  • Doctors always recommend aspirin for infants, children and teenagers. In children aspirin should be used under medical supervision or special conditions only. If your child has any illness, chicken pox or the flu, you should give them aspirin for their fever, aches and pains without checking with a doctor. With a few rare exceptions, acetaminophen or ibuprofen are safer for children than aspirin. For headaches in children use acetaminophen, not aspirin. It is easy to tell the difference between "flu" symptoms and "cold" symptoms.
  • Answers
  • (T) Aspirin should only be used in children under special conditions like rheumatoid arthritis with proper medical supervision. (F) If your child has any illness, especially the chicken pox or flu, you should check with your doctor before give them aspirin for their fever, aches and pain. In most cases there will be safer alternatives such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for their symptom relief.

Reye's syndrome can occur in individuals of any age following a viral illness. However, it is most common in children between the ages of 4 and 12. Studies have linked the syndrome to the use of aspirin by children who had chickenpox or other viral illnesses. Now children under the age of 19 are rarely given aspirin , and there are few cases reported each year. It is not known how aspirin and certain viral infections change the way the body functions. It is known that damage occurs to the mitochondria, the tiny organs in each cell that control cell energy and breathing. Children under the age of 19 should not be given medicines containing aspirin or other salicylates, unless prescribed by the healthcare provider. Parents should read medicine labels carefully and avoid those that list salicylates or salicylic acid. Adolescents should also be taught to read labels. Salicylates are commonly found in the following types of medicines:

Reye's Syndrome is a disease which affect all organs of the body, but most lethally the liver and the brain. It is a two phase illness because it is almost always associated with a previous viral infection such as influenza, cold, or chickenpox. Scientists know this disease is non-contagious, but the reason it is not contagious is unknown. Reye's Syndrome is often misdiagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, drug overdose, poisoning, or psychiatric illness. It is usually reported the most in January, February, and March. An epidemic of flu or chickenpox is commonly followed by an increase in cases. Reye's Syndrome develop after a person is beginning to recover from a viral illness. Accumulations of fat begin to develop in the liver and other organs of the body, along with a severe increase of pressure in the brain. Unless diagnosed successfully, death is suspected in a few days.

What Is Happening In My Child’s Body?
The liver and other organs are affected by abnormal accumulations of fat and the brain swells. This may result in possible brain injury with long term effects on your child’s health and development. If the illness is not recognized and treated in time, serious complications or even death may occur.
What Symptoms Should You Look For In Your Child?
Your child may experience forceful vomiting that lasts for hours and becomes worse with time. He or she may complain of a severe headache. Your child’s behavior may change and he may seem to be in a stupor, with a staring appearance. His breathing may become rapid and he may hyperventilate. Drowsiness may occur as well as memory loss, disorientation and hallucinations. Fever is usually not present. In infants the symptoms of Reye's syndrome may not follow a typical pattern; for example vomiting is less common.
Your child may not have all of these symptoms, however the existence of even one of these is an indication for urgent medical intervention. If your child shows this pattern of symptoms a few days after the onset of viral illness such as 'flu' or chicken-pox he needs to be seen by a medical professional immediately.

National Reye's Syndrome Foundation Reye's Syndrome, a deadly disease, strikes swiftly and can attack any child or adult without warning. All body organs are affected, with the liver and brain suffering most seriously. While the cause and cure remain unknown, research has established a link between Reye's Syndrome and the use of aspirin and other salicylate-containing medications. In 1974, the National Reye's Syndrome Foundation was incorporated, becoming the first citizen group to generate a concerted, organized lay movement to eradicate Reye's Syndrome. The Foundation's top objectives are:
    • AWARENESS to aid in early detection and educate the public and medical communities about the risk involved with using aspirin and other salicylates.
SERVICE to provide emotional support and guidance to families experiencing the trauma of Reye's Syndrome.
RESEARCH to support investigation into the disease's cause, management, treatment and prevention, as well as study its impact on survivors.

Is there treatment for Reye's Syndrome?
What is Reye's Syndrome? Reye's syndrome is a rare, potentially fatal childhood disease. It usually strikes children under the age of 15 who are recovering from an upper respiratory illness, chicken pox, or influenza. What is the cause of Reye's Syndrome? The cause of Reye's syndrome is unknown, but studies have found a link with the use of aspirin during a viral illness. For this reason, aspirin should not be given without a doctor's approval to any child under the age of 16. Reye's syndrome is characterized by a severe increase of pressure in the brain and abnormal accumulations of fat in the liver. It develops as the child recovers from an infection, typically the first symptom is uncontrollable vomiting and nausea. Other early symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, disorientation and irritability. The swelling in the brain may cause seizures, coma and the child may stop breathing. A child with Reye's syndrome needs immediate medical care. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the chance for a successful recovery. Is there a treatment for Reye's Syndrome?

Organizations What is Reye's Syndrome? Is there any treatment? There is no cure for RS. Successful management, which depends on early diagnosis, is primarily aimed at protecting the brain against irreversible damage by reducing brain swelling, reversing the metabolic injury, preventing complications in the lungs, and anticipating cardiac arrest. It has been learned that several inborn errors of metabolism mimic RS in that the first manifestation of these errors may be an encephalopathy with liver dysfunction. These disorders must be considered in all suspected cases of RS. Some evidence suggests that treatment in the end stages of RS with hypertonic IV glucose solutions may prevent progression of the syndrome.

    n. An acute encephalopathy characterized by fever, vomiting, fatty infiltration of the liver, disorientation, and coma, occurring mainly in children and usually following a viral infection, such as chicken pox or influenza. [After Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye (1912–1978), Australian pediatrician.]
    Diagnosis
Reye Syndrome What is Reye syndrome? Reye syndrome (RS) is an unusual reaction to infection (generally by a virus) that results in brain swelling and fatty disease of the liver and kidneys and can result in death. RS is most harmful to the brain and the liver, because it causes an increase of pressure within the brain and, often, massive accumulation of fat in the liver and other organs. RS is primarily a children's disease, although it can occur at any age. It is usually a two-phase illness because it tends to occur during recovery from a viral infection, such as the flu or chicken pox. The disorder can also develop 3 to 5 days after the onset of the viral illness. Reye's syndrome (RS) is often misdiagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, drug overdose, poisoning, sudden infant death syndrome, or psychiatric illness.

The second phase starts when symptoms of Reye's syndrome occur during recovery from the viral illness. Symptoms can also start 3 to 5 days after the viral illness begins.
A staging system for this disorder has been developed. Stages 1 to 3 represent mild to moderate illness. There is swelling in the brain and involvement of other body systems. Stages 4 and 5 represent severe illness, with
