflammatory episodes may occur with the formation of non tender papules and pustules. The role of the Demadex follicularum mite in the pathogenesis of rosacea is still unclear but a local delayed hypersensitivity response to Demadex antigens may be partly responsible for the inflammatory component.
    Precipitants
Precipitating stimuli for rosacea include heat, UV light, spicy foods, stress, exercise, alcohol and hot tea or coffee.

Rosacea usually affects the face; other parts of the upper body are only rarely involved. Who Gets Rosacea? Approximately 14 million people in the United States have rosacea. It most often affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60. Rosacea is more common in women (particularly during menopause) than men. Although rosacea can develop in people of any skin color, it tends to occur most frequently and is most apparent in people with fair skin. What Does Rosacea Look Like?
