Ringworm
What is Ringworm
Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that can affect the nails, feet, scalp, body, and in particular, the groin area. The fungus that causes ringworm can be found in humans, animals, and soil, depending on the type of ringworm your child has. Characteristic of ringworm is a red ring on the patient's skin.
What are the Symptoms of Ringworm
Ringworm on the scalp begins with a pimple that becomes abnormally large and leaves scaly patches that cause temporary baldness. Hairs infected with ringworm becomes brittle and break off easily and crusty, yellow areas may develop. Ringworm of the body shows up anywhere on the body except for the scalp and feet as a round, flat patch. The most common form of ringworm, which is ringworm of the groin, appears as a rash that expands and then the center will clear, forming a ring. There may also be many rings that overlap and become itchy. Ringworm of the foot, most commonly known as athlete's foot appears as scaly or cracking skin between the toes. Ringworm of the nails causing the nails to become discolored and brittle, thick, chalky and even sometimes disintegrate. Symptoms of scalp ringworm appear after 10-14 days of initial contact. Ringworm of the skin takes about 4-10 days to appear. All of the other forms of ringworm do not have a known time for how long it takes symptoms to appear after initial contact.

What is it?
Despite the name ringworm has nothing to do with worms. The proper medical name for these infections is Tinea, and this is often followed by the Latin name for the affected part of the body. For example, Tinea pedis affects the feet (also called athlete's foot), Tinea corporis affects the body and Tinea capitis affects the scalp.
What causes it?
Ringworm or Tinea is caused by infection with a fungi, mostly by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. Spores of the fungus may be picked up from another person, the soil or environment, from an animal (for example, cats or dogs) or from household objects.
Who's affected?
Anyone may develop a ringworm infection. However it's more likely when there's some local breakdown of the immune defences, such as a scratch in the skin, which allows the fungal spores to invade and start an infection. In athlete's foot for example, sweaty conditions between the toes make the skin too moist to work properly as a barrier to micro-organisms, leading to infection.
What are the symptoms?

Ringworm
I've got a strange rash on my leg, which my doctor's told me is ringworm, and which I'm treating with a cream. What is a ringworm, and how did I catch it? Peter
Dr Trisha Macnair responds
The name is misleading. Ringworm isn't a worm but actually a fungal infection caused by a group of fungi called the dermatophytes. It's called ringworm because the rash is ring-shaped, with red or silvery itchy scales that tend to clear in the centre as the ring expands. The edge of the ring may be slightly raised. Fungal infections like these can affect any part of the body although ring shapes are not always seen. Ringworm of the body is known as tinea corporis, while ringworm of the genital areas is called tinea cruris (or sometimes 'jock itch'). This condition is more common in men, and produces a red intensely itchy patch that spreads outwards over the inside of the thigh. Ringworm of the scalp is known as tinea capitis. It mainly affects children and may cause circular patches of hair loss. But perhaps the best-known type of ringworm or tinea is athlete's foot, which causes redness and cracks between the toes (infection in toes).

Although the name suggests a parasitic type of worm as the culprit, it is actually caused by two common, and harmless, fungi called Trichophyton and Microsporum. Where did my child catch it from?
The fungi in the rash are contagious by direct contact with the rash or from the hands of an infected person who has been scratching the rash. Your child can also catch it from infected pets, especially dogs and cats. What does ringworm look like?
The lesions are round and slightly red, with a border of small scales, blisters, or bumps. The lesions are well demarcated, which means there is a very sharp border between the infected and normal skin. The center is often clear, almost normal appearing, skin. The lesions vary in size from dime-sized up to several inches across. It is usually found on the face, trunk or limbs. Several close lesions can merge together, forming a multi-lobed appearance. Ringworm, actually a fungal infection of the skin , is one of the few infections or diseases that can affect cats and their human families. Ringworm is most commonly identified with hair loss, but additional symptoms may include scaling or crusty sores on the skin, of varying degrees, and itchiness.
Why is it called "ringworm"? The fungi in the disease cause inflammation of the skin in response, and since the ringworm fungi cannot survive in an environment of inflammation, the infection moves outward, in a ring-like pattern. In the center of the ring is the skin tissue that is trying to heal.
Why is ringworm so very contagious? The most common method of infection is from contact with infected hair. Because hairs, which are covered with spores, tend to remain in our environments, they remain as a key source for re-infecting animals and people. Some cats are known as carriers; that is, they do not themselves have symptoms of the disease, yet they are actually spreading the disease to others around them.

Ringworm
Ringworm is a fungus infection of the scalp or skin. Ringworm on the scalp may leave a flaky patch of baldness. In the skin ringworm causes a reddish, ring like rash that may itch or burn. The area may be dry and scaly or it may be moist or crusted. The same fungi that infect humans can also infect animals such as dogs and cats and infections may be acquired from pets as well as from infected children .
Ringworm is spread by direct contact with a person or animal infected with the fungus. It can also be spread indirectly through contact with articles (such as combs or clothing) or surfaces which have been contaminated with the fungus. The fungus is no longer present when the lesion starts to shrink.
Root causes:
Ringworm infection occurs in the scalp, the body, the feet, and the nails. Ringworm of the scalp is common among children because of the lack of protective fatty acids in their scalp. The disease spread on the skin and extends deeper into the hair roots, and also up along the hair. The affected hair becomes dull and breaks off near its root. This leaves bald spots on the scalp .the patches of ringworm on the body are usually round or oval, with raised pink and scaly rings which show a clean space in the center. The itching in the infected parts of the body .if it is not treated for a longtime, the infection becomes chronic and is then difficult to get rid of.

How to Get Rid of Ringworm
Ringworm is a common fungal infection that is highly contagious and can spread quickly. If your child gets it, alert his friends' parents to prevent an epidemic. Treatment can take weeks. Steps: Part back a section of hair so you can see the scalp. Look for one or several round patches of redness with spots around the edges, red rings or scaling skin. Take your child to the family doctor or pediatrician if you spot any of these symptoms. The doctor may prescribe medication to be taken for up to four weeks. Apply over-the-counter cream to your child's scalp for small patches of ringworm. Shampoo your child's hair two to three times a week. In some cases Selsun Blue works well, but it can be very irritating to children and people with tender skin. Try using the over-the-counter creams with your usual shampoo. Let school or day care officials know your child has ringworm.

Ringworm can infect the groin ("jock itch"), the feet (athlete's foot) and the scalp. It is easier to prevent the spread of ringworm than it is to treat it. Good hygiene may help keep ringworm from infecting you or your family. Steps: Avoid contact with people or animals that have ringworm. Signs of infection include flakes of skin on the fur, excessive itching, patchiness and hair loss. Teach children not to share combs, hairbrushes, ribbons and barrettes, or hats. Wear shoes in public areas, and wear thongs in public showers and swimming areas. Check your child's scalp for redness or patchiness, and wash your hands afterwards. If you suspect she has ringworm, let her teachers and her friends' parents know. Teach your child not to pick at her scalp, and to wash her hands after handling pets, especially unknown ones.

Encyclopedia Article Ringworm , infection of the skin hair , or nails caused by various kinds of fungi that belong to the genera Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum. Ringworm tends to infect moist areas of the body, such as the groin, between the toes, and under the arms. The affected area usually becomes inflamed and itchy because of sensitivity to the fungus or a secondary infection by bacteria . In the most serious cases, ringworm results in an acute infection that produces running sores on the scalp or painful blisters on the feet. Petting infected dogs and cats often spreads ringworm to human beings, but it is usually passed through human-to-human contact. Even sharing clothes, combs, or towels may result in the spread of the infection.

Water-related Diseases Ringworm (Tinea) Ringworm or Tinea is a typically mild disease of the skin, scalp or nails caused by a fungus. Personal hygiene, supported by availability of adequate quantities of water are important preventive measures. The disease and how it affects people Ringworm is a contagious skin disease, in which the scalp (tinea capitis), nails (tinea unguium), feet (tinea pedis or “athlete's foot”), or body (tinea corporis) can be affected. Despite its name, ringworm is caused by a fungus. On the scalp, ringworm begins in the form of a pimple or sore, which then spreads into a ring shape. Hair becomes brittle, breaking easily and falling out, leaving bald spots on the scalp. On the body, ringworm may first appear as red or pink, flat or slightly raised, patches on the skin. The circular sores may be dry or scaly crusted or moist. As the sores become larger, the central area clears, leaving a ring of infected tissue around the clear area. Infection in the nails usually begins at the site of an injured nail and may spread to the other nails. Infected nails become thick, pitted, grooved and abnormal in shape and colour. Ringworm of the feet and body are more frequent in men than women. Adults are more likely than children to get ringworm of the feet, which occurs more frequently in hot weather.
